Chapter 36 - The Silent Horizen

The fog of the Sunless Marshes receded behind them, but the oppressive tension of their journey lingered. Team Eclipse moved steadily toward their next destination, the Abyssal Core Fragment still pulsing faintly in Ryu's grip. The fragmented sky above the world seemed darker than before, as if the Abyss itself was watching their every step.

"Where are we headed now?" Draven asked, his voice breaking the heavy silence.

Aris tapped her map and pointed to the marked location glowing faintly. "The Plains of Silence. If the energy readings are correct, that's where the third signature is located."

"Plains of Silence?" Draven scoffed. "Sounds peaceful. I'm guessing it's not?"

"Not likely," Aris said, shaking her head. "According to the map description, it's an expanse of dead land—no wildlife, no sounds, and no light except for the sky above. The perfect place for an Abyssal entity."

Ryu said nothing, his mind racing with thoughts about their last battle. The Abyssal Wraith's incorporeal form and powerful attacks had pushed them to their limits. If the difficulty escalated with each signature, the next fight might demand even more from them.

True to its name, the Plains of Silence stretched before them like an endless sea of ash and blackened soil. The land was devoid of any movement or sound; even their footsteps seemed muffled.

"This place gives me the creeps," Draven muttered, gripping his shield tightly.

Aris scanned the space, her sharp eyes scanning the horizon. "Not a single enemy in view, but do not back down. Such silence in this place can only mean some evil is waiting for us."

The Abyssal Orb in Ryu's inventory throbbed again, casting an increasingly bright glow with every step. He felt his chest grow warm with discomfort and pulled it out from his inventory.

"It's reacting," Ryu said.

"That means we're close," Aris replied, readying her bow.

As they moved forward, a faint shimmer appeared in the distance. It looked like a rift in reality itself, a jagged tear in the air surrounded by swirling dark energy.

"That's got to be it," Draven said. "Let's hope it's not another ghost."

The group approached cautiously, their weapons drawn. The Abyssal Orb's light pulsed faster, almost as if in anticipation.

When they reached the rift, a deafening silence pressed down on them. The air felt heavy, suffocating, and the ground trembled beneath their feet.

Suddenly, the rift expanded, and a towering figure stepped through.

[Boss Encounter: Abyssal Guardian]

[Level: 45]

The Abyssal Guardian was a vast, almost human creature fashioned from stone and shadow. Its gleaming Abyssal veins pulsed with dark power, and in its eyes there was an evil, unrelenting light burning. In its left hand was a crackling black-lightning- edged blade to match its other hand in size.

Draven groaned. "Of course it's a giant with a sword."

The Abyssal Guardian swung its blade in a great arc, wasting no time. The ground split where the blade struck, and the group had to scatter.

"Keep your distance!" Aris yelled, launching an arrow at the Guardian's glowing chest. The arrow struck, but the creature barely flinched.

Ryu shot forward, Voidfang at the ready, targeting the creature's legs. His blade sank deep, but the Guardian was swift in retaliation, stomping its massive foot down and causing shockwaves that rippled through the earth.

Draven threw up his shield, catching most of the shockwave, then charged at the Guardian with a swing of his mace to its knee. The blow sent the creature stumbling back, but it was quick to regain its footing, swinging its blade once more.

This thing's tougher than the last one!" Draven yelled out while barely avoiding an incoming swipe.

"We have to zero in on its weak points!" Ryu hollered, pointing out a seam in the chest of and a few of its arms that glowed weak.

Aris nodded with intent eyes focused on said fractures. "I can drive it around. Give us time to figure some weakness."

She launched several rounds, each striking at said vulnerable points. The Guardian screeched and, becoming enraged, it headed after her.

Ryu took his chance and activated Voidfang, vanishing into the shadows. He reemerged behind the Guardian, thrusting his blade into the crack on its back that glowed.

The creature let out a wail of agony as dark energy flowed out of the wound.

"It's working!" Aris yelled.

Draven came at the creature again, his mace aglow with a skill enhancement. "Let's finish this thing off!"

The team continued to apply their pressure, searching for each weak spot. Aris's arrows and Draven's heavy blows, paired with Ryu's pinpoint accuracy, slowly began to weaken the Guardian.

Not yet. The Guardian readied its blade, letting out an intense glow of Abyssal energy. It brought the sword up over its head, ready to plunge down.

The Guardian brought the blade down with a devastating force, sending a massive shockwave of dark energy across the plains. The ground shattered, and the team was thrown back, their health bars dropping significantly.

"We're not done yet!" Aris shouted, struggling to her feet. She loosed another arrow, aiming directly for the crack in the creature's chest.

The arrow struck true, and the Guardian staggered, its movements growing sluggish.

Ryu seized the moment, unleashing his most potent skill. Voidfang churned with dark energy as he leaped towards the Guardian, the blade plunging into its chest.

The Abyssal Guardian roared one final, earth-shaking roar before falling over, its body dissolving into a pool of dark energy.

[Loot Acquired: Abyssal Core Fragment]

Another message arrived:

[Quest Update: 3/5 Abyssal Energy Signatures Neutralized.]

Draven sat down heavily, his armor covered in dust and sweat. "Three down. I'm starting to see a pattern here—giant monsters, glowing weak spots, and near-death experiences."

Aris smiled faintly. "You're catching on."

Ryu held the third Abyssal Core Fragment in his hand, its energy pulsating faintly. The weight of their mission pressed on him more heavily than ever.

"We've got two more to go," he said, his voice steady but grim.

Aris looked down at the map, frowning. "The next signature is in the Iron Spires. It's not far, but it's going to be hazardous."

Draven groaned. "Hazardous? I thought that was the entire theme of this trip."

Ryu didn't respond, his eyes fixed on the distant Sky Citadel. Answers they sought—and the battle that would decide their fates—awaited there.

No further word was needed; Team Eclipse steeled themselves and prepared to face whatever was in store for them. The Abyss would not relent, neither would they.
