Chapter 37 - Shadows Of The Iron Spires

The Iron Spires rose against the horizon, jagged and foreboding, like the rusted teeth of some long-dead titan. The path leading towards it was a barren expanse of cracked ground, strewn with shards of iron and the occasional twisted remains of what might once have been machinery. Each step Team Eclipse took echoed ominously, as if the land itself was warning them to turn back.

"The air's heavier here," Draven muttered, adjusting the straps on his armor. "Feels like we're walking into a forge."

"It's not just the air," Aris replied, her voice low. "This area radiates Abyssal energy. Be on your guard."

Ryu said nothing, his pointed eyes scanning their surroundings. He could feel the Orb in his inventory vibrating softly, the resonance growing with each passing moment. It felt as if the Orb itself was hungry to reunite with whatever lay ahead—and the hunger sent his teeth scraping against one another.

As they approached the spires, the earth began to shift beneath their feet. Lifeless terrain turned into a treacherous pathway of uneven metal plates and exposed wires. Faint sparks occasionally danced across the surfaces, threatening to jolt anyone who stepped too carelessly.

"This feels like a trap," Draven said, stepping gingerly to avoid a sparking wire.

"It is," Ryu said bluntly, his voice edged with certainty. "The Abyss doesn't let us advance without a price."

Sure enough, as if summoned by his words, the air around them shimmered, and a chorus of mechanical groans erupted from the ground. From the jagged edges of the spires, metallic creatures began to emerge—humanoid constructs with glowing red eyes and Abyssal veins coursing through their steel bodies.

"They're not wasting time," Aris muttered, readying her bow.

Draven hefted his shield, planting his feet firmly. "Let them come. I've been itching for a warm-up."

The Sentinels moved with an almost unnerving precision, joints whirring and sparks flying from their limbs as they advanced. The first one lunged at Ryu, swinging a blade-like arm in a deadly arc. Ryu sidestepped with ease, Voidfang flashing as he retaliated, slicing cleanly through the creature's midsection.

The Sentinel staggered but didn't fall, its Abyssal energy holding its frame together. Before Ryu could strike again, another Sentinel closed in, forcing him to retreat.

They're regenerating!" Draven shouted, thwacking his mace into a Sentinel's head. The blow crushed its cranium, but the fragments were already reassembling. "How do we kill these things?"

"Take out their cores!" Aris yelled, shooting an arrow into the chest of one Sentinel. Her shot hit the glowing orb within, and the construct folded in a lifeless heap.

Ryu nodded, his eyes squinting as he locked onto another Sentinel. He cast Voidfang's shadow strike, vanished for a second, and appeared behind his mark. In one swift motion, he rammed the blade into the core of the creature; it disintegrated at once.

"Two down," he murmured, moving toward the third.

Draven and Aris timed their attacks such that Draven drew focus while Aris delivered precise blows to the cores of his opponents. In a short time, the last construct also fell, disintegrating into a pile of glowing rubble.

Now that the Sentinels had been dispatched, the road became progressively worse with each step. Above them now was the towering Iron Spires, covered in an unnatural slick. There were strange symbols etched into the metal that pulsed with a gentle light that seemed to go along with the energy of the Abyssal Orb.

"This place doesn't come naturally," said Aris softly. "It's almost as if it were. designed."

Ryu paused to study the symbols a bit longer. "Designed for what?

Before anyone could answer, the ground shook violently. The spires groaned, and from their peaks, a massive shape began to emerge.

It was a colossus—an amalgamation of iron and Abyssal energy, its form jagged and unstable. Its head bore a faint resemblance to a knight's helmet, though its glowing eyes betrayed no trace of humanity. In its hands, it held an enormous warhammer, the weapon crackling with dark electricity.

Draven let out a low whistle. "Well, that's… excessive."

"Stay focused," Ryu said, his grip tightening on Voidfang. "We've handled worse."

The Abyssal Titan let out a guttural roar, raising its hammer high before slamming it down. The impact sent shockwaves through the ground, forcing the team to scatter.

"Aris, aim for the glowing points on its joints!" Ryu called out, dodging a follow-up swing.

On it!" Aris said, releasing an arrow that thudded into the Titan's knee. The impact made the huge creature stumble, but it quickly regained its balance, moving with a speed unnerving for its size.

Draven charged in, using his shield to ward off a swing from the Titan's hammer. The impact sent him sliding backward, but he didn't fall. "This thing hits like a fortress!

Ryu activated Voidfang's special ability, shadow-stepping behind the Titan. He aimed for the glowing core on its back, driving his blade in with all his strength. The Titan roared in pain, its movements becoming erratic as dark energy spilled from the wound.

"We're wearing it down!" Aris shouted, her arrows striking the Titan's exposed joints.

The battle continued, with each person from Team Eclipse fighting within his limits. The Titans started to get more desperate: each swing was creating immense holes in the ground. In the end, with an epic final combined blow, the final mighty roar of the Titans sounded before it fell and went into pieces.

When its body crumbled, yet another message appeared:

[Quest Update: 4/5 Abyssal Energy Signatures Neutralized.]

Draven sank to the ground, exhausted but triumphant. "One more to go. Then we're done with this nightmare, right?"

Aris didn't respond, her eyes fixed on the Sky Citadel in the distance. The Abyssal Orb's pulsing grew more intense, as if reacting to the citadel itself.

Ryu stood silently, gripping the fourth Core Fragment tightly. He didn't need to say it—they all knew the hardest part was yet to come.

"Let's keep moving," he said, his voice steady. "We're almost there."

With their goal in sight, Team Eclipse gathered their strength and prepared for the final leg of their journey.
