The silvery path forward took Team Eclipse out of the chamber of the Nexus Core and into a tunnel that was barely lit by flickering, dancing patterns of light. The oppressive throb of energy had faded away, leaving silence that seemed only to increase their sense of unease.
"Well, that was fun," Draven muttered, shouldering his shield as he trudged forward. "By fun, I mean the kind of fun where you almost get eaten by a glowing snake from another dimension."
Aris smirked despite the tension. "You survived. Barely."
Ryu walked in silence, the Abyssal Orb still clutched tightly in his hand. Its faint glow was steady now, but something about it felt… off. As the group moved, a new notification appeared in their vision:
[System Notice: Abyssal Nexus Core Neutralized.]
[Energy flow partially stabilized.]
[Global Announcement: Players may now access Tier 2 zones of Eternal Nexus Online.]
"Tier 2 zones?" Aris murmured, her pace slowing as she read the announcement. "I don't like the sound of that."
"It means we're moving up the food chain," Draven said, his tone grim. "Stronger monsters, more dangerous quests… and probably more glowing nightmares."
Ryu stopped in his tracks, eyes fixed forward. The tunnel led into a large cavern where dozens of players were congregated near the glowing waypoint. The chaotic chatter of voices echoed off the walls as people checked their notifications, exchanged items, and discussed the announcement.
"This must be the way out," Ryu said, pointing towards the waypoint.
Aris furrowed his brow. "It's too crowded. Let's not draw attention to ourselves."
As they drew near, the sea of players parted a little to let them through, some of them giving Team Eclipse curious glances. It did not take long for someone to spot the faint glow of the Abyssal Orb in Ryu's hand.
"Hey! Is that…?" a voice called out.
A tall man in dark armor came forward, his piercing gaze fixed on Ryu. The guild emblem on his chest gleamed in crimson—of a phoenix.
"It's them," he said, his voice carrying an air of authority. "They're the ones who cleared the Nexus Core."
The murmurs grew louder, and players turned to look at the group.
Draven groaned under his breath. "Great. Fame. Just what we needed."
Ryu stepped forward, meeting the man's gaze. "Who are you?"
The man crossed his arms, unreadable. "Kaze, leader of the Crimson Vanguards. You've just opened up the next level of this game for everyone, and I'd like to know how."
Ryu's grip on the Abyssal Orb tightened. "We cleared the Nexus Core. The system did the rest."
Kaze's eyes flicked to the orb. "That item. it's connected to the Nexus, isn't it? What else did you find in there?
"Nothing that concerns you," Aris said sharply, stepping in front of Ryu.
Kaze smirked, but there was no warmth in it. "I see. Well, don't think this achievement makes you invincible. The deeper we go, the more dangerous it gets. I hope your little team can keep up."
With that, he turned and walked away, his guild following close behind.
Aris sighed, her tension easing slightly. "What's his problem?"
"Power," Draven said simply. "The stronger we get, the more people like him will come after us."
A notification appeared, cutting their conversation short:
[Waypoint Activated: Return to Central Haven?]
[Yes/No]
Ryu glanced at the others. "Let's get out of here."
They all selected Yes, and in an instant, the cavern dissolved into light.
When they reappeared, the bustling streets of Central Haven greeted them. The city was livelier than ever, with players discussing the new announcement and preparing for the challenges of the Tier 2 zones.
Draven stretched, letting out a satisfied groan. "Civilization. Finally."
Aris shot him a sideways glance. "We're not done yet. This was just the first step."
He looked towards the Abyssal Orb, which pulsed softly with a glow that seemed to sync in perfect rhythm with his heartbeat. He was under the impression that their journey into the Abyss was just the start of things.
A new notification arrived:
[System Notice: Side Quest Unlocked - Echoes of the Abyss.]
[Objective: Investigate remaining Abyssal energy signatures across Tier 2 zones.]
Ryu sighed. "Well, it looks like there's more work for us."
Draven merely muttered on, "Of course there is.".
As they approached the marketplace to restock, a shadow fell over them. Ryu looked up without thinking and froze. Suspended high above the city, barely visible against the bright sky, was an enormous structure that seemed to float there—a dark-clouded fortress with runes glowing faintly.
There was a notification:
[Global Event Unlocked: Sky Citadel – The Eternal Watcher.]
[Event Starts: 48 Hours.]
Aris turned her gaze toward it, her eyes narrowing. "That's new."
Draven whistled. "You think we'll get a break before we're dragged into that thing?"
"Doubt it," Ryu said quietly, his gaze lingering on the citadel. "Whatever's waiting for us up there… it's going to change everything."
With a renewed sense of purpose—and a lingering unease—Team Eclipse continued into the city, ready to face the next chapter of their journey.
