Chapter 11 - Chapter 11: Into the Forge

Waking up Kain is already feeling swore, and the day hasn't even started. Kain leaves the closet and strides to the forge door and knocks on it. Vulcan answers.

"Kid, grab that sword and come on in. I'll show you how it works."

Kain takes the scrap sword from the goblin and strides into the forge.

Inside the forge, a large metal basin filled with coal stood ready. A large bellow on the side allowed air to be blown into the coals. I also observed an anvil positioned centrally within the room, along with a table on the right wall displaying bones and leather.

"Alright kid, I'm going to show you how to heat up the metal. The anvil is for shaping the metal, and that table is for sharpening it and making handles."

"The nicer forges are powered by cores like the fire attribute lizard I talked to you about. They also have a sharpening wheel and even their own area to enchant."

"Oh my goodness, can you tell me all about enchanting? I would absolutely love to know more!"

"I'd absolutely love to do it, but it's an expensive profession. However, it can add some amazing attributes and sub-effects to the weapon. The most common is to increase sharpness or durability, which is great. Some are even skilled enough to make the blades restore themselves and grow stronger with the monsters you defeat! You'll need blood and cores to enchant and even an inscription pen, as well as knowing the patterns for the inscription. There are so many options! And the same goes for blacksmiths. There are tons of materials besides just iron."

"But first, let me tell you about the amazing ranks of weapons! It all starts with unranked, which some people call "trash."like that sword and hammer! Then, it goes to common, uncommon, rare, epic, legendary, and finally, sacred. The better the rank, the better the blade! There are some exceptions, like growth blades that can grow stronger, but normally, this is true."

"The more rare your weapons and armor, the more experience you'll gain, making it easier to achieve the same or higher rarity! Also, metals will have a rarity! For example, we're working with iron, an unranked metal. You can make one rarity up from the base materials used, which is pretty cool. It's not easy, but it's fun!"

"Let's dive right in and start building your skills! This is going to be a great help with blacksmithing! First up is heating. We don't have the stuff for casting, but that's okay because we're going to have a lot of fun trying to figure it out. We're going to stick it into the coals, cover it most of the way, and use the bellows to get it up to temperature. Iron doesn't need to be that hot, so coal will work just fine. When the iron is almost a yellow color, you take it out. We're going to hammer it back into an ingot shape, and it's going to be great! This is where it gets really interesting! We're going to fold it over on itself and seal it to make one piece. If the iron is too cold, then this isn't going to work. But if it's just right, it'll be a bright yellow color, which is perfect. Give it a try!"

Kain takes the sword and puts it into the coal. He goes to the bellows and starts to pump it, keeping an eye on the color of the sword. When it looks yellow, he takes it out with tongs and hammers it with his other hand, making inconsistent swings and not hitting where he needs to.

"Listen up. Hit it at a steady pace and with the same strength every time. It's soft when heated properly. If it starts to fill in and not move how you'd like, put it back in and heat it".

Kain follows the advice, but does it his way. He takes the folded but not sealed ingot and reheats it. He takes it back to the anvil and shapes it some more. He repeats this process until he has a rectangle block. It wasn't pretty, but it was a rectangle. Kain did it in almost 40 minutes. Now he is sweating quite hard.

"I've got some advice for you. When you're hammering, rotate the object you're hamming in between each hit. Take a break and eat. Then we'll shape it into a knife or dagger. Whatever you can manage."

Kain and Vulcan eat and then take an hour-long break.

"Heat up that ingot and start hammering it into something useful. I'm heading out to deliver a sword and get more food. Good luck, kid. If you mess up, just reheat it and turn it back into an ingot."

Kain takes the ingot and throws it into the furnace, using the bellows until it reaches the yellow color again. Then, he picks it up with tongs and hammers it again and again, shaping it into a knife that will be perfect for removing cores. After heating, hammering, and repeating, he has the shape he was going for. He was aiming for a hunting knife, but it looks more like a kitchen knife with a J-shaped tang. This took over two hours to complete. In the middle, he got some notifications but ignored them. He decided to take a break.

Mission Learn a new Skill I Completed has now changed to Learn a new Skill II

Task learn 2 more skills 1/2

Reward 1skill point

Given that information, I'm confident that the other missions will work in a similar way. However, I now have two skill points, and I'm unsure whether it's better to use them now or save them.

Vulcan walks into the Forge with a sack of stuff and sees that Kain is sitting there.

Did you finish?

Kain snaps out of thought "oh yes I have."

"Let me see what you got."

Kain hands him the knife

"Oh you made a blacksmith knife".

Kain didn't mean to or even know what it was called but works out.

"OK, now we need to sharpen it. Put some water on the quartz rock in front of you. Slide the knife back and forth on it. It's going to take a while, so be prepared."
