Chapter 5 - Chapter five: first impression

Here's the updated version with Su Feiyan's name:

First Impressions

The first English class was much more relaxed than Su Feiyan had expected. The teacher smiled from the front of the classroom and demonstrated some daily expressions before dividing the class into groups for practice. Su Feiyan was paired with Lin Xi, and they sat in the back row, with sunlight streaming through the curtains and filling the room with the warmth of the afternoon.

"Let's start with a simple dialogue," the teacher said, pointing to the example sentences on the board. Lin Xi lowered her head, carefully picking up her pen, preparing to jot down the dialogue. Her movements were delicate, as if she were protecting something precious.

"Su Feiyan, why don't you try the first sentence?" the teacher said kindly, pointing to a simple conversation on the board: "How are you today?"

Su Feiyan nodded and leaned toward the desk, his ears keenly capturing every syllable. He clearly read the sentence aloud: "I'm fine, thank you. And you?"

Lin Xi hesitated slightly but, after hearing Su Feiyan's fluent response, softly repeated, "I'm fine, thank you."

Su Feiyan listened to her soft voice and smiled slightly. "You spoke very well."

Lin Xi blinked in surprise and lowered her head. For some reason, her cheeks flushed. "Thank you… I'm a little nervous," she murmured.

At that moment, laughter rippled through the classroom. A few boys from the front row began teasing, "Hey, Su Feiyan, you two make a great team!"

"Yeah, looks like you're a perfect match!" another boy added with a grin.

Su Feiyan smiled softly when he heard their teasing, feeling a sense of warmth. He hadn't seen their faces, but from the friendly and joking tone in their voices, he knew they weren't looking at him with anything but kindness.

"We're just practicing," Su Feiyan responded lightly.

Lin Xi's face turned red again. She lowered her head and nervously pinched her fingers together. "Sorry, I didn't expect to draw so much attention," she whispered.

Su Feiyan noticed her nervousness, but he also noticed her small, unconscious gestures—pinching her fingers, her slight trembling when she lowered her head. He realized that while he couldn't see these details, the little motions and her voice helped him understand her better. A subtle feeling stirred in him, and he wanted to offer her comfort when she was uneasy.

"It's okay, your voice sounds nice," Su Feiyan said softly, almost instinctively, offering a gentle reassurance.

Lin Xi's heart skipped a beat. She nervously bit her lip, her gaze flickering. "Thank you… you too."

The class continued, and it was their turn to respond to the next dialogue question. This time, the topic was about personal interests. Lin Xi relaxed a little and began speaking more naturally. "I like reading books. What about you?"

"I like reading books too," Su Feiyan replied softly. "But I prefer playing computer fighting games."

Lin Xi blinked in surprise. "Fighting games? How do you play them?"

"I use a braille display and speech recognition software," Su Feiyan smiled. "I can feel the braille on the display or control the computer through voice commands. In fighting games, the controls are a matter of listening to the different sounds made by the characters. Each move has a distinct sound, so I can tell what's happening based on that."

"Wow, that's amazing!" Lin Xi said in surprise. "I didn't know you could play games like that."

"It's actually quite simple," Su Feiyan added with a grin. "You just need to stay sensitive to the sound and rhythm of each action."

At this moment, a few classmates gathered around, curious. "You're really good at games? I've never seen a blind person play games like that!"

"Yeah," Su Feiyan nodded, "I like to challenge myself, especially with fighting games. It's not just a game—it's a test of skill and reaction speed."

Lin Xi listened, stunned. She thought Su Feiyan's way of living was unique, and she admired his confidence and composure in facing challenges.

Suddenly, the bell rang, signaling the end of the class. The students stood up, gathering their things, and Su Feiyan and Lin Xi did the same. As they walked out of the classroom, Su Feiyan felt the warm atmosphere of the class, and it didn't feel as unfamiliar or tense as before. Although he couldn't see, he could sense the friendliness and acceptance from the class.
