Chapter 20 - The gatekeeper's wrath

The fortress gates creaked open, revealing the Gatekeeper. It was a towering humanoid creature, clad in dark, jagged armor that radiated an ominous energy. A massive double-edged axe rested on its shoulder, its blade glowing faintly with runic inscriptions. The creature's eyes burned with a fiery intensity as it stepped forward, its footfalls echoing like thunder.

The system's voice rang out:

"Final Challenge: Defeat the Gatekeeper. Rewards: Advancement to the Fifth Floor, enhanced skill progression, and a class-specific reward."

Rodensky clenched his sword tightly, his mind racing. "We don't have beasts, summons, or even ranged abilities. This is going to be brutal."

Emmanuel adjusted his grip on his weapon, his vampiric bloodline's power subtly pulsing around him. "Then we make do with what we have. Ready?"

Rodensky nodded.

Phase 1: The Onslaught

The Gatekeeper roared, its voice shaking the air. Without warning, it charged, its massive axe cleaving the ground in a powerful downward swing. Rodensky rolled to the side, narrowly avoiding the blow as the earth beneath him cracked and splintered.

Emmanuel darted forward, his enhanced speed putting him behind the Gatekeeper. He lashed out with his blood tendrils, aiming for the vulnerable joints in its armor. The tendrils struck true, but the Gatekeeper barely flinched.

"Looks like brute force isn't enough," Emmanuel growled.

Rodensky darted in, his elf agility allowing him to dance around the Gatekeeper's wide, sweeping strikes. He aimed for the gaps in its armor, his blade striking with precision. Sparks flew, and while the Gatekeeper staggered slightly, it quickly recovered and retaliated with a ferocious backhand that sent Rodensky skidding across the ground.

Phase 2: The Summoning

The Gatekeeper raised its axe, and the runes on its blade flared to life. A circle of dark energy formed around it, summoning spectral warriors—ethereal knights armed with shadowy weapons.

"Of course, it's never just one thing," Emmanuel muttered, his tendrils coiling defensively.

Rodensky groaned as he got back to his feet. "You focus on the warriors; I'll keep the big guy busy."

Emmanuel nodded, diving into the fray. His tendrils weaved through the spectral warriors, disrupting their movements and giving him openings to strike. Each defeated warrior dissolved into shadow, only for another to take its place.

Meanwhile, Rodensky used his agility to stay ahead of the Gatekeeper's relentless attacks. He studied its movements, looking for patterns or weaknesses. As the Gatekeeper swung its axe in a wide arc, Rodensky saw his chance. He leaped onto the weapon's handle and ran up its arm, driving his blade into the exposed flesh between the armor plates at its shoulder.

The Gatekeeper roared in pain, shaking him off with a violent jerk.

"Nice hit!" Emmanuel called out, fending off another wave of spectral warriors.

Phase 3: The Final Stand

The Gatekeeper slammed its axe into the ground, sending shockwaves rippling outward. Rodensky and Emmanuel were thrown back, struggling to stay on their feet.

The system chimed:

"Warning: The Gatekeeper is entering its berserk state. Dodge rate and attack power increased by 50%."

"Perfect timing," Rodensky muttered, wiping blood from his lip.

The Gatekeeper's movements became erratic, its strikes faster and more powerful. Emmanuel's tendrils barely deflected a swing that would have cleaved him in two. Rodensky relied entirely on his speed, weaving through the flurry of attacks with precision.

But they couldn't hold out forever. The Gatekeeper's relentless assault began to wear them down, their movements slowing as exhaustion set in.

Rodensky's mind raced. "We need to finish this now. Any ideas?"

Emmanuel grinned through gritted teeth. "I've got one. Keep him distracted."

Rodensky nodded and charged in, his blade flashing as he drew the Gatekeeper's attention. The creature roared, focusing all its fury on him.

Meanwhile, Emmanuel summoned all his remaining energy, his blood tendrils forming a massive, coiled spear. He hurled it with all his might, the crimson weapon streaking through the air and piercing the Gatekeeper's chest.

The creature staggered, its movements faltering. Rodensky seized the opportunity, leaping onto its back and driving his sword into the base of its neck.

The Gatekeeper let out a final, guttural roar before collapsing to the ground.

"Challenge complete. The Gatekeeper has been defeated."

The Aftermath

As the Gatekeeper's body dissolved into ash, the system's voice echoed:

"Congratulations, challengers. Rewards unlocked: Enhanced class-specific skills and progression to the Fifth Floor."

A glowing chest appeared before them, containing the promised rewards.

Rodensky opened his Status Window.

New Skill: Beast Whisper (Class-specific): Enhances communication with beasts, increasing taming success rates.

Passive Ability: Elven Reflexes: Further boosts agility and reaction time.

Emmanuel's Status Window displayed similar enhancements, including:

New Skill: Dragon Kin Bond (Class-specific): Strengthens the connection with dragons, increasing their growth and combat potential.

Passive Ability: Blood Frenzy: Temporarily increases attack power after draining an enemy's blood.

Rodensky slumped against a nearby rock, breathing heavily. "We're alive… barely."

Emmanuel chuckled, sitting beside him. "And we're stronger than ever."

The system chimed again:

"Proceed to the Fifth Floor? Yes/No."

They exchanged a glance. "Not yet," Rodensky said. "We need to recover and strategize."

As they rested, the system displayed a final message:

"Warning: Real-world synchronization accelerating. Consequences imminent."

Rodensky frowned. "Looks like the real world isn't waiting for us to catch up."

Emmanuel cracked his knuckles. "Good. Let's finish this training and be ready for whatever's out there."
