Chapter 23 - The sixth floor: shadow of the unknown

The portal shimmered with an eerie, dark energy as Rodensky and Emmanuel stepped through, their beasts, Rokura and Abaddon, close behind. Emerging on the other side, they found themselves in a vast, desolate canyon. The air was thick with an ominous energy, and the ground beneath their feet seemed to pulse as though alive.

The system's voice echoed:

"Welcome to the Sixth Floor. Challenge: The Shadows of the Unknown. The challengers must navigate the Obsidian Ravine, uncover its secrets, and eliminate the lurking threat that poisons this land. Beware: the enemies here are shrouded in darkness, and only light can expose their true form."

A faint blue flame flickered into existence before them, hovering at chest height.

"This is your Guiding Flame. Protect it well; without it, the shadows will consume you."

---

Into the Ravine

The ravine was a labyrinth of jagged cliffs and narrow pathways. The faint glow of the Guiding Flame illuminated only a small radius around them, leaving the surrounding darkness impenetrable.

"Stay close to the flame," Emmanuel said, his voice low.

Rokura's crystal wings refracted the light, casting shimmering patterns on the canyon walls, while Abaddon's soft growls hinted at unseen dangers lurking in the shadows.

It didn't take long for the first threat to appear. A shadowy figure lunged from the darkness, its form shifting and writhing. The Guiding Flame revealed its true shape: a towering wraith with jagged claws and hollow, glowing eyes.

---

The First Encounter

"Rokura, flank it!" Rodensky commanded, gripping his sword tightly.

Rokura darted forward, its claws slashing at the wraith. The creature shrieked but retaliated, its shadowy claws striking back with terrifying speed. Emmanuel joined the fray, his blade slicing through the creature's form while Abaddon unleashed a stream of fire.

However, each time they struck the wraith, its body seemed to reform.

"The flame!" Rodensky shouted. "Get it closer to the flame!"

Rokura pushed the wraith into the light of the Guiding Flame. The creature let out an otherworldly scream as its shadowy body dissolved, leaving behind a dark crystal.

Emmanuel picked up the crystal, examining it. "This must be important. Let's hold onto it."

---

The Heart of the Ravine

As they ventured deeper, the attacks became more frequent. Wraiths, shadow beasts, and even shadow-possessed rock golems emerged from the darkness. Rodensky and Emmanuel fought tirelessly, their bond with Rokura and Abaddon proving essential as the challenges grew fiercer.

Along the way, they discovered ancient inscriptions carved into the canyon walls. The Guiding Flame revealed the text:

"The light shall purify the dark, but only the united hearts shall conquer the shadow's core."

"What does that mean?" Emmanuel asked, frowning.

Rodensky traced the words with his fingers. "It's probably a clue for whatever's waiting for us at the end."

---

The Core of Shadows

Hours later, they reached a vast, open chamber at the ravine's heart. A massive black crystal hovered in the air, pulsating with dark energy. Around it swirled dozens of shadow creatures, their forms indistinct but menacing.

The system's voice spoke:

"The Core of Shadows has been located. Destroy the core to cleanse the ravine and complete the challenge."

"Easier said than done," Emmanuel muttered, tightening his grip on his sword.

---

The Battle for the Core

The moment they stepped into the chamber, the shadow creatures descended upon them. Rokura and Abaddon leapt into action, fighting fiercely alongside their masters.

Rodensky and Rokura worked in perfect unison, the lion's agility and Rodensky's precision strikes tearing through the smaller shadows. Meanwhile, Emmanuel and Abaddon focused on defending the Guiding Flame, ensuring it stayed lit.

As the battle raged, Rodensky noticed something strange. "The crystal! It's controlling them!"

"We need to destroy it!" Emmanuel shouted, deflecting a shadow beast's attack.

Rodensky nodded. "Cover me!"

---

Breaking the Core

While Emmanuel and Abaddon kept the shadow creatures at bay, Rodensky and Rokura made a break for the crystal. Shadows swirled around them, trying to block their path, but Rokura's shimmering wings created a barrier of light that pushed them back.

Reaching the core, Rodensky plunged his sword into it with all his strength. The crystal cracked but didn't break.

"Again!" Emmanuel urged.

Rokura roared, its claws glowing with crystalline energy as it struck the core alongside Rodensky. With a deafening crack, the crystal shattered, sending a wave of light through the chamber. The shadow creatures dissolved, their forms unable to exist without the core's influence.

---

The Aftermath

The Guiding Flame grew brighter, enveloping the chamber in a warm, soothing glow. The system's voice echoed once more:

"Challenge complete. The Obsidian Ravine has been cleansed. Rewards distributed. Portal to the Seventh Floor unlocked."

Two treasure chests appeared before them. Inside, they found rare materials for evolving their beasts and weapons infused with light energy, perfectly suited for combating shadow creatures.

Rodensky patted Rokura's head. "Good job, buddy. You were amazing out there."

Emmanuel nodded, scratching under Abaddon's chin. "Looks like we've earned ourselves a break before the next floor."

They both sat on the ground, catching their breath and sharing a rare moment of quiet amidst the chaos.

"Do you think we'll ever find out how many floors there are?" Rodensky asked.

Emmanuel shrugged. "Does it matter? We'll just keep climbing."

They exchanged determined smiles before turning their attention to the glowing portal leading to the Seventh Floor.
