Chapter 25 - Eighth floor: Allies and adversaries

Rodensky and Emmanuel stepped through the portal, their senses on high alert. Instead of the isolation they'd grown accustomed to, the environment was alive with activity. They found themselves in a massive coliseum-like arena, where groups of challengers armed with various weapons and some flanked by tamed beasts were scattered across the field.

The system's voice boomed:

"Welcome to the Eighth Floor. Challenge: Forge alliances or face annihilation. Objective: Defeat the Apex Guardian as a united force or risk mutual failure. Warning: The Apex Guardian will adapt to the strategies of the challengers. Cooperation is key."

Rodensky exchanged a wary glance with Emmanuel. "Looks like we're not alone this time."

Emmanuel smirked, surveying the groups around them. "The question is, can we trust them?"

Encountering Other Challengers

The duo moved cautiously through the arena, Rokura and Abaddon keeping close. Their presence drew attention, and soon a group of challengers approached.

A tall woman clad in shimmering mage robes stepped forward, flanked by a ferocious wolf with silver fur. Her name tag read Lira. "You two seem capable," she said, her voice commanding. "Join our team, and we'll ensure mutual survival."

Rodensky raised an eyebrow. "What's the catch?"

"No catch," Lira replied smoothly. "But we'll need to strategize if we're going to take down the Apex Guardian. Lone wolves won't make it here."

Before Rodensky could respond, a loud crash echoed across the arena. A towering, multi-limbed creature emerged from the shadows, its body a grotesque amalgamation of beast and machine.

The system announced:

"The Apex Guardian has arrived. All challengers, prepare for battle."

The Battle with the Apex Guardian

Chaos erupted as challengers scrambled to organize themselves. The Apex Guardian roared, unleashing waves of energy that sent shockwaves across the arena.

Rodensky and Emmanuel quickly joined forces with Lira and her team.

"Focus on its weak points!" Rodensky shouted, directing Rokura to attack the Guardian's exposed joints.

Abaddon took to the air, unleashing torrents of fire at the creature's glowing core. Other challengers contributed with magic spells, arrows, and melee attacks.

But the Apex Guardian adapted swiftly. Its limbs transformed into bladed weapons, cutting through defenses. Several challengers fell, their screams echoing in the chaos.

"This isn't working!" Emmanuel yelled.

Lira gritted her teeth. "We need to hit it with everything we've got—together!"

Rodensky nodded. "Everyone, concentrate fire on its core!"

The coordinated assault finally overwhelmed the Apex Guardian's defenses. With a deafening roar, the creature collapsed, its body disintegrating into light.

The Aftermath in the Arena

The system's voice returned:

"Challenge complete. Rewards distributed. Portal to the Ninth Floor unlocked."

Treasure chests appeared, filled with high-grade equipment and materials. Rodensky and Emmanuel upgraded their gear, their confidence growing.

Before stepping into the next portal, Rodensky turned to Lira. "If we meet again, let's fight together."

Lira smirked. "We'll see."

The Real-World Chaos

Back on Earth, the fusion of Astralis with reality had plunged humanity into turmoil. Mutant beasts roamed the lands, each one stronger and more vicious than the last. Cities were overrun, and the military struggled to contain the threat.

In hastily constructed safe zones, the government had established bases where scientists worked tirelessly to understand the phenomenon. Despite their efforts, every attempt to awaken non-challengers failed.

---

The Rise of the Challengers

The returnees from the labyrinth had become humanity's only hope. Their newfound powers, classes, and skills allowed them to repel the beasts with relative ease. However, this power came with its own problems.

Wealthy challengers began forming exclusive guilds, recruiting only the strongest and leaving others to fend for themselves. Media outlets debated their growing influence, while governments worked to regulate their activities.

One guild, The Vanguard, had already established dominance. Its leader, a former mage named Ares, had taken control of Europe's safe zones, declaring himself the de facto ruler.

A Meeting of Leaders

In one of the government safe zones, a high-ranking official addressed a room of challengers and scientists.

"We acknowledge the challengers as humanity's only hope," the official began. "You've proven capable of facing these monsters where our military has failed. That's why we're allocating resources to support you."

"What about awakening the rest of humanity?" a reporter asked.

A scientist shook his head. "All attempts have failed. Only those who entered the training hall seem capable of developing these abilities."

The room buzzed with murmurs. Some challengers looked proud, others uneasy.

Rodensky and Emmanuel's Resolve

Far above the chaos, Rodensky and Emmanuel prepared for the Ninth Floor. But they couldn't ignore the weight of what was happening in the real world.

"We have to finish this," Rodensky said, his voice steady. "If we don't, humanity's done for."

Emmanuel nodded. "Then let's keep going. Together."

They stepped through the portal, ready to face whatever awaited them.
