Chereads / SYLUS / Chapter 40 - chapter 40

Chapter 40 - chapter 40

The room was silent except for the faint rustling of the curtains in the breeze. Rose lay still, her mind racing with the revelations from her journal. The words haunted her, repeating like a mantra:

"To leave this world, one bond must break."

Sylus sat in a chair across the room, sharpening his blade methodically. The faint metallic scrape reverberated through the dimly lit room, blending with the soft hum of the city beyond the cracked window. Faint streaks of neon light spilled across the worn wooden floor, casting shifting patterns that seemed alive, almost sentient. Each scrape of metal against stone seemed louder in the quiet, a reminder of the perilous world they were trapped in.

He glanced at her occasionally, his sharp, silver-gray eyes lingering on her face as if he could sense her unease.

Rose turned onto her side, clutching the journal beneath her pillow. Her heart ached with questions she couldn't ask him—questions that would only lead to truths she wasn't ready to face.

---

The following morning, Rose decided to act as if nothing had changed. She couldn't afford to let Sylus or Lucas catch wind of what she had uncovered. The riddle was hers alone to bear.

The safehouse, nestled deep within the labyrinth of the underground city, was both a sanctuary and a prison. The stale air carried a faint metallic tang, a remnant of the industrial decay that clung to every corner. The walls were lined with rusted pipes that hissed occasionally, reminding them that even this refuge wasn't entirely safe.

Breakfast was a simple affair, the three of them seated at the small wooden table. A single flickering bulb hung above them, casting shadows that seemed to dance with every movement. Lucas was recounting a run-in with a particularly persistent bounty hunter, his tone half-amused, half-annoyed. Sylus listened with a smirk, occasionally glancing at Rose.

"Something on your mind, Rose?" Lucas asked suddenly, breaking her thoughts.

Rose blinked, forcing a casual smile. "Just thinking about our next move. What's the plan?"

Sylus leaned back in his chair, the wood creaking under his weight, his sharp gaze locking onto hers. "We need to keep moving. The Consortium won't stop hunting us, especially now that Seraphina's involved."

The mention of Seraphina made Rose's stomach churn. Her cryptic riddle, paired with the one Rose had already written in her journal, felt like a ticking time bomb.

"Do you think Seraphina was telling the truth?" she asked cautiously, testing the waters.

Lucas snorted. "She thrives on manipulation. Truth and lies are tools to her. Why?"

Rose shrugged, feigning indifference. "Just wondering if there's a way to use her words against her."

Sylus studied her for a moment, his expression unreadable. "We don't trust her, but we don't ignore her either. She knows things we don't."

---

That night, as they prepared to leave the safehouse, Rose found herself alone with Sylus. Lucas had gone to scout the area, leaving the two of them in a charged silence.

The air outside was heavy with the scent of oil and damp earth, and the faint hum of the city above buzzed like a distant heartbeat. The alleyways stretched endlessly in both directions, cloaked in shadows that seemed to swallow the light.

Sylus watched her as she adjusted the straps on her bag, his eyes softening for just a moment. "You've been different since Seraphina showed up," he said quietly.

Rose froze, her heart pounding. "What do you mean?"

"You're distracted," he said, stepping closer. "Like you're carrying something heavy."

Rose avoided his gaze, busying herself with her bag. "I'm fine. Just... processing everything."

Sylus reached out, his hand brushing her shoulder lightly. The warmth of his touch sent a jolt through her. "You don't have to carry it alone," he said, his voice almost a whisper.

Rose looked up at him, her chest tightening. For a brief moment, she considered telling him about the journal, about the riddle, about everything. But then the words echoed in her mind:

"The choice will change you as much as it changes them."

She couldn't risk it. Not yet.

"I'm okay, Sylus," she said softly, forcing a small smile. "Really."

He didn't look convinced, but he didn't push further. Instead, he nodded and stepped back, his walls sliding back into place.

---

As they moved through the quiet streets, Rose's mind raced. The world around them felt alive, the air thick with tension. Neon signs buzzed faintly above boarded-up shops, their colors casting eerie reflections on the wet cobblestone streets. The distant sound of voices—muffled and indistinct—echoed through the labyrinthine alleys, a constant reminder of the danger that lurked around every corner.

Lucas appeared from the shadows, his expression grim. "We've got company," he said curtly. "A lot of it."

Sylus cursed under his breath, his sharp eyes scanning their surroundings. "How many?"

"Too many for a straight fight," Lucas replied. "We need to move. Now."

Rose followed as Sylus led them deeper into the maze of alleyways, her heart pounding. The journal weighed heavily in her bag, its secrets gnawing at her as danger closed in around them.

The further they ran, the more the city seemed to twist and shift around them. Steam hissed from vents, obscuring their path, and the shadows seemed to move, whispering threats just out of reach.

But even as fear gripped her, a new resolve began to take root.

She wouldn't be a passive player in this game.

If there was a way to escape, she would find it.

And if that meant breaking her bond with Sylus...

She swallowed hard, pushing the thought aside.

She would face that choice when the time came. For now, she had to survive.
