Chereads / SYLUS / Chapter 41 - chapter 41

Chapter 41 - chapter 41

The labyrinth of alleys seemed endless, the distant sound of footsteps growing louder with every passing second. Sylus led the way, his movements swift and precise, while Lucas trailed behind, ensuring no one followed too closely. Rose kept to the middle, her breathing steady but her mind a storm of thoughts.

The journal. The riddles. The impossible choices. They hung over her like a shadow, threatening to drown her resolve. Yet, something about the night—the chase, the danger—ignited a fire within her. She wouldn't let herself become a victim. Not anymore.

"Through here," Sylus whispered, gesturing toward a narrow passage.

They ducked into the shadows, the air thick with tension. Sylus pressed Rose gently against the wall, shielding her with his body. The faint sound of boots clattering against cobblestones passed them by, and for a brief moment, silence returned.

"We can't keep running like this," Lucas muttered, his voice low but sharp. "They'll pin us down eventually."

"Not tonight," Sylus replied firmly, his gaze locked on Rose. "We're getting out of this."

Rose clenched her fists. "I'm not holding you back, Sylus. If you need to—"

"Stop," he interrupted, his tone soft but unyielding. "You're not holding anyone back. Got it?"

She nodded, though doubt still gnawed at her. She wasn't sure if his words were for her comfort or his own.

An hour later, they reached an abandoned clock tower on the outskirts of the city. The air inside was musty, the walls lined with rusted gears and forgotten machinery. It wasn't much, but it would do for the night.

As Lucas scouted the perimeter, Sylus and Rose settled near the base of the tower. Sylus leaned against a broken console, his eyes scanning the room. Rose sat a few feet away, the journal burning in her bag.

She couldn't shake the feeling that now was the time to confront what she'd uncovered. But how could she? How could she bring herself to tell Sylus that their bond—their growing connection—might be the very thing that trapped him here forever?

"Rose," Sylus's voice broke the silence, startling her. "What's really going on?"

She looked up, her heart racing. "What do you mean?"

"You've been... different," he said, his eyes narrowing slightly. "Since Seraphina. Since that journal you've been carrying everywhere. You're hiding something."

Her breath caught, but she forced herself to stay calm. "I've been trying to figure out how to leave this world," she admitted. "That's all."

Sylus frowned, his expression darkening. "And what have you found?"

Rose hesitated, her mind racing for a way to tell him the truth without revealing everything. "Just... riddles," she said finally. "Cryptic clues that don't make sense yet."

His gaze lingered on her, searching for the truth. "You don't have to do this alone, Rose," he said quietly. "Whatever you've found, we can figure it out together."

The sincerity in his voice made her chest ache, but she shook her head. "Some things I have to figure out for myself."

Sylus opened his mouth to respond, but before he could, Lucas burst back into the room.

"We've got a problem," he said grimly. "They're closing in. Fast."

Sylus straightened, his expression instantly sharpening. "How many?"

"Too many to fight," Lucas replied. "We need to move. Now."

As they slipped back into the night, Rose couldn't shake the feeling that time was running out. The Consortium's agents were relentless, and every second felt like borrowed time. Yet, as they navigated the twisting streets, her resolve only grew stronger.

She would find a way out of this world.

She would decipher the riddles.

And she would protect the people she cared about—even if it meant breaking her own heart in the process.

But as they reached the outskirts of the city, a chill ran down her spine.

A figure stepped out of the shadows, their face hidden beneath a dark hood. Their voice, calm yet menacing, echoed through the still air.

"Rose Kylie," they said, their tone laced with an unsettling familiarity. "You've come far... but your journey ends here."

Sylus immediately stepped in front of her, his blade at the ready. Lucas flanked the other side, his stance equally defensive.

But Rose's attention was locked on the figure. There was something about them—something that felt eerily familiar.

"You know me," she said, her voice steady despite the fear crawling up her spine. "Who are you?"

The figure chuckled, a sound that sent shivers down her spine.

"All will be revealed soon enough," they said. "But first... let's see how far you're willing to go to protect your precious bond."

Before anyone could react, the figure raised a hand, and the ground beneath them began to shake.

Rose's heart pounded as the riddle from her journal flashed in her mind once more:

"One stays, one free. The choice is hers..."

The game had just taken a darker turn.
