Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: You can't marry her.

"What do you mean she's the one you love?". Jung-Su asked his son in anger. He had prepared heavily for his son's return from his study in America.

He had even arranged a wife for him. His ex, Ji-Won. She was the heiress of The King's Group. The second biggest company in Seoul after his father's company The Emerald Group. They had dated since high school but broke up before he traveled abroad. Jung-Su had always felt that they were meant for each other but, his son Jung-Sik had brought home a black-American woman, therefore, ruining his plans to re-unite them.

"Abeoji, this woman right here Carolyn Johnson is the woman I fell in love with and we are getting married". Jung-Sik said with enthusiasm. "Good evening sir. My name is Carolyn Johnson. It's a pleasure to meet you". Carolyn noticed something was off and decided to introduce herself properly but instead of replying to her greeting's Jung-Su took his son by the hand and led him outside.

"What you think you are doing? Who told you we can get married to black American women".Jung-Su decided to talk sense into his son. " Abeoji, can you stop? You are to be happy for me and give us your...". "What blessings?".

Jung-Su interrupted."Yes why not? Listen Abeoji I have done everything that you have told me to do in this life and one of the things you asked me to do was to always follow my heart and that is exactly what I am doing" Jung-Sik replied. "If I had known that telling you to follow your heart will lead you to making such stupid decision I wouldn't have said that. What do you think harabeoji will say. Now you listen, I want you to get married to Ji-Won that way we can maintain this family's name. Do you hear me?".

Jung-Su asked patiently waiting for Jung-Sik's reply which left him speechless. "No, Abeoji.Ji-Won broke me. I will get married to Carolyn only her". Jung-Sik stomped out in rage. "Jung-Sik! Jung Sik!". He ignored the calls of his father.

Meanwhile, Carolyn felt uncomfortable. The looks she got from everyone sent chills to her spine. "Annyeong-hasseoyo. Oh sorry, I don't think you speak Korean do you?" Jung-Ri, Jung-Sik's younger sister asked Carolyn in a very sarcastic manner. " I speak a little of your language and hear a lot". Carolyn returned the sarcasm. "Dae-bak you really have guts, listen it's obvious that no-one wants you hear and even if my father do allow you to marry my brother, your life would be a living hell".

Jung-Ri said looking directly into Carolyn's eyes. This act got Carolyn intimidated a bit. She wanted to speak up but Jung-Jin interrupted the conversation "Jung-Ri that is no way to treat our guest. Go to your room". Jung-Ri smiled wickedly, picked up her phone on the table and headed to her room like her mum had instructed her to.

"Hello dear! I am Jung-Sik's mother Jung-Jin". Jung-Jin smiled and brought her hands towards Carolyn's for a hand shake.Carolyn reciprocated and said "I'm Carolyn Johnson Jung-Sik's finaceè". Jung-Jin paused a bit and examined the girl in front of her. She looked nothing like them and she wondered the audacity she had to introduce herself as her son's fiancée. "Eeomoni, jal-jinesseyo? I have to leave now with Carolyn to the hotel, we would meet later".

Jung-Sik said to his mother without batting an eyelid and grabbed Carolyn by the hand. He knew that his mom would be no different from his father so there was no need talking about it. "You are going no where!!!" Jung-Su yelled from behind. He was already pissed by his son's attitude earlier and couldn't take it anymore."Yeobo! What is going on". Jung-Jin asked.

"Your son came back home with this outcast and lost his manners. Did he even talk to you like he normally does? Listen Carolyn or whatever your name is I Jung-Su Jung-Sik's father do not approve of this marriage and I will do everything in my power to make sure that it doesn't happen". Jung-Su said pointing directly at Carolyn.

Carolyn couldn't take the embarrassment and made a move to leave but just then one of the cooks passed with a bowl of ramen. Carolyn felt disgusted by the smell and threw up immediately. " What the fuck!!!". Jung-Ri shouted. She had heard the commotion from her room and decided to see her so called sister-in-law to be being humiliated by her parents but seeing Carolyn's vomit made her regret her actions, she would have just stayed inside."Seolma, are you pregnant?". Jung-Jin asked in disbelief.

Carolyn didn't know what to say. She just stood like ice trying to recall the last time she saw her period. Oh no! Could she really be pregnant? This was a very bad timing. "Are you?". Jung-Sik took her hand and asked softly. "I think I am". Carolyn replied with excitement. "Don't you think you should get it checked before celebrating?" Jung-Ri asked sarcastically. "Yes that's right. Kyung get us a pregnancy stick". Jung-Ji asked the housemaid.

Kyung brought the stick and led Carolyn into the guest's bathroom to check it out. "Just sit down here and do the magic" Kyung said politely and waited at the door. "Ah!!!!! I am pregnant". Carolyn screamed. She couldn't believe it. " It shows two lines if you are pregnant doesn't it". She asked the maid. "Yes it does, but do you really want to get married into this family?". Kyung asked and looked at Carolyn with deep concern. " I understand you feel bad for me but they can't be that bad can they?".

Kyung decided not to reply Carolyn but let out a faint smile and led her to the parlour where she announced "Miss Carolyn is pregnant. Here's the stick". Kyung handed it over to Jung-Jin and resumed her duties. " She is pregnant. What do we do?" Jung-Jin asked her husband Jung-Su.

"What do you mean what do we do. My child is coming into this world, your grandchild is coming into this world and you ask what you would do?" Jung-Sik asked his mother. He couldn't understand how thoughtless these people were. "No no you don't understand Jung-Sik you are to marry Ji-Won. You use to like like her don't you?". Jung-Jin asked her son with desperation in her voice. On hearing the name Ji-Won, Carolyn had no choice than to ask "Who is Ji-Won".

Jung-Ri looked up and smiled. She has been waiting for this moment. She looked at her brother and discovered that he couldn't speak so she replied Carolyn instead "Oh you want to know. Well let me tell you. She was the first person he truly loved. She was the first person that made him feel like a man. She was...". "Enough!!! She was my ex-girlfriend but that is over now" Jung-Su said and took Carolyn's hand. Jung-Su who had been quiet, walked up to Carolyn and said "Congratulations, when are you planning to get married". Everyone's jaw dropped even the cooks and maids that had been listening. "Yeobo what are you doing" Jung-Jin asked her confusing husband. " Rest! Carolyn where are your parents" Jung-Su asked. "Um um.....".

Carolyn couldn't find the words to say. "They died in a plane crash father" Jung-Sik spoke up for his wife to be. He couldn't bear seeing her in pain."okay, you can get married after the child is born" Jung-Su said with a serious face. Jung-Sik wanted to oppose his father but he felt he had done too much today and if his father said this, there was probably hope for them. He quickly accepted and they all had dinner together that night.

Later that night, in the Emerald hotel, Carolyn couldn't stop thinking about what Kyung the maid said "do you really want to get married into this family?". She recalled Kyung's words. There has to be more to what Kyung said. She seemed scared and angry. "What are you thinking about". Jung-Sik asked Carolyn.

He had turned to embrace her while asleep but discovered that she was sitting up on the bed, deep in thought. "Nothing, I'll like to go to your house tomorrow". Carolyn said with a forced smile. She wanted to meet Kyung personallly and ask her about her little comment today. "Hm fine. Now let's sleep back". Jung-Sik said to her, then her gestured her to lie down and they cuddled to sleep.

At the Jung's home, in the Masters bedroom, Jung-Jin was pacing back and forth. "sogdodeul meomchuda (Stop pacing)". Jung-Su said to his wife. "What do you mean I should stop pacing? You just accepted that girl into our home. What about harabeoji. This was the same reason he kicked your brother out of the family. I am quite certain that right now in his grave her is raging. He had always intended for our son to get married to Ji-Won...". "That's enough. Where is Jung-Hyun coming back?". Jung-Su asked after interrupting his wife and her rantings.

"Why would you ask me....". Knock!Knock!. The knock interrupted Jung-Jin this time. "Abeoji, Eeomoni I'm back, Can I come in?". Jung-Hyun, Jung-Su's second son asked. "Yes come in quickly". Jung-Su replied from the room.

"Abeoji, I heard hyeong came home with a black American". Jung-Hyung chuckled. His father had always favoured his older brother over him. He had sent his older brother abroad to study as the heir of the Emerald's group while he was left here to manage it waiting for his brother's return. He had also called earlier today while at the company but Mr. Kim, Jung-Su's assistant picked up the phone and informed him about the whole thing. He couldn't help imagining the disappointment on his father's face.

"Yes, and she is pregnant". Jung-Jin said without thinking. No! No! This really got Jung-Hyun upset because if his parents agreed to this it meant he didn't have a chance anymore. Jung-Sik already had an heir. Even if anything happens to Jung-Sik he stands no chance anymore." How sure are you that it is his child. Why don't we wait for the baby to arrive before they get married?". Jung-Hyun suggested. "That's what your father said, but shouldn't you guys be thinking of a way to get rid of her?". Jung-Jin asked in desperation. She really liked Ji-Won and thought haven't spent enough time with Carolyn, hated Carolyn. "My wife is so evil,Jung-Hyun, you can go to your room". Jung-Su said after a demonic laughter.

The next morning, Carolyn came alone to the Jung's family house, and thank goodness she saw Kyung cleaning. "Excuse me, Kyung". She said and tapped Kyung's shoulder. "What are you doing here?". Kyung said in shock and began to move away. "Wait". Carolyn grabbed her hand but then she saw a fresh wound on Kyung's hand and other scars. "Who did this to you?". She asked her with a shaky voice. "Ermmm I....". Kyung didn't know how to reply. "Carolyn, that is none of your business". Jung-Jin yelled from behind.

"But she is seriously injured. It's like a fire accident keeps reoccurring". Carolyn kept talking. "Madam it's nothing, i'll go now". Kyung nervously replied and ran to the kitchen. "You have some guts don't you? Anyways since you are here let's have coffee". Jung-Jin suggested to her future daughter in-law.

"Sorry madam I have to leave, I have other things to attend to" Carolyn answered in a pissed tone. Jung-Jin noticed and said "You are not angry at me. Are you? No-one talks to me like that". She yelled but then remembered her husband's remark last night.

She thought to herself "no need to get upset over this fool. When she gives birth to that bastard, they both will face my wrath". "Fine go, take care of yourself and your baby". Jung-Jin said with a broad smile and left. Carolyn finally understood what Kyung meant but she made up her mind that no-one would ever bully her in this home and decided not to tell Jung-Sik about this.
