Chapter 1: The Bite

---

The forest always felt alive to Caleb Winter. Every rustle of leaves, every chirp of a bird, and every whisper of the wind told a story. That evening, under the rising moon, the forest was different—eerie, as though it were holding its breath. Caleb clutched his camera tightly, his fingers trembling slightly, though he couldn't tell if it was from excitement or unease.

He had ventured farther than usual, chasing the perfect shot of the setting sun as it filtered through the dense canopy. His parents hated when he came out here alone, warning him of wild animals or worse—the stories locals whispered about the forest at night. But Caleb never listened. The forest was his sanctuary.

Tonight, though, something was off.

---

A Strange Encounter

The first sign was the silence. The birds stopped chirping. Even the wind seemed to retreat, leaving the air thick and heavy. Caleb froze mid-step, the hair on the back of his neck standing on end.

A low growl rumbled from the shadows ahead.

He squinted, his heart pounding. At first, it looked like just another wolf, but as it stepped into the dim light, Caleb's breath caught. The creature was massive, its fur a mix of silver and black, and its eyes glowed an unnatural gold.

"Easy..." Caleb whispered, backing up slowly.

The wolf didn't respond. Instead, it lunged.

Caleb barely had time to scream. The beast was on him in an instant, its teeth sinking into his shoulder. The pain was blinding, a white-hot fire searing through his veins. He struggled, kicking and punching, but it was like fighting a steel wall.

Then, just as quickly as it had attacked, the wolf stopped. It locked eyes with him, as if memorizing his face, then vanished into the trees, leaving Caleb bleeding and gasping on the forest floor.

The Morning After

Caleb woke in his bed, his clothes shredded and his shoulder bandaged. He had no memory of how he'd gotten home. His mom hovered nearby, her face pale.

"You were gone all night!" she scolded, though her voice was shaky with relief. "What happened?"

"I... I don't know," Caleb lied. The memory of the wolf's glowing eyes and the pain of its bite were too vivid, but how could he explain it? "I must've tripped and hit my head."

That seemed to satisfy her for now, though Caleb noticed the way she glanced nervously at his bandaged shoulder.

The Changes Begin

The first sign came later that day. Caleb was in his backyard, staring at the trees, when he noticed something odd. He could hear... everything. Birds chirping half a mile away. A squirrel scurrying up a tree. His neighbor arguing with his wife inside their house.

His senses were sharper, almost overwhelming. When he closed his eyes, he could even smell the rich earth, the faint scent of rain in the distance, and something metallic—blood.

By the third day, Caleb's appetite was insatiable. He devoured everything in sight, yet his body felt leaner, stronger. His reflexes were faster too. When he tripped in the hallway, he twisted mid-air and landed on his feet, leaving his classmates gaping.

"What's with you lately?" his best friend Jake asked as they walked to class.

"Nothing. Just... sleeping better, I guess."

But Caleb knew it wasn't nothing. He was changing, and it scared him.

The First Transformation

It wasn't until the next full moon that Caleb truly understood what had happened to him.

He was out in the backyard again, trying to clear his head, when the pain hit. It started in his chest, a deep, bone-deep ache that spread to his limbs. He dropped to his knees, gasping as his muscles contorted and bones shifted.

His vision blurred, then sharpened, and suddenly he was looking at the world through new eyes. Everything was brighter, more vibrant. He could see every blade of grass, every insect crawling across the dirt.

He looked down at his hands—or what used to be his hands. They were now large, clawed paws.

"No... no, no, no!" Caleb growled, his voice deep and guttural.

When the transformation ended, he was left shaking and terrified. He was a werewolf.

Cliffhanger Ending

As Caleb stumbled back into his room, still trembling from the transformation, his phone buzzed. A text from an unknown number lit up the screen:

"I know what you are. Meet me at the old church. Midnight."
