Chapter 7: Shadows of the Past
---
The voice in Caleb's mind lingered for days, growing louder and more insistent. It wasn't Fenris—that much was clear. This was something... older.
As the group tried to return to normalcy, Caleb began to experience strange visions—flashes of unfamiliar faces, ancient symbols, and a desolate wasteland cloaked in perpetual twilight.
One morning, he woke with a start, his hands trembling. On his palm was a faint imprint of a crescent moon—a mark that hadn't been there the night before.
"What's happening to me?" Caleb muttered, his voice shaky.
---
The Warning
Later that day, Caleb met with the group at their usual training spot. He showed them the mark, his unease clear.
Sophia studied it, her expression thoughtful. "It looks... familiar. Like something I've seen in one of my mother's old books."
"Great," Ryan said, throwing his hands up. "We just beat Fenris, and now you've got some cursed moon tattoo? What's next?"
Marcus, who had been unusually quiet, stepped forward. "This isn't just any mark," he said grimly. "It's a summons. And if I'm right, it's not something you can ignore."
"A summons?" Caleb asked.
Marcus nodded. "From the Shadow Court."
The air seemed to grow colder at the name.
"What's the Shadow Court?" Elena asked, her voice trembling slightly.
"They're an ancient council," Marcus explained. "Not werewolves, not witches—something in between. They've existed for centuries, watching over supernatural balance. But they're ruthless, and their methods... aren't exactly friendly."
"And why would they summon me?" Caleb asked.
Marcus sighed. "Because you're an Alpha now. And they're not happy about it."
---
The Journey Begins
The mark began to burn as night fell, compelling Caleb to follow its pull. Despite Marcus's warnings, the group refused to let Caleb go alone. Together, they ventured deep into the forest, their destination unknown.
The further they traveled, the stranger the world became. The trees twisted unnaturally, their branches clawing at the sky. Shadows seemed to move of their own accord, whispering unintelligibly.
Finally, they arrived at a clearing bathed in eerie silver light. At its center stood a circle of ancient stone pillars, each etched with glowing runes.
"This is it," Marcus said, his voice low.
As Caleb stepped forward, the mark on his palm flared, and the air around them shimmered. Figures began to materialize—tall, cloaked beings with glowing eyes and voices that resonated like thunder.
"Caleb of the Blackwood lineage," one of them intoned. "You stand before the Shadow Court. Explain yourself."
---
A Trial of Fire
The Shadow Court accused Caleb of disrupting the natural balance by becoming an Alpha under mysterious circumstances. They claimed his existence threatened to unravel the fragile harmony between supernatural factions.
"You don't even know the source of your power," one of the figures said. "How can you control what you do not understand?"
Caleb clenched his fists. "I didn't ask for this! But I won't run from it either. If I have to fight for my place, I will."
The court seemed unimpressed. "Very well. Prove yourself."
The ground beneath Caleb's feet began to tremble. A shadowy figure emerged from the darkness, its form shifting and twisting. It had no face, only a gaping void where its head should have been.
"This is your test," the court said. "Survive, and we may reconsider your fate."
---
A Team Effort
The shadow creature lunged at Caleb with inhuman speed, forcing him to transform immediately. He barely dodged its first strike, its claws leaving deep gouges in the earth.
"Not fair!" Ryan shouted, hurling a fireball at the creature. The flames struck, but instead of burning, they were absorbed into its body.
"It feeds on energy!" Sophia shouted. "We need a different approach!"
Elena closed her eyes, reaching out with her telepathy. "It's not just a creature—it's a construct! It's being controlled by the Court!"
"Then let's take control back," Caleb said, his voice steady. "Sophia, can you trap it with your shadows?"
"I can try," she said, focusing her power. Tendrils of darkness snaked toward the creature, wrapping around its limbs. It thrashed violently but couldn't break free.
"Elena, can you disrupt its connection to the Court?" Caleb asked.
Elena nodded, her brow furrowing as she concentrated. The creature shuddered, its movements growing sluggish.
"Now, Caleb!" Marcus shouted.
With a roar, Caleb lunged, his claws slashing through the creature's core. It let out a piercing scream before dissolving into nothingness.
---
The Verdict
The Court watched in silence as the creature vanished. Finally, one of them spoke.
"You have shown strength and resourcefulness, Caleb Blackwood. But your journey is far from over. There are forces at play that even we cannot see. Prepare yourself, for darker days lie ahead."
The mark on Caleb's palm faded, and the Court disappeared, leaving the group alone in the clearing.
"What now?" Ryan asked, his voice tinged with exhaustion.
Caleb looked at his friends, a newfound determination in his eyes. "Now, we get ready. Whatever's coming, we face it together."

Next Enemy Arc: The Phantom Reapers
As they return to campus, Caleb and his friends begin to notice strange occurrences: people disappearing, shadows lingering too long, and whispers of a group called the Phantom Reapers. A new battle is about to begin.
