Chapter 3: The Awakening of Allies
---
The morning after the fight at the church, Caleb awoke with a mixture of exhaustion and clarity. His body ached from the transformation, but his mind was sharper than ever. His senses were still heightened, picking up faint sounds and smells from beyond his room. Marcus's words from the night before echoed in his mind:
"Figure out who your friends are—because you're going to need them."
But Caleb wasn't sure who to trust. The quiet life he'd known was over, and the idea of sharing his secret terrified him. Yet, part of him knew he couldn't do this alone.

Campus Connections
Later that day, Caleb made his way to Riverview College, where classes were already in full swing. The campus buzzed with life, but Caleb couldn't shake the feeling that he didn't belong anymore. He kept his head low, avoiding the crowds, until someone called out to him.
"Caleb!"
Turning, he saw Ryan Blake jogging toward him. Ryan was his roommate and one of the few people who could pull Caleb out of his shell. With his wild red hair, easy grin, and endless energy, Ryan was the kind of guy who made friends with everyone.
"Dude, you okay? You've been acting weird lately," Ryan said, falling into step beside Caleb.
"I'm fine," Caleb replied quickly. Too quickly.
Ryan raised an eyebrow. "Sure you are. Anyway, we've got physics in five minutes, and if you're late, Dr. Gibson will eat you alive. Let's go."
As they walked, Caleb caught sight of a girl sitting alone under a tree. She had long, dark hair and a faraway look in her eyes, as though she were lost in another world. Something about her tugged at Caleb's attention.
"Who's that?" he asked.
Ryan glanced over. "Her? That's Elena Hart. She's... different. Quiet, keeps to herself. Rumor has it she transferred here after some big family drama. Why?"
"No reason," Caleb muttered, though he couldn't shake the feeling that Elena was important somehow.

The First Spark
That evening, Caleb found himself drawn to the library. He told himself it was to research werewolves, but deep down, he just needed a distraction. As he browsed the shelves, he heard a soft voice behind him.
"Looking for something?"
He turned to find Elena standing there, her dark eyes studying him intently.
"Uh, yeah," Caleb stammered. "Just... researching something for class."
Elena tilted her head, a faint smile playing on her lips. "You're lying."
Caleb froze. How could she know?
Before he could respond, Elena leaned closer. "I'm good at reading people," she said softly. "It's a... gift."
Caleb felt a chill run down his spine. "What kind of gift?"
She hesitated, then sighed. "You wouldn't believe me if I told you."
"Try me," Caleb said, surprising himself.
Elena hesitated again, then said, "I can hear thoughts. Not all the time, but when someone's emotions are strong, their thoughts kind of... leak out. Like yours are now."
Caleb stared at her, his mind racing. She was telling the truth—he could feel it.
"You're not the only one with secrets," she added, her voice barely above a whisper.

A New Bond
Over the next few days, Caleb and Elena began spending more time together. Though cautious at first, Caleb found himself drawn to her honesty and quiet strength. In turn, Elena seemed intrigued by Caleb's reluctance to open up, as if sensing there was more to him than he let on.
One evening, as they sat by the lake on campus, Caleb finally decided to tell her the truth.
"There's something I need to say," he began, his voice tense.
Elena looked at him, waiting patiently.
"I'm... not normal," Caleb said. "Something happened to me, and now I'm... different."
Elena didn't flinch. Instead, she reached out and placed a hand on his. "I know," she said simply. "I've felt it since the moment we met."
"You don't think I'm crazy?" Caleb asked, stunned.
"No," she said with a small smile. "I think you're brave."

The Team Expands
As Caleb and Elena grew closer, their world began to change.
One night, while Caleb was walking back to his dorm, he smelled smoke. Following the scent, he found Ryan standing in an empty courtyard, his hands engulfed in flames.
"What the—" Caleb began, but Ryan cut him off.
"It's not what it looks like!" Ryan said, quickly extinguishing the fire. "I mean, okay, it is what it looks like, but I swear, I'm not dangerous."
Caleb stared at him, then burst out laughing. "You're kidding, right? I thought I was the only freak around here."
Ryan frowned. "What do you mean?"
"I'll explain if you do," Caleb said.
The two sat down, and for the first time, Caleb shared his story. In turn, Ryan revealed that he'd been able to manipulate fire since he was a kid but had always been terrified of losing control.
"Guess we're in this together now," Ryan said with a grin.
By the end of the week, their group had grown to include Sophia Grace, a quiet art student who could manipulate shadows, and Liam Cross, a pre-med major with the ability to heal wounds with a touch.

A Common Enemy
As the group bonded, strange occurrences began happening around campus. Students went missing, reports of strange creatures spread, and Caleb's instincts told him it was connected to the rogue Alpha.
One evening, Marcus appeared at Caleb's dorm, his expression grim.
"It's time," he said. "The rogue is gathering an army. If we don't stop him, your town—and your friends—won't survive."
Caleb looked at his newfound allies, their faces reflecting the same mix of fear and determination he felt.
"Then we fight," Caleb said. "Together."
