Chapter 13 - Chapter 13: The Evidence Points

The office was usually a place filled with the hustle and bustle of work, but on this particular day, an air of unease and tension hung heavily over it. Blake sat in his spacious and elegantly furnished office, his eyes fixed on the stack of papers and digital files that had been presented to him as "evidence" against Selene. The sunlight streaming through the large windows seemed almost out of place, as if it didn't belong in this somber atmosphere.

The documents were neatly arranged on his desk, yet they felt like a chaotic mess in his mind. There were the forged emails that appeared to show detailed exchanges between Selene and an unknown entity, discussing aspects of the new product that were meant to be kept strictly confidential. The wording was carefully crafted to mimic her style, making it all the more convincing at first glance. Alongside the emails were the fabricated file access records, indicating that she had supposedly been delving into restricted areas of the company's internal system at odd hours.

Blake's expression was one of shock and deep confusion. His brows were furrowed tightly, forming a crease in the middle of his forehead as he tried to make sense of what he was seeing. His mind was racing with a thousand thoughts. How could Selene, the woman he had come to know and admire for her creativity and integrity, be involved in something like this? But the evidence was right there, staring him in the face, and it was difficult to simply dismiss it.

He picked up one of the printed emails, his eyes scanning the lines again and again, looking for any signs of it being a fake. But the forgers had been meticulous, and there were no obvious flaws that he could detect immediately. He then turned to the digital records of the file accesses, clicking through the files on his computer screen, hoping to find some discrepancy that would prove it was all a setup.

Meanwhile, outside in the company's common areas, the rumors were spreading like wildfire. In the break room, a group of employees had gathered around the coffee machine, their voices lowered but filled with speculation.

"I can't believe Selene would do such a thing," one employee said, shaking their head in disbelief. "She always seemed so nice and dedicated to her work."

Another chimed in, "Well, you never really know what people are capable of when there's something to gain. Maybe she was tempted by an offer from a competitor or something."

A third employee added, "I just hope this doesn't affect the progress of the advertising project. We've all put so much work into it."

The gossip continued to circulate, and the once-friendly glances that people used to give Selene were now replaced with looks of suspicion and wariness. Some colleagues even avoided her when they passed by in the corridors, not knowing what to say or how to act around her.

Selene, completely unaware of the growing storm of rumors and the evidence that was being used against her, was in her own workstation, focused on finalizing some details of the advertising plan. She was poring over the visual designs, making notes on how to enhance the impact of certain elements, her mind fully immersed in her work.

It wasn't until later in the day when she noticed that the usual friendly chatter around her had died down and people seemed to be giving her a wide berth that she started to sense something was wrong. She looked around, a bit puzzled by the strange behavior of her colleagues, but didn't think too much of it at first.

However, when she went to a meeting with some of the team members and noticed the awkward silence and the furtive glances they were giving her, she couldn't ignore it any longer. She pulled aside one of her closer colleagues and asked, "Is something going on? Everyone seems really off around me today."

The colleague hesitated for a moment, clearly reluctant to be the one to break the news. But seeing the concern in Selene's eyes, they finally said, "Selene, there are rumors going around that you might have leaked company secrets. I don't believe it, of course, but that's what people are saying."

Selene's face went pale in an instant. She felt as if the ground had been pulled out from under her feet. "What? That's impossible! I would never do such a thing," she exclaimed, her voice shaking with a mixture of shock and disbelief.

She immediately thought of Blake. What must he think of her now? She knew that if these rumors had reached her colleagues, they must have surely reached him as well. She decided to go to his office and clear things up right away.

She walked down the corridor towards Blake's office, her heart pounding in her chest. With each step, her anxiety grew. When she finally reached the door, she took a deep breath and knocked softly.

"Come in," Blake's voice sounded from inside, and Selene pushed the door open. She saw him sitting at his desk, the evidence still spread out in front of him. His face was solemn, and his eyes met hers with a look that was a mixture of disappointment and confusion.

Selene's eyes welled up with tears as she looked at him. "Mr. Lu, I... I just heard about these rumors. They're not true. I don't know where this is coming from, but I swear I've never leaked any company secrets," she said, her voice choked with emotion.

Blake stared at her for a long moment, his internal struggle evident on his face. Part of him wanted to believe her immediately, to trust in the Selene he thought he knew. But the evidence was so damning, and as the head of the company, he had a responsibility to safeguard its interests.

He finally spoke, his voice sounding a bit strained. "Selene, I want to believe you, but this evidence... it's hard to ignore. I need you to explain how these things could have happened. How did your email end up in these exchanges? And why does it show you accessing restricted files?"

Selene felt a lump in her throat as she tried to find the words to defend herself. "I don't know, Mr. Lu. I've never seen these emails before, and I've never accessed any files I wasn't supposed to. Someone must be trying to frame me. Please, you have to believe me," she pleaded, tears streaming down her face.

The atmosphere in the office was thick with emotion and tension. Blake was caught in a difficult position. He cared about Selene deeply, but he couldn't just brush aside the evidence without a proper investigation. On the other hand, seeing her so distraught and hearing the sincerity in her voice made him question whether there was more to this than met the eye.

As they stood there, facing each other in this moment of crisis, the future of their relationship and Selene's reputation within the company hung in the balance. The rumors continued to swirl outside, and the weight of the false evidence seemed to grow heavier with each passing minute. Both of them knew that they needed to find a way to uncover the truth, but the path ahead was filled with uncertainty and challenges.

The rest of the company was still abuzz with speculation. In the different departments, people were discussing the situation during their breaks or while working on tasks, unable to focus fully on their work as the drama unfolded. Some were waiting to see how Blake would handle it, while others were already passing judgment on Selene without knowing the full story.

The situation was a complex web of emotions, suspicions, and the need to get to the bottom of what was clearly a malicious plot. And as the day wore on, the pressure on both Selene and Blake only increased, pushing them to find answers and clear Selene's name before it was too late.
