Chapter 14 - Chapter 14: Selene's Explanation

The atmosphere in Blake's office was suffocatingly tense. Selene stood there, her body trembling slightly, tears streaming down her face like a broken string of pearls. She looked at Blake with a mixture of desperation and hope, praying that he would believe her despite the damning evidence laid out before them.

Blake sat behind his imposing desk, his usually confident and composed demeanor now replaced with a visible turmoil. His eyes were fixed on Selene, a complex blend of emotions swirling within them - there was a part of him that wanted to reach out and comfort her, yet the weight of the evidence and his responsibility to the company held him back, making him maintain a certain distance both physically and emotionally.

Selene took a deep, shuddering breath, trying to steady herself as much as possible before speaking. Her voice was choked with sobs, but she forced herself to begin explaining, her words tumbling out in a rush as if she was afraid that if she didn't speak fast enough, she would lose the chance to clear her name.

"Mr. Lu, I... I really don't know where all this is coming from," she said, her hands clenching and unclenching nervously at her sides. "I've been nothing but dedicated to this project and to the company since the day I started working here. I would never, ever do something as despicable as leaking company secrets."

She took a step forward, her eyes pleading with him to understand. "Those emails... I've never seen them before in my life. I don't know who could have fabricated them, but it definitely wasn't me. They must have somehow gotten hold of my email address and used it to create this false appearance of me being involved in something so wrong."

Blake's expression remained solemn as he listened intently. He nodded slightly, indicating that he was hearing her out, but his mind was still grappling with the contradictions between what he felt for her and the seemingly solid evidence in front of him.

Selene continued, her voice growing a bit stronger as she tried to make her case. "And as for the records of accessing restricted files, that's completely absurd. I've always followed the company's protocols and never once tried to go beyond what I was authorized to do. I'm always so careful with my work, especially when it comes to sensitive information like that."

She wiped away the tears from her cheeks with the back of her hand, her eyes still locked on Blake's. "You know me, Mr. Lu. You've seen how hard I've worked on the advertising project, how much I care about making it a success. Why would I risk everything I've built here and my reputation just to leak secrets? It doesn't make any sense."

Blake finally spoke, his voice low and filled with a sense of conflict. "Selene, I understand what you're saying, and a part of me wants to believe you wholeheartedly. But this evidence... it's not easy to just dismiss. It's been presented in a way that seems very convincing."

He picked up one of the printed emails again, as if hoping to find something different upon a second look. "The details in these emails, the way they mimic your writing style... it's all too elaborate to be a simple prank. And the file access records have timestamps and everything, making it look like it's all legitimate."

Selene felt a pang of helplessness wash over her. She knew that the forgers had been extremely cunning, leaving no obvious loopholes that could be easily spotted. "But Mr. Lu, that's exactly what makes it a setup. Whoever is behind this has gone to great lengths to make it look real. They must have studied my communication patterns, my work habits, just to make me look guilty."

She took another step forward, now standing closer to his desk. "Please, you have to trust me. I have nothing to hide. I'll do whatever it takes to prove my innocence. You can check my computer, my work history, anything. There won't be a single shred of evidence that supports these false accusations because they're just that - false."

Blake ran a hand through his hair in frustration. He was truly in a bind. His feelings for Selene were genuine, and he had witnessed her passion and integrity firsthand during the advertising project. But as the head of the company, he couldn't let personal emotions cloud his judgment when it came to safeguarding the company's interests.

He looked up at her, his eyes meeting hers directly. "Selene, I can't just ignore this. I have to investigate further. But I promise you, I'll try to get to the bottom of this as quickly as possible and find out the truth."

Selene nodded, a glimmer of hope still shining in her teary eyes. "Thank you, Mr. Lu. I know you're in a difficult position too. I just hope that the truth will come out soon and that this nightmare will end."

However, even as they spoke, the rumors outside the office were spreading like wildfire. In the company cafeteria, employees were gathered in small groups, whispering among themselves.

"Did you hear? Selene is in Mr. Lu's office right now, trying to explain herself. But I don't know if it'll do any good with all that evidence against her," one employee said with a skeptical look on their face.

Another replied, "I still can't believe she would do such a thing. She always seemed so nice and professional. But you never really know people, I guess."

The gossip was reaching every corner of the company, and the stares and whispers that Selene had been receiving were only getting worse. Some colleagues were openly avoiding her, as if being associated with her would somehow taint their own reputations.

Back in the office, Blake was deep in thought, trying to figure out where to start the investigation. He knew he couldn't rely solely on his feelings for Selene; he needed solid proof to either clear her name or confirm the accusations. He decided to call in his most trusted assistant, someone who was experienced in handling internal investigations and had a sharp eye for details.

He picked up the phone and dialed the assistant's number. "Come to my office immediately," he said in a serious tone. "We have a situation that requires a thorough investigation."

When the assistant arrived, Blake briefed them on the situation, showing them the evidence that had been presented against Selene. The assistant listened carefully, taking notes and asking questions to clarify certain points.

"We need to start by looking into the origin of these emails," the assistant said. "Check the IP addresses they were sent from, see if there are any traces that lead back to someone with a motive to frame Selene. And as for the file access records, we'll need to verify if there were any glitches in our system or if it was indeed an unauthorized access."

Blake nodded in agreement. "I want you to work quickly but also be thorough. This is a serious matter, and we can't afford to make any mistakes."

As the assistant left to begin the investigation, Selene felt a bit of relief knowing that steps were being taken to find the truth. But she also knew that until the real culprit was found and her name was completely cleared, she would still be under a cloud of suspicion.

She looked at Blake, her eyes filled with a mixture of gratitude and worry. "Thank you for taking this seriously, Mr. Lu. I'll cooperate fully with the investigation. I just hope that everything will turn out okay in the end."

Blake gave her a reassuring look, although he himself was still uncertain about how things would unfold. "We'll get through this, Selene. Just have faith that the truth will prevail."

The two of them were now in a difficult and uncertain situation, with their relationship on the line and Selene's professional reputation hanging in the balance. The road ahead was filled with challenges, but they both knew that they had to keep moving forward and fight to uncover the truth behind this malicious plot.
