Chapter 15 - Chapter 15: The Preliminary Investigation

The weight of the situation hung heavy in the air as Blake and Selene faced the daunting task of uncovering the truth behind the false accusations. Blake's office, which usually exuded an air of authority and professionalism, now seemed to be filled with a sense of urgency and determination.

Blake sat at his desk, his mind racing with thoughts on how to approach the investigation. He knew that every step had to be meticulous, as the reputation of the company and Selene's future were at stake. He called in his most trusted assistant, Harry, a sharp-witted and experienced professional who had a knack for delving into complex matters and getting to the bottom of things.

Harry arrived promptly, his expression serious and focused. "Mr. Lu, I've been briefed on the situation. I understand the gravity of it," he said as he took a seat across from Blake.

Blake nodded and gestured towards the evidence laid out on the desk. "These are the so-called pieces of evidence against Selene. We need to find out who's behind this, and more importantly, prove that it's all a setup."

Harry picked up the stack of papers and began examining them carefully. "First things first, we should look into the origin of these emails. The IP addresses might give us a clue as to who sent them. I'll work with our IT department to trace them back," he said, jotting down some notes on his pad.

He then turned his attention to the fabricated file access records. "As for these, we'll need to check our internal system logs thoroughly. There could be signs of unauthorized access or any anomalies that might indicate tampering."

Selene, who had been standing to the side, listening intently, spoke up. "I'm willing to do whatever it takes to help. My computer and all my work records are available for you to check. I have nothing to hide," she said, her voice still carrying a hint of the distress from the earlier confrontation.

Harry looked at her and gave her a reassuring nod. "That's helpful, Selene. We'll definitely need your cooperation. If you can think of anyone who might have a motive to frame you, that would also be valuable information."

Selene thought for a moment and then said, "I've been so focused on the advertising project that I haven't really made any enemies within the company. But I know that Mr. Lu has competitors in the business world. Maybe they saw our growing relationship and thought they could use me to target him."

Blake's eyes narrowed at the mention of his competitors. He knew that in the cutthroat business arena, such underhanded tactics were not uncommon. "It's very likely. We'll need to look into our competitors' recent activities as well. See if there are any signs that they've been involved in something like this."

With a plan in place, Harry got to work immediately. He headed to the IT department, where he met with the team of technicians. They began the painstaking process of tracing the IP addresses of the suspicious emails. The technicians were hunched over their computer screens, typing in commands and analyzing the data that came up.

One of them said, "This isn't going to be easy. Whoever sent these emails seems to have used some sophisticated methods to hide their tracks. But we'll keep digging."

Harry encouraged them, "We have to find something. There's no other option. This is too important."

Meanwhile, Selene was back at her workstation, going through her own files and records with a fine-tooth comb. She was looking for anything that might help prove her innocence. She remembered every detail of her work on the advertising project, and she was determined to show that she had been focused solely on its success and had never had any dealings with anything related to leaking secrets.

She opened up her work emails, searching for any signs of unusual activity. She scrolled through the messages, checking the senders and the timestamps, even though she knew deep down that she hadn't been involved in anything improper.

In another part of the office, Blake was also taking matters into his own hands. He started reaching out to some of his contacts in the business world, asking them discreetly if they had heard anything about his competitors' recent maneuvers. He knew that in their circle, rumors and whispers often held a grain of truth.

One of his old business associates replied, "I haven't heard anything specific, but I know that some of your rivals have been looking for ways to undermine you. They're always watching your every move. It wouldn't surprise me if they were behind something like this."

This only added to Blake's determination to get to the bottom of it. He was not going to let anyone get away with trying to ruin Selene's reputation and disrupt his company's operations.

Back in the IT department, after hours of painstaking work, the technicians finally found a lead. "Harry, we've traced one of the IP addresses to an overseas server. It's been masked, but we think we can dig deeper and find out who's behind it," one of them said excitedly.

Harry's eyes lit up. "Good work. Keep at it. We need to know who's using that server to send these fake emails."

As the day wore on, the investigation continued. Selene had gathered all her work-related documents and brought them to Harry. "These are all my notes, drafts, and communications related to the project. I hope they can help in some way," she said.

Harry thanked her and began going through the papers. He was impressed by her thoroughness and dedication to the project. It made it even harder for him to believe that she could be involved in something as malicious as leaking secrets.

In the meantime, rumors were still swirling around the company. Some employees were speculating about whether Selene would be fired, while others were waiting to see how the investigation would turn out. The atmosphere in the office was tense, with everyone on edge.

However, Blake made it clear to the staff that no one should jump to conclusions before the investigation was complete. "We're looking into this matter thoroughly. Until we have solid evidence one way or another, we should give Selene the benefit of the doubt," he announced in a company-wide email.

This helped to ease the situation a little, but the underlying tension remained. Selene was grateful for Blake's support, but she knew that the only way to truly put an end to the rumors was to prove her innocence beyond a doubt.

As the investigation entered its second day, more clues started to surface. Harry discovered that there had been some unusual activity in the company's internal network around the time the fabricated file access records were supposed to have occurred. It seemed that someone had managed to bypass the security protocols briefly, but they had left behind some digital footprints that the IT team was now analyzing.

Selene, on the other hand, remembered a conversation she had with a client a few days before the accusations surfaced. The client had asked some rather strange questions about the advertising project, and now she wondered if it could be related to what was happening. She immediately informed Harry about it.

Harry said, "That's an interesting lead. We'll look into that client and see if there's any connection. It could be a crucial piece of the puzzle."

With each new discovery, they were getting closer to uncovering the truth. The team was working tirelessly, driven by the knowledge that they were fighting to clear Selene's name and expose the real culprit behind this malicious plot. The road ahead was still long and filled with uncertainties, but they were determined to see it through and bring the truth to light.
