I was surprised Nicolas bought the hospital I was working in, but I knew it was not a coincidence so I tried to approach him after his speech. He was occupied with other agendas, so I waited for him near his office. He passed by me with the other executives without saying a word, I went back to continue my daily routine.
"Babe, are you okay? You look angry"
"Owen I'm just having a bad day, I will be fine."
"There is code Red, let go and check what is happening."
There was a fire outbreak at the psychiatric department opposite ours so we treated the injured and closed for the day. Owen realized I was quiet throughout our journey home, so we stopped at a snuck shop to get some beers. He continuously kept asking if I was okay which irritated me so I shouted at him and went home. I knew it was not his fault I was in that mood, and he was worried about me.
We resumed work after a week because of the fire outbreak, I went to my office when I was told by the medical residents that the director called for me this morning. I wanted to do my morning rounds before I go see the director but the residents advised I should go, because of the structure of the new management.
"Doctor Jasmine, I hope you are fine. You have been reposted to the emergency ward. You starting there today."
"Director, I'm above working in the emergency ward. That was not what I signed for when I came here, I can't work in the emergency ward."
"Doctor Jasmine the order was from above so you need to obey unless you are ready to bring in your resignation letter."
My office was cleared up before I got back and Owen dragged me out of the hospital to ask what was happening. I knew he was lost and confused.
"Jasmine what is happening, you have been acting strange since the new management came and now you are being sent to the emergency ward. Did you do something wrong?"
"Owen why do you think it is my fault I'm being sent to the emergency ward, I'm not the one at fault."
"Jasmine I know you are rude sometimes, so maybe you offended someone at the top and the person is paying you back. Let me ask you, did you offend anyone?"
I slowly walked away from him crying. I thought he was on my side no matter the circumstance so why is he blaming me without asking what was going on? "Don't he trust me?" I heard the sound of the ambulances so I rushed to the emergency ward. I worked all night because of the accident downtown. The stress of standing the whole night was new to me since I hadn't been in the emergency ward since my internship years.
I was too tired to drive home so I called a taxi but saw Owen's car parked outside the hospital waiting for me. I pretended I didn't see the car because I was not ready to speak to him, he blew his car horn hard to the extent of getting the attention of everyone around so I had to go sit inside. The atmosphere in the car was very awkward till I got home.
"Jasmine can we please talk, I am sorry for all that I said today. I was to ask you why you were angry instead of asking if you were okay. I was supposed to ask why you were sent to the emergency ward instead of putting the fault on you."
I was moved by his sincere apology, his words just made my body forget the pain I went through the whole day. I took him inside and ordered food for dinner, we had a few drinks after eating so I knew it was the best time to tell him everything before he found out from the wrong person later.
"Owen I am sorry for shouting at you, I was not myself"
"Jasmine since the new management, you have been down. Help me understand what is going on."
"The president is my ex-husband and I'm very sure he was the one who decided for me to work in the emergency ward."
I told him the story about Nicolas and how his dad was a remodel to me. He felt sorry for me but he was smiling throughout the story.
"I am sorry you went through all that you went through, but I am not sorry because I wouldn't have met an angel like you. Jasmine if you got a hospital from his dad, why are you stressing yourself here?"
"Owen I don't want to be served, I want to serve. I'm still a young doctor who has a bright future. I don't want to sit in an office the whole day without doing anything and just signing papers. I want to be a doctor who sees their patient happy anytime they are healed, a doctor that can change the lives of people with a scalpel."
"So you are indirectly telling, me you will continue to work at the emergency ward. I can tell you are tired; let's take a warm bath together so I can massage you after."
It was a long night filled with memories and joy. We wished each other luck on a fresh day and went to our various posts. I knew it was another tough day with standing and meeting scary patients, I couldn't complain because I loved being a doctor. At a point within the day, I could not feel my legs, my vision became blurry, and the next thing I knew was landing on the ground.
