Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: A day in the life

I loved hiking. Feeling the breeze on my purple fur, heating the soothing sounds of local wildlife, it brought me peace as it was doing right now as I walked through north-wood forest.I went out here today because out of all the job application's I'd sent, not one had been accepted. I didn't want to tell Alastair, I knew it would make him anxious. Finally after I was nearing the end of my hike I entered my neighborhood. I'd say I lived in a pretty nice area here in my home state of South Carolina.Alastair wasn't home when I got back to my house. He was probably still at work. We had recently run into financial issues especially with the house since the rent kept increasing. These days he usually came home at around 9 at night. I wished I could do more to help us financially but no one wanted to hire a high school drop out.I usually tried to help out around the house by keeping everything tidy and making meals for us both. I was lucky Alastair had graduated college or else I'm sure we wouldn't have anything. It was very dull being home by myself but I've kind of gotten used to it by now. I sat on the couch and watched some horror movie, it was called "the shining" or something along those lines. As the sun set, I realized I should probably cook us two dinner even though I was terrible at it. I tried to look at tutorials online but ended up giving up and just heating up pre-heated pasta on the stove which I still fucked up on and burnt. God, I was such a useless person.I feel like I can't do anything useful. Honestly I'm surprised Alistair chose me instead of someone who could actually get a job like a normal personI was still waiting for Alastair to get home. It was 10 at night now. The pasta was getting cold at this point so I put all the leftovers in the fridge.I didn't really know what to do with myself after that so I just played candy crush on my iPad for a few hours. Finally at around 11 I heard the front door open and close and saw Alastair in the entry of the house. He was a timber wolf with most of his fur being a light tan color and his ears and tip of his tail being a dark brown."Oh, hey Jake, I didn't think you'd still be up at this time, I had to stay at work more then I thought today, a client had issues with the paperwork, I'm sorry for not telling you," he told me.He looked so tired. I realized while I'd sat on my ass all day not doing shit he was doing all the work. I felt terrible."You don't have to apologize, it's not your fault, I wish I could do more to help you, b-but no one w-wants to hire me, I feel like I havn't done anything useful,".I realized then that I was crying and tears were running down my cheeks."Hey, Jake, please don't cry. You're doing your best, that's all that matters to me," he said as he embraced me, his chin resting on my head. After I had calmed myself down I said "oh, I made pasta, it's in the fridge, sorry I kind of burnt it,""Nah, I'm ok, I'm just going to get ready for bed if that's okay with you, I had a long day at work." He said.I noddedAfter I wasted my time playing candy crush on my iPad for another twenty minutes or so, I went upstairs to get ready for bed. When I got to our room, I found Alastair already collapsed in bed.He must have been very tired. By the looks of the situation he had just pulled off his shirt and gone right to bed still in his work pants.I felt a pang of guilt. I was probably ruining his life. If he had someone who actually had a job unlike me, he wouldn't have to do this. I shakily sighed.I took a quick shower and then climbed into bed, falling asleep almost instantly
