"Ding-dong!"
The doorbell outside rang.
Xu Chunian was just about to stand up when Bai Hui pressed her down, saying, "Keep eating. I'll go."
Opening the door, Bai Hui was a bit surprised to see the visitor. "Huai Xu? Come in quickly."
"Mom, I've come to pick up Zhuzhu." Jiang Huaixu looked exhausted. He must have rushed back right after finishing handling things there.
"Zhuzhu is having dinner. You surely haven't eaten at this hour. We've just started too. Come in quickly." Bai Hui stepped aside to let him in.
As soon as Jiang Huaixu entered the house, he subconsciously looked towards the dining room. Xu Chunian was there too. She was being coquettish with Xu Zhen. The latter didn't seem to want to pay much attention to her, but his expression wasn't as tense as before. She would occasionally pick up food for Zhuzhu. Zhuzhu was an easy-going baby, eating whatever was given to her, with her little mouth all greasy.
The atmosphere was just right. On the contrary, he seemed like an outsider, not fitting in with them at all.
As if sensing something, Xu Chunian glanced towards the door. The man in a suit was exuding charm all over. In those cold eyes, when he saw her, the emotions revealed were so complicated that Xu Chunian couldn't quite understand them.
"Huai Xu?"
"Okay."
Bai Hui added a new set of chopsticks and a bowl. Xu Chunian scooped a bowl of hot soup for him.
"Warm your stomach up first before eating."
Everyone at the table was stunned for a moment.
Jiang Huaixu was the first to react. "Thank you."
Zhuzhu pushed her water glass in front of her father.
Jiang Huaixu patted her on the head.
After the meal, Xu Zhen and Bai Hui saw them off to the car.
Bai Hui put Zhuzhu in the child seat. "Huai Xu, next time you go on a business trip, just send Zhuzhu over here. You can feel more at ease outside."
"I got it."
"Be careful on the road." Bai Hui gave the reminder with concern.
"Okay. You and Dad go back and rest."
Xu Zhen didn't say anything but waved his hand, his gaze falling on Xu Chunian who was helping Zhuzhu fasten the seatbelt at the back.
Watching the car disappear into the night, Bai Hui sighed worriedly, "Tell me, what on earth does Niannian want to do this time?"
Xu Zhen shook his head. "It doesn't seem like she's pretending. Usually, she would always make a fuss when she comes back before she feels comfortable."
"Huai Xu is a good kid. You say, how could Niannian suddenly..."
"Forget it. As long as she doesn't follow that Qin Yuan anymore, let's not talk about her." Xu Zhen turned to look at her.
"For so long, who has been talking about her? It's all because you spoiled her. She's simply out of control." Bai Hui glared at him, then changed the topic. "But although Niannian was a bit任性 and naughty before, she wouldn't be this extreme."
"Who knows?" Xu Zhen turned and walked back. "I don't know if I'm getting old, but it seemed like I saw Niannian before she got married tonight."
Bai Hui paused in her steps. "You're right. It was like a dream."
"Zhuzhu is so good. She doesn't cry or make a fuss and can play by herself all afternoon." Xu Zhen's voice softened a bit. "This afternoon I took her to buy toys. She didn't want anything. She just took a box of Lego and wouldn't let me buy anything else."
"The more sensible she is, the more it makes me feel sorry for her." Bai Hui closed the door. "Niannian has been causing trouble all year. We've also had less contact with Zhuzhu. When you brought her back today, I was still a bit dazed. How could she have grown up so much already?"
"Tomorrow after work, I'll drop by to buy some toys for kids. Whenever Zhuzhu comes over, they'll all come in handy." Xu Zhen took off his coat.
Bai Hui didn't say anything for a while, with her eyebrows slightly furrowed. "I'm still not quite at ease. You contact Dr. Chu tomorrow."
"Okay."
