Chapter 18 - Troubled City

Over the course of a few days, Kaelen had gotten acquainted with the members of his family.

During that time, Kaelen made sure to take notes of everything that had happened in castle.

Apart from Velora whom he had a duel with. He also had a younger sister.

Nyra Nightshade, the third child of the Nightshade Dynasty.

Kaelen noticed that apart from the rest of his family, Nyra seemed to be a bit different from all of them. During the time in which they met, Kaelen found out that Nyra was an archer. A divine archer at that.

Though, she was his younger sister. She was incredibly talented with the use of her skill.

Kaelen had already gotten to know the behavioural traits of his family over the past few days.

Kaelen walked down the hallway to the Council Chamber. There was a meeting which was to be held between the nobles of Vaeloria.

On Vaeloria, there were three capital cities in which one of each of the three Monarchs ruled.

Solendris, which was the capital city of the first Monarch. Duskmire, the capital of the second Monarch. And lastly, Aurelthar the capital city of the third Monarch. This was the one in which Kaelen resides.

Each city is governed by the Monarchs, and therefore nobles are appointed to be the overseer of the city's welfare.

The Nightshade Dynasty was the overseer of security in Aurelthar. Which meant that Silver Nightshade was the commanding officer of security.

A meeting was to be held with other nobles to discuss the issue of security in Aurelthar.

You may wonder why Kaelen was invited. Being the only heir to the Nightshade Estate, it was neccessary for Kaelen to know the affairs of the kingdom if he was to take over someday.

On his way to the Council Chamber, Kaelen encountered a familiar face. It was the eldest daughter of the Nightshade Dynasty, Velora Nightshade.

Kaelen saw that she was headed in the same direction he was. He wondered if she was invited to the meeting. Well, it would make sense if she was. Being the eldest child of the Nightshade Dynasty. She was to understand the affairs of the nation, if she was ever to assist Kaelen in his rule.

After a few minutes of walking. The two made their way to the Council Chamber.

On getting there, Kaelen noticed that his father, mother and other nobles were already seated.

"You've finally arrived" Silver said with a hint of annoyance in his tone.

"Forgive me father, l was preoccupied with something else" Kaelen said in a firm tone.

Silver glanced at him but accepted his excuse.

When they were all seated the meeting commenced.

"Now, this meeting is to discuss the issue of security in Aurelthar. I've heard multiple issues of Void slayers making it through the city walls, guards have been disappearing lately." Kaelen spoke with a worried tone.

Kaelen could see his father's visible worried expression. The idea of Void Slayers making it through the city walls would be a devastating consequence. As it would cause widespread panic among the citizens.

Kaelen listened attentively to the conversation going on.

"Well, we do have limited resources. Our armies are depleting rapidly" a noble from the gathering stated.

"If we were to ask the other nations for assistance would it help?" Another noble stated yet again.

Kaelen didn't like the idea of crawling to another country for help. He believed that they should be able to carter and protect their own city.

"What is the cause for our guards number getting low" Kaelen spoke.

The whole room was silent for some moments before a noble spoke to answer.

"Well, we have two theories. One is that they are being smuggled out by other cities, as they have been cases where by slaves have been found in carriages of neighboring cities. The second one is that, Void Slayers may already be in our midst and is slowly trying to bring down our defense." The noble stated.

Kaelen considered the two theories which were mentioned as they were both reasonable to believe. Kaelen considered the fact that the other cities might want to wage war against them, but that would be barbaric as they would gain nothing from an all out war. The only thing that would be gain would be Death.

Kaelen considered the second option. Demonic entities may already be within the walls as they would slowly try to bring down the defense structure of the city.

Void Slayers have been around for decade. It would make sense if the were able to adapt and evolve into intelligent beings.

"How big is the walls of the city?" Kaelen asked.

"The walls stand at a height of 75 feet and are 15 feet thick. Watchtowers are placed 20 feet above the walls, giving defenders a clear vantage point over surrounding plains." His father spoke firm.

20 feet thick!! Kaelen had to agree that was a solid defense against the outside world.

Kaelen wondered how Void Slayers were able to get into the city with such a formidable defense stationed around it.

"Well, if that's the case. There shouldn't be any way possible for Void Slayers to enter neither should there be any guards missing.....what magical properties are imbued into the walls?" Kaelen asked, his hand rested on his jaw.

"Well...several spells are cast to prevent penetration. We have several spell casters in the city. The walls in covered head to toe with a magical outlay of defense." A noble spoke.

"Does that mean that is the surroundings barrier is broken the wall can be drilled through"? Kaelen asked with curiosity.

"Well...it wouldn't bpossible for the barrier to be broken...but technicall yes" a noble stated.

Kaelen thought about the possibility of the barrier already being broken. It wouldn't be impossible, considering that it's been more than a decade since we've heard any issue concerning Void Slayers. If they were back they certainly had a plan to infiltrate the city.

"Have you thought about the possibility of the barrier already being broken?"
