Death was a regular visitor of the Rivera prison, with it housing the most notorious of the criminals in the world. They were brilliant but ruthless, their souls so dark that Death himself came to escort them instead of his grim reapers.
When he came to escort Elana, he was shocked to see her. Death had been a little fascinated with Elana for a while now. The first time he saw her was when he came to take an elderly inmate and he noticed her crying and shivering sitting in a corner next to the corpse.
Her soul had shined so brightly it had stunned him for a moment. Her soul had the light of the moon, full of innocence and gentleness. He wondered how such a soul had ended up in such a place.
It had been decades since he had seen such a pure soul and finding her in one of the most hellish places on earth had intrigued him. He wondered how long her light would last in such a place.
He wanted to see how she would be tainted slowly and which sins would ultimately color her. He had seen her for 6 years but no matter what cruelty she suffered, her light never dimmed.
He was like a moth attracted to her light, always finding her and practically knew everything there was to know about his firefly.
He had wanted to get her out of this place but he was bound by the rules and couldn't interfere with her life directly. As he saw her suffer, her resilience had captivated him. He was bewitched by his little firefly and decided to have her for himself.
He had been patiently waiting for the right time when she would be released, he would woo her and make her his mate. He didn't know when it started but his fascination has turned to love and obsession.
When he came to escort her soul he had been shocked to see his firefly dimmed with red. The soul that should have been his was tearing itself apart in the flames of vengeance. They had not only killed her but hexed her soul so it would cease to exist and disappear forever.
He had been too late as he had been looking for Elana, not knowing it was her, he was to escort today and now not only was she dead but she was almost finished. He would never be able to have her now.
He roared as rage covered him and ran to save whatever fragments of her soul was left. His rage shook the entire country of Antonia. The once cold Death who never showed any bit of emotion now looked like a beast.
He himself never knew he could feel so intensely until he met her. The entire prison collapsed as the earth shook and numerous tragedies filled the country as he took her remnants in his arms gently.
He was usually the most reasonable among his siblings but Elana's end was just unacceptable to him. He was a God, how could he accept such an affront.
As the tragedies occurred, his siblings reached out to him. He was the eldest and they just couldn't believe what they were seeing. They tried to reason with Death to stop such horrific destruction as floods and earthquakes wrecked the entirety of Antonia.
Death had finally found his soulmate, his mate having been shrouded from him for eons. He hasn't recognized her but something in him has been pulled to her as if he knew her. Having given up on ever finding his soulmate, when he felt something for Elana he thought of making her his mate.
Now as she disappeared he desperately clung to her feeling the tether vanish inside his heart. He desperately begged his siblings Time and Fate to intervene and save her.
Fate looked at her devastated elder brother and felt some sympathy stirring inside her. The celestials were notorious for being unfeeling but when it came to their siblings, they were just like humans.
"You know even if we intervene there will be dire consequences for interfering with mortals." Fate reminded him.
"I don't care. If we don't do anything she will be gone forever and I will never find her again. They already kept her away from me for so long." he looked longing at Elana's disintegrating light.
"We will do as you say but her destiny is wrought with trials and with us interfering, the universe will only add more trials in her share." Time scratched his head lost in thought.
"I will protect her, let destiny do what she wants but no one will be able to harm my mate. I will go back as a human and accompany her through her trials till she can ascend and be by my side." Death declared.
The siblings looked at each other and granted Death's wish. The God of Endings became Elana's new start somehow.
