Chapter 57: The Eyes in the Dark
Ava's POV (continued)
I froze, my heart pounding in my chest. The glowing eyes seemed to be staring right through me, and I could feel a malevolent presence lurking just out of sight.
Kael's voice was low and urgent. "Ava, what's wrong?"
I tried to speak, but my voice caught in my throat. I nodded towards the eyes, and Kael's gaze followed mine.
His eyes narrowed, and he slowly got to his feet. "Stay behind me," he whispered, his hand on the hilt of his sword.
I nodded, my heart still racing. Kael took a step forward, his eyes fixed on the glowing eyes. The air seemed to vibrate with tension as the two of them faced off.
Suddenly, the eyes vanished, and the darkness seemed to swallow everything whole. Kael's sword flashed in the moonlight as he spun around, searching for any sign of movement.
I took a deep breath, trying to calm my racing heart. What had we just seen? And what did it want?
Kael's voice was low and urgent. "Ava, we need to get out of here. Now."
I nodded, and we quickly gathered our belongings. As we fled into the night, I couldn't shake the feeling that we were being herded towards some unknown fate.
The darkness seemed to press in around us, and I could feel eyes watching us from the shadows. We were being stalked, and I knew that we couldn't outrun our pursuers forever.
As we ran, the trees seemed to blur together, and the sound of our footsteps echoed through the forest. I stumbled, my foot catching on a hidden root. Kael caught me, his arm wrapping around my waist.
"Keep going," he whispered, his breath hot against my ear. "We're not safe yet."
I nodded, and we continued to run. But as we fled deeper into the forest, I couldn't shake the feeling that we were running straight into the heart of darkness.
The trees grew taller and closer together, casting long, ominous shadows on the ground. I stumbled again, and Kael caught me, his eyes scanning the surrounding area.
"What's wrong?" I whispered, my heart racing.
Kael's expression was grim. "I think we're being funneled towards something. Or someone."
I felt a chill run down my spine. What did Kael mean? And what lay ahead?
