Chapter 58: The Ambush
Kael's words sent a shiver down my spine. We were being funneled towards something, or someone. I didn't like the sound of that.
As we continued to run, the trees seemed to close in around us, casting long, ominous shadows on the ground. I stumbled again, and Kael caught me, his eyes scanning the surrounding area.
Suddenly, a figure stepped out of the shadows, blocking our path. Kael's sword flashed in the moonlight as he prepared to defend us.
But to my surprise, the figure didn't attack. Instead, it spoke in a low, gravelly voice.
"You're a hard pair to catch," it said, its eyes glinting with amusement. "But I've finally got you right where I want you."
Kael's eyes narrowed. "Who are you?" he demanded.
The figure chuckled. "My name is Grimgar," it said. "And I'm here to take you to my master."
I felt a chill run down my spine. Who was Grimgar's master? And what did they want with us?
Kael's sword flashed in the moonlight as he prepared to attack. But Grimgar was too quick. With a swift motion, he drew a dagger from his belt and flung it at Kael.
Kael dodged the dagger, but Grimgar was relentless. He drew another dagger and charged at Kael, his eyes blazing with fury.
I knew I had to act fast. With a swift motion, I drew my own dagger and flung it at Grimgar. But to my surprise, he dodged it easily and countered with a swift kick.
I cried out in pain as the kick connected with my stomach. I felt a wave of dizziness wash over me, and I stumbled backward, gasping for breath.
Kael's eyes widened in horror as he saw me fall. He rushed to my side, his sword flashing in the moonlight as he prepared to defend me.
But Grimgar was too powerful. He knocked Kael's sword aside and pinned him to the ground. I tried to struggle, but Grimgar's grip was like a vice.
As I looked up at Grimgar's twisted face, I knew we were doomed. We were at his mercy, and he would stop at nothing to take us to his master.
But I refused to give up. I thought of my unborn baby, and the life we were fighting for. I knew I had to protect them, no matter what.
With a surge of adrenaline, I struggled to free myself from Grimgar's grip. But he was too strong, and I felt myself being pulled away from Kael.
Kael's eyes locked onto mine, and I saw a fierce determination burning within them. He would not give up. He would fight to the death to save us.
And with that thought, I knew we would be okay. Kael would protect us, no matter what.
But as I looked down at my stomach, I saw a dark stain spreading across my clothes. I was bleeding. The kick had caused internal damage, and I could feel my life slipping away.
Kael's eyes widened in horror as he saw the blood. He struggled to free himself from Grimgar's grip, but it was too late. I felt myself being pulled away from him, away from our unborn baby's only chance at survival.
