Chereads / Beastsworn: The Awakening Pact / Chapter 15 - XV. The Wake of the Wilds

Chapter 15 - XV. The Wake of the Wilds

The air outside the cave was crisp and biting, a stark contrast to the oppressive heat of the Nexus chamber. The sun was low on the horizon, casting long shadows across the Wilds. Kael inhaled deeply, relief washing over him as he left the suffocating darkness behind.

But the relief was short-lived.

The ground trembled beneath their feet, a low rumble that seemed to echo from the very heart of the forest. Birds took flight in droves, their cries filling the air. Shadowfang growled, its ears flat against its head, while the phoenix ruffled its feathers uneasily.

"What's happening?" Kael asked, his voice tight.

Thane scanned the horizon, his expression grim. "We upset the balance. The Wilds are reacting. This isn't over."

Kael's gaze followed Thane's, and his heart sank. In the distance, the forest shifted unnaturally, the trees bending and twisting as though alive. A strange, unnatural mist crept through the underbrush, curling toward them like a living thing.

The Living Forest

They moved quickly, Thane leading the way through a narrow, winding path that twisted through the underbrush. The forest seemed alive with sound—creaking branches, rustling leaves, and an occasional low, guttural growl that sent chills down Kael's spine.

"What is this mist?" Kael asked, glancing over his shoulder as the swirling fog crept closer.

"Warden's Breath," Thane said without breaking stride. "It's the forest's way of purging intruders. It won't stop until it's reclaimed what was lost—or until we're dead."

Kael tightened his grip on the phoenix, its warm body a small comfort against the growing chill. "And how do we stop it?"

"We don't," Thane said grimly. "We outrun it."

The mist was relentless, curling through the trees and blanketing the ground. Shadowfang led the way, its instincts sharp as it weaved through the dense forest. But the mist was gaining, and Kael could feel its cold tendrils nipping at his heels.

"Thane!" Kael shouted. "It's too fast!"

Thane glanced back, his jaw tightening. "Keep moving! There's a clearing ahead. If we can make it to higher ground, we might have a chance."

---

A Glimmer of Hope

The clearing came into view—a rocky outcrop jutting from the forest floor. They scrambled up the incline, Kael's legs burning with effort. Shadowfang reached the top first, turning to bark urgently as the mist surged closer.

Kael reached the summit, gasping for breath. The phoenix took to the air, its flames brightening as it circled above. Thane was right behind him, his blade drawn as he scanned the mist below.

The forest was eerily silent now, the mist pooling at the base of the outcrop like a living sea. Kael watched in awe and horror as shapes began to form within the fog—twisting, shadowy figures that moved with unnatural grace.

"What are those?" Kael whispered.

Thane's face was pale. "Forest wraiths. Guardians of the Wilds. They've come for the crystal's energy."

The wraiths moved closer, their ethereal forms gliding through the mist. Their hollow eyes glowed faintly, and their whispering voices filled the air, an incomprehensible chorus that made Kael's skin crawl.

---

The Phoenix's Flame

One of the wraiths broke away from the group, its form solidifying as it ascended the outcrop. The phoenix let out a piercing cry, its flames flaring as it dove toward the creature. The wraith recoiled, but its shadowy form quickly reassembled.

"They can't be killed," Thane said, his voice taut. "Not by normal means."

Kael reached out through the bond, feeling the phoenix's determination and fear. He focused their energy, summoning a burst of golden fire that struck the wraith head-on. The creature shrieked, its form flickering and dissipating into the mist.

"Not normal means," Kael muttered. "But maybe this will work."

Thane nodded, his expression grim. "Keep them back. I'll figure out a way to drive them off for good."

Kael and the phoenix moved as one, their bond guiding each attack. Each burst of flame drove the wraiths back, but more kept coming, their whispering voices growing louder and more frantic.

Thane knelt by a cluster of rocks, his hands moving quickly as he arranged a series of runes carved into small stones. Shadowfang stood guard, snapping at any wraith that ventured too close.

"Hurry up!" Kael shouted, his energy waning as the phoenix grew weaker.

"Almost there," Thane said, his voice steady despite the chaos.

---

A Pyrrhic Victory

With a final burst of energy, Thane activated the runes. A brilliant light erupted from the stones, washing over the clearing in a wave of searing energy. The wraiths shrieked, their forms dissolving into the mist as the light consumed them.

When the light faded, the mist was gone, and the forest was silent once more.

Kael collapsed to his knees, the phoenix landing beside him with a soft chirp. Its flames were dim, and Kael could feel its exhaustion through the bond. Thane approached, his face lined with fatigue.

"That was too close," Thane said, offering Kael a hand. "We can't keep running like this. We need a plan."

Kael accepted the hand, pulling himself to his feet. "What kind of plan?"

Thane's gaze was distant, his expression unreadable. "The Venators will be on us soon. And the Wilds won't stop hunting us. We need allies. We need answers. And most of all, we need to figure out why that phoenix chose you."

Kael looked at the small bird, its golden eyes meeting his. "It's more than a choice," he said quietly. "It's a bond. And I won't let it down."

Thane nodded, his expression softening. "Good. Because if we're going to survive what's coming, we'll need every ounce of that strength."

As they descended from the outcrop, Kael felt a renewed sense of purpose. The Wilds were a dangerous and unpredictable place, but he wasn't alone. With the phoenix by his side and Thane's guidance, he was ready to face whatever came next.
