Chereads / Beastsworn: The Awakening Pact / Chapter 13 - XIII. The Weight of Recognition

Chapter 13 - XIII. The Weight of Recognition

The morning after the attack, the grove felt impossibly quiet. The air was still heavy with the scent of scorched earth, and faint claw marks gouged into the trees served as stark reminders of the battle. Kael sat by the fire, absentmindedly stroking the phoenix, which dozed in his lap, its warmth soothing but laced with fatigue.

Thane crouched nearby, sharpening his blade while Shadowfang kept watch. His expression was unreadable, but the tension in his movements betrayed his thoughts.

"We need to move," Thane said finally, breaking the silence. "Merrik's retreat wasn't a defeat. It was a delay."

Kael nodded, though his mind was still fixated on the titan. Its presence had been overwhelming, its power undeniable. "What was that thing, really? You called it a titan."

Thane glanced at him, his eyes narrowing. "Titans are the guardians of the Wilds, remnants of a time before humanity thought it could conquer this land. They're ancient, powerful, and tied to the balance of nature itself. They don't intervene unless something threatens that balance."

Kael frowned. "So why did it help us?"

"Because of the phoenix," Thane said simply. "That bond of yours… it's no ordinary connection. You've awakened something far greater than you understand."

Whispers in the Wind

Their journey resumed before the sun fully rose, the grove disappearing behind them as they ventured deeper into the Wilds. The terrain grew more treacherous, with jagged cliffs and dense undergrowth slowing their progress. Kael kept his senses sharp, wary of any sign of Merrik or his hunters.

As they climbed a steep incline, Thane suddenly halted, his hand raised for silence. Shadowfang's ears flattened, and the wolf emitted a low growl.

"What is it?" Kael whispered.

Thane pointed to a ridge overlooking the valley below. Kael squinted, his heart sinking as he spotted figures moving through the trees—Merrik's hunters, their beasts prowling alongside them. But they weren't alone. A larger group of armored figures marched with them, their banners emblazoned with a symbol Kael didn't recognize: a coiled serpent wrapped around a shattered sun.

"Who are they?" Kael asked, his voice hushed.

Thane's jaw tightened. "Trouble. That's the insignia of the Venator Order. They're tamers like Merrik, but they operate under the guise of 'protecting humanity.' In truth, they're mercenaries, capturing or killing any beast they consider a threat—and anyone who stands in their way."

Kael's stomach churned. "So they're after the phoenix?"

Thane nodded grimly. "And if the Venators are involved, this isn't just about Merrik's vendetta anymore. The Order doesn't stop until they get what they want."

The Hidden Path

Thane led them away from the ridge, taking a narrow path that twisted through the mountains. The air grew colder, and the phoenix nestled closer to Kael, its warmth a welcome reprieve from the chill. Shadowfang moved ahead, its sharp eyes scanning the trail for danger.

As they pressed on, Kael couldn't shake the feeling that they were being watched. The shadows seemed to shift around them, and every rustle of leaves set his nerves on edge.

"We're being followed," Kael said quietly.

Thane didn't slow. "I know. Stay close and keep quiet."

They continued in tense silence until they reached a rocky outcrop overlooking a vast expanse of forest. Thane crouched, gesturing for Kael to do the same. He pointed to a narrow crevice in the cliffside below.

"There's a cave system there," Thane said. "It's dangerous, but it'll give us cover. The Venators won't risk chasing us into the depths."

Kael hesitated, glancing at the dark opening. "And what about the creatures inside?"

Thane gave him a wry smile. "We'll deal with them if we have to. Better them than the Venators."

Into the Depths

The cave swallowed them in darkness, the only light coming from the faint glow of the phoenix's flames. The air was damp and heavy, and the walls were slick with moss. Shadowfang growled low, its ears twitching at every echo.

"Stay close," Thane warned. "These caves have a way of disorienting even the most experienced hunters."

As they ventured deeper, the path widened into a massive cavern. Stalactites hung from the ceiling like jagged teeth, and an underground river carved a shimmering path through the stone. The faint sound of rushing water echoed through the chamber.

Kael felt a chill run down his spine. "Something doesn't feel right."

Thane nodded, his hand resting on his blade. "You're not wrong. We're not alone."

A guttural roar shattered the silence, and a massive shape emerged from the shadows. It was a beast unlike any Kael had seen before—a hulking creature with stone-like skin and glowing amber eyes. Its claws scraped against the rock as it advanced, its growl reverberating through the cavern.

Thane drew his blade, his expression grim. "A cave guardian. Perfect."

The phoenix flared, its flames brightening as it prepared to fight. Kael reached out through the bond, feeling the creature's courage bolstering his own. "We can take it," he said, though his voice wavered.

Thane smirked. "That's the spirit."

Trial by Fire

The guardian lunged, its massive claws swiping at Kael. He rolled to the side, the phoenix swooping down to unleash a burst of fire. The flames struck the creature's stony hide, causing it to roar in pain but not slowing its advance.

Thane moved with precision, his blade finding weak points in the guardian's armor. Shadowfang darted around the beast, its teeth snapping at its legs to keep it off balance. But the creature was relentless, shrugging off their attacks as it focused on Kael.

Kael scrambled to his feet, his mind racing. He reached out to the phoenix, their bond surging with energy. Together, they channeled their power, summoning a blast of golden fire that struck the guardian's chest. The beast staggered, cracks forming in its stony skin.

"Keep it up!" Thane shouted, landing a powerful blow that drove the creature back.

The phoenix soared higher, its flames intensifying as it prepared for a final strike. Kael felt the bond deepen, their energies merging into a single, overwhelming force. With a cry, he unleashed the phoenix's power, a brilliant inferno that engulfed the guardian.

When the flames subsided, the creature stood motionless for a moment before crumbling into a pile of ash and stone. The cavern fell silent once more, save for the sound of Kael's ragged breathing.

Thane clapped him on the shoulder. "Not bad, kid. You're starting to get the hang of this."

Kael managed a weak smile. "Let's just hope there aren't any more surprises."

Thane chuckled, but his expression quickly turned serious. "Come on. The Venators won't wait forever."

As they pressed deeper into the caves, Kael couldn't help but feel that their challenges were only beginning.
