Chereads / Beastsworn: The Awakening Pact / Chapter 10 - X. Flames of Resolve

Chapter 10 - X. Flames of Resolve

The next morning, the grove felt heavier, the air thick with anticipation. Though Merrik had retreated, his presence lingered like the faint smell of smoke after a wildfire. Kael barely slept, his mind racing with the memory of their battle and the overwhelming surge of power he'd felt through the bond.

The phoenix chick chirped softly from its perch on a low branch. Its golden feathers shimmered in the sunlight, and Kael could feel its steady, calming presence in his mind. Even so, he couldn't shake the weight of responsibility pressing on his shoulders.

Thane approached, looking better after a night of rest, though his movements were still stiff. Shadowfang padded behind him, its silver eyes scanning the trees for any signs of danger.

"You did well last night," Thane said, handing Kael a strip of dried meat. "But Merrik won't make the same mistakes twice. If you want to survive, you'll need to push yourself—and that phoenix—beyond your limits."

Kael nodded, his resolve hardening. "What do I need to do?"

The Path to Mastery

Thane led Kael to the edge of the grove, where a narrow path wound deeper into the Wilds. "There's a place nearby," Thane said, pointing toward a distant rise where the forest thinned. "An old tamers' training ground. It's dangerous, but it's also where you'll find the tools to strengthen your bond."

Kael hesitated, glancing at the phoenix chick. It chirped and fluttered to his shoulder, its warmth filling him with a surge of confidence. "Dangerous how?"

Thane smirked faintly. "The Wilds don't give up their secrets easily. The ground is steep, the magic is unstable, and the creatures are... less than friendly. But if you're serious about protecting that phoenix, you'll need to learn how to fight in the thick of it."

Kael squared his shoulders. "I'll do it."

Thane clapped him on the back. "Good. Shadowfang and I will cover your trail and keep Merrik off your back. But you'll be on your own once you reach the training ground."

Kael nodded, his stomach tightening at the thought. Still, he knew Thane was right. If he wanted to survive—and protect the phoenix—he couldn't rely on anyone else.

Into the Wilds

The journey to the training ground was treacherous. The path twisted and turned through dense undergrowth, the trees growing thicker and more gnarled as Kael ascended. The air was heavy with the scent of earth and magic, and the occasional rustle of leaves reminded him that he was not alone.

The phoenix chick stayed close, its presence a steadying force as Kael navigated the uneven terrain. Several times, he felt the bond flare with a sense of caution, and each time, he stopped just in time to avoid a hidden pitfall or a snapping vine.

By the time Kael reached the training ground, his muscles ached, and his clothes were damp with sweat. The area was a natural amphitheater, its walls carved from ancient stone and overgrown with moss. Strange glyphs etched into the rock glowed faintly, pulsing with an otherworldly light.

The phoenix chirped, its flames flickering brighter as it perched on a nearby rock. Kael could feel its excitement—and its challenge.

"This is it, isn't it?" Kael murmured. "Where tamers are forged."

The chick trilled in agreement.

Trial by Magic

Kael stepped into the center of the amphitheater, the glyphs flaring brighter as he moved. The air hummed with energy, and Kael could feel it resonating with his bond mark. Then, with a crackle of light, the glyphs erupted into life, projecting ghostly figures into the arena.

The figures were tamers—warriors clad in ancient armor, each one accompanied by a glowing beast. They moved with purpose, their forms flickering like flames in a strong wind.

One of the figures stepped forward, its eyes burning like coals. It raised a spectral blade, and the air around Kael grew heavy. The phoenix squawked and leapt to his side, its wings flaring with golden light.

"You want me to fight them?" Kael asked, his voice shaking.

The figure didn't respond. It lunged, its blade slicing through the air. Kael barely dodged, the weapon's energy brushing past him with a searing heat. The phoenix responded instantly, sending a burst of flame toward the figure. The attack struck true, but the specter barely faltered.

Kael's heart raced as he dodged another strike. He could feel the phoenix's determination through the bond, urging him to focus. Closing his eyes, Kael reached out with his mind, connecting fully with his companion.

The next attack came, and this time, Kael was ready. He moved in sync with the phoenix, their actions seamless as they evaded the specter's strikes and countered with bursts of fire. The flames grew stronger with each attack, fueled by their deepening bond.

The Bond Strengthened

After what felt like hours, the final specter dissolved into light, and the glyphs dimmed. Kael collapsed to his knees, his breath ragged. The phoenix landed beside him, its feathers singed but its spirit unbroken.

"You did it," Kael whispered, a tired smile spreading across his face. He could feel the bond mark pulsing warmly, a sign of their growing connection.

The amphitheater's glyphs shimmered one last time, and a glowing symbol appeared in the center of the arena. Kael approached cautiously, the phoenix at his side. As he reached out, the symbol dissolved into a fine mist, flowing into his mark.

A surge of energy coursed through Kael, and he felt the bond solidify further. The phoenix chirped, its flames burning brighter than ever before.

"We're stronger now," Kael said, his voice filled with quiet awe. "But this is just the beginning."

A Shadow in the Distance

As Kael left the training ground, the horizon darkened. A storm was brewing—not of wind and rain, but of magic and fury. Kael could feel it in the air, a growing tension that set his nerves on edge.

Far below, hidden among the trees, Merrik watched. His glowing eyes narrowed as he traced Kael's path with a predatory smile.

"Enjoy your little victory, fledgling," Merrik murmured. "The Wilds are vast, and I'm not the only hunter in them."
