Pain, that was the first thing Veronica made sense of. "Ouch! My head hurts, what happened?" She asked no one in particular.
She tried lifting her right hand to touch her forehead but noticed that she couldn't feel her arm.
" What's this? I can't feel my arm. Come to think of it, I can't feel my body, I can't feel anything, except for the pain in my head." She thought to herself as different conversations kept flooding her mind.
" Did I hit my head hard on the floor when I fell?" Was I supposed to feel pain when I lost my mortal body?" She asked herself, with the lowest voice possible, making it impossible for anyone to hear her, except for the movements on her lips.
She tried to open her eyes but her vision was blurry, but after a couple more blinks, she could see clearly. She noticed the white ceiling and then looked around the room. It was painted in white and yellow, with the yellow shining almost brighter than the sun and the white, as snow.
" The afterworld sure is beautiful. Veronica mumbled and tried to get up.
"Veronica! You're awake!" A familiar voice rang out, and she snapped out of her thoughts to see Kiera, who looked overjoyed.
" Kiera? When did you die?" She asked, surprised to see her.
" What are you talking about?" Kiera asked her, looking confused.
" I mean, what are you doing in the afterlife?" Veronica asked further.
" I'm not dead and…" Kiera began but before she could finish her words, Veronica spoke again.
" Wait, if you didn't die, then how did you get into the afterlife? Are you some kind of spirit or…" She stopped and gasped," A white witch?" Her eyes widened.
" Shut the fu*k up, I'm not a spirit or a white witch. I told you to stop listening to Tom's silly talks about witches and all that. I guess you hit your head hard on the floor for you to be blabbing about the afterlife and all that. I don't understand what afterlife you're talking about. And Vee, you're not dead." Kiera explained.
" What are you talking about, how am I not dead? I should be dead, right?" Veronica asked.
" You're not dead! Now please, stop talking about dying, you're scaring me," Kiera said, tears building up in her eyes.
" If I'm not dead, then what happened? I passed out in the woods that were off limits and was attacked by some rogue wolves but surprisingly, I managed to chase them away but I guess I passed out right after." Veronica narrated her ordeal as she remembered it.
"So how am I not dead or at least injured?" She asked and checked her body for any injuries, but there were none.
" Wait, what? You were attacked by rogue wolves and you chased them away? All by yourself?" Kiera asked, almost screaming.
"Yes, that's what I remember." She answered Kiera, who still had her eyes wide open, like they were about to pop out of their sockets.
"But how? Are you sure you are not hallucinating?" Kiera asked, trying to confirm if she knew what she was saying.
" It's a long story, I'll tell you later." She said and Kiera nodded.
"So, I'm not dead?" She asked again.
" No, you're not." A male voice was heard. She immediately knew who it was and she felt downcasted.
" You gave us quite a scare, especially Kiera," Beck said with a soft laugh.
"How can he laugh when my emotions are like a rollercoaster right now, all because of him?" She thought to herself without saying a word.
"We searched for you all over the pack. We found your scent at the back of your house after two hours of searching and followed it into the woods." He explained.
" I'm assuming the 'we' is you and Kiera?" She asked.
" If it was just Beck and I, we wouldn't have found you on time," Kiera said with a look of panic in her eyes. " Beck made many people search for you, if only you knew how many people searched for you." She added.
" Could you give us some time? We have something important to discuss," Beck said, looking at Kiera with a smile on his face.
" Oh, sure, take your time," Kiera said, shutting the door behind her.
" How are you feeling?" He asked.
" Rejected." She answered, avoiding eye contact with him.
" Is that why you ran off into the dangerous part of the woods?" He asked.
" I didn't know where I ran to, I didn't want Kiera to see me like that, so I ran into the woods that were behind my house." She responded.
" Hmmmm." He sighed and an awkward silence filled the room right after.
" If that's all that you wanted to ask, you can please leave now. I'd like to rest," She said, breaking the silence and attempted to lay back on the bed but stopped midway when she heard him speak.
" That's not why I came." He said.
" Then why did you come?" She asked.
" Have you told anyone about… you know, what happened between us last night in the woods?" He asked, lowering his voice as much as he could.
" About you rejecting me?" She asked and he nodded, "As you can see, I just woke up and a few minutes later, you barged in."
" Okay, but don't tell anyone about it, or it…" He was speaking, but Veronica cut him off before he could finish.
" Or it could affect your position as the Alpha of our pack, right?," She said, finishing his statement, leaving him unable to speak further. " Yeah, I thought about it and you're good, I won't say anything to anyone." She lied through her teeth because, even if she wasn't going to tell anyone, it definitely won't be Kiera. She was definitely going to tell her.
" Okay, get well soon." He muttered.
" Why do you care? You rejected me," She said and the pain came at her with full force again and she flinched.
"Why am I still feeling pain? The pain should have gone, but why am I still feeling it?" She thought to herself as she sucked it all in.
" I… I have my reasons." He said.
" What reasons? I know it's because of you, becoming an Alpha and me being a weak Omega, but I just can't wrap my head around it." Veronica said as she tried to fight the tears that were about to pour out of her eyes.
" Why?" She asked, as the tears finally came rushing down.
She waited for Beck to say something, to at least give a meaningful explanation for his act, but nothing came out of his mouth. She looked up at him, only to find him staring at her with emotions that she could not explain, flashing through his eyes.
" Get better soon." That was all he said and left.
In less than five minutes, Kiera came back in, and Veronica broke down in tears immediately she saw her.
" Oh my, what happened? I saw Beck leave here with a strange look in his eyes, and I came in here only for you to break down like this?. What is going on? What happened? Talk to me, please." Kiera said in one breath.
Veronica didn't answer her and just kept crying like a baby. After a while of crying, she explained what happened with a runny nose.
" WHY THAT LITTLE PIECE OF SH*T!
How dare he reject an angel like you? I'll go give him a piece of my mind!" Kiera screamed, and immediately stood up, wanting to go out and cause a scene.
Veronica immediately held Kiera by the waist, preventing her from moving. "Don't. Please don't go, I'm fine, I promise." She assured Kiera.
She sighed and asked," Are you sure?"
" Yes, I am. So please don't go, you're the only person who listens and helps me and…and I need you." Veronica answered in a solemn voice.
" Well, I can't beat the soon-to-be Alpha of our pack, I'd be too crazy to do that, but for you, I think I would," Kiera said, turning to look at her with a smile, as she wiped her tears.
Veronica could not help but burst into laughter at Kiera's words, " Yeah, I know.", She said, still laughing.
"By the way, have you seen my phone? I can't seem to find it anywhere." She asked, looking at Kiera.
" Here you go, sweet cheeks. Mrs. Park saw it on the floor behind the pack house, lucky you, I was there to collect it from her before she could go through it. You know how nosy she can be. You're welcome." She said and handed the phone over to Veronica.
"Aw, you're the best, what would I ever do without you?" She said, hugging her tighter.
" Indeed, what would you do?" Kiera said, as she hugged her too.
"Thank you for always being there for me. I don't think I can ever survive without you." Veronica said as they both remained in each other's embrace.
