Chapter 1 - Asher Blackwood

The world as we know it was once a desolate place. War had ravaged the planet to the extent that it was on the brink of extinction. Seven individuals from the seven continents, decided to end the war and sign a treaty of peace so that a war of such magnitude would never repeat itself again.

But that was 200 years ago, now the world has advanced and technology was the order of the day. Asher Blackwood awakened in his room, he had been up all night on his computer playing video games but as he awakened, he felt no need to sleep at all.

He got up from his bed and proceeded to check out what his mother had prepared for breakfast, his father worked in the video game company where his favorite game was made but he never thought anything of it until his father brought the game home before it's official release date.

Asher had never thought anything was important until that day. From that day onward, he knew that his father's job was more important than anything in the world. As he walked down the stairs, he perceived the aroma of something nice and he knew what it was right away, it was what seemed to be his favorite food.

"Oh! You're awake." His mother Sasha Blackwood said as she noticed his presence. "How was your night?" She asked.

"Alright." Asher said with no show of emotion whatsoever, his face was stagnant and that was how he had been known for the past 15 years.

"Asher, you need to smile every once in a while. If you don't no one will want to be your friend." His mother said with a loving tone in her voice.

"Well, if he doesn't want to smile, then it's his choice." His father James Blackwood said in response.

"That's not a good thing to say James. You're the reason he continues to act this way." Sasha said.

"How is it my fault?" His father asked perplexed at the sudden turn of attention to him.

Asher saw no need to interfere in his parent's bickering, he simply took his food and water and went back to his room. He opened his window and looked out of it, the continent of Jardel had been the most successful out of the seven continents since the war two hundred years ago. It had the most advanced technology and the magical prowess of it's people had been at the top for the past two hundred years and no other continent comes close to them in either regard.

Asher went back to his reading table and ate his food in silence, he thought of many things as he ate. The world had become a boring place to him, this was the millionth time he was reborn and now in a new timeline. In his previous life, the world there had been in an apocalyptic situation and he was on the verge of ending the apocalypse when his time went up and he was reborn in this world.

From what he gathered in his previous lives, the world would always die from some cataclysmic event and all he had to do was let it happen but for some reason, he felt more comfortable in this current world and loved the way each day unfolded with something new. He liked his current parents and didn't even like thinking about losing them. But then again, the world would end one day and there was nothing he would be able to do to stop it.

As soon as he finished eating, he went into his bathroom to take his bath and prepare for school. He was in his final year of high school and the final exams were in nine months time. His father had already left for work and his mother was in the living room enjoying her favorite show when he walked past her and told her he was leaving.

"Have a good day at school, okay." Sasha said to him.

"Alright." Asher said as he closed the door behind him.

He walked the way to school as it was a few blocks away from his home. Jardel International Academy was the best school in all the seven continents, the results from the student's written exams, practical exams and magic exams showed why they were regarded as the cream of the crop. The classes were divided into two; Regular class and Elite class.

The Regular class students were those who weren't able to get enough marks to satisfy the school board enough for them to be put in the Elite class. The students of the Elite class were those of high class and those who were able to get extraordinary marks on the entrance exams.

Asher was a Regular class student but he didn't care, he just wanted to go through school and be done with it. Over his past lives, he has learned how to control his mana output and so he was able to get himself into the Regular class without any problem at all. He walked into his class without a care in the world and walked up to his seat and sat down facing the podium where the teacher would stand to teach.

The teacher, Miss Alexia walked in with a frown on her face, the entire class shushed and faced her. She looked at all of them pitifully and then sighed.

"As you all know, there will be two competitions this year. The Jardel International Academy Internal Magic Competition and the International Mage Tournament." Miss Alexia started, she stared at each of them with a serious look on her face.

Asher stared at her and wondered how this year's competitions would be. They were very prestigious competitions which were held once every six years and so most students of the academy on get to witness them either in their first year or final year.

"As you all know, the Regular class has already been deemed a failure but this year, the school board has decided to give you guys a chance and so would hold trials for each and every one of you." Miss Alexia said as she concluded and walked out of the class.

The class resumed it's boisterous activities, the students in the class discussed amongst themselves which one of them would get picked for the competition.

Asher just stared at them from his seat, he didn't seem it necessary to partake in competitions like this but now, he decided to do just the opposite.

The next day, the trials began in earnest, student's martial skill and magical capabilities were being put to the test and the school board decided to have them do it in a tournament style. Students from the Regular class and Elite class will be put up against each other.

"The first match of the day is Asher Blackwood of the Regular class taking on Daniel Lockhart of the Elite class." Mr Roger an Elite class teacher said.

"It's over for that guy." Someone from the crowd said.

"Yeah, Daniel Lockhart is the second strongest student in the entirety of the school so he would make light work of the other guy." Someone added.

"I know right." Another person said as well.

Asher sighed, even before the fight they had already begun to write him off. Well, it just depends on how the fight goes but he thought no matter the situation, he wouldn't go all out.
