Chapter Two: Hunger
Despite it being nighttime, the forest was very lively. Strange and scary voices and cries of wild beasts echoed throughout the forest. Despite those noises, Evel stood there motionless, staring at the dead body of his mother, tears flowing down his cheeks nonstop. If it were normal times, Evel would be scared out of his wits listening to those cries, but this time the deep pain and sorrow of his parents' sacrifice overtook the fear within his tiny heart. The last words of his mother were engraved in his mind and heart. "Don't worry, Mother. Your son will not disappoint you." Evel wiped away his tears and started to think about what to do next.
He first decided to clean up the bodies, as the smell of blood and death might attract deadly wild beasts. He could have left the bodies there and run away, but his heart didn't let him leave the body of his loving mother just like that.
He went to drag the body of the person in the black robe. But what he noticed next made him restless. That person was not completely dead yet. He was only unconscious due to the blood loss from his wounds. Evel was in a dilemma about what to do next. Even though that person was severely injured, it might not be difficult for him to kill a small brat like Evel when he is awake. "Should I just kill him while he is unconscious?" Evel hadn't taken the life of anyone before, so killing someone was quite difficult for him.
"Or should I leave him just like that? No, I can't leave him like this. I must kill him. After all, he killed my mom," Evel said, picking up the dagger from his mother's body and walking over to the unconscious person. He bent down and swung his dagger to thrust it into the person's throat, but his hand stopped in mid-air, and he began to hesitate again. Just then, his ears began to ring with his mother's last words: "Evel, you should survive." After that, all of his hesitation ended. He directly thrust the bloody dagger into the person's throat. As the dagger pierced the throat, the few breaths of life left in the person's body faded away, and he died. His eyes were open, staring directly at Evel's face as if he would get up and eat him alive, but he couldn't do so.
This was the first human that Evel had killed, and he was sure it would not be the last. He felt weird at that moment. He neither felt guilty nor felt like vomiting. It was very creepy, but what he felt was "Hunger," a very strong hunger. He wanted to eat and enjoy that delicate corpse. His inner feeling kept screaming in his mind to devour that corpse in one bite. But Evel was not insane enough to eat a human being.
"No, I can't waste time anymore if I don't want to become the food of wild beasts." Evel's expression became firm, and he started to settle the bodies.
He began to dig up the soil with the help of a dagger. The soil was black and wet, and the dagger he was holding was very sharp. At first, despite his weak hands, he dug without any break or exhaustion, but as the hole became a bit deeper, the roots of the tree made it difficult to dig further. The dug-up space was not enough to hold his mother, but he was helpless.
After almost half an hour, the scene was almost clean. There were no blood traces left at all, as they were covered by soil and leaves. However, if noticed carefully, the place looked quite different from the surroundings—after all, Evel was just a kid. The only odd thing left on the ground was the corpse of the person covered in a black cloth.
Whenever Evel saw that corpse, he felt a strong sense of "Hunger." After doing all this, Evel was truly hungry. "Eating a little won't be a problem, right?" he thought. He then slowly approached the corpse and, after staring at it for a while, took out his dagger.
