Chereads / Silent Descent: Retrieval / Chapter 2 - Abnormally

Chapter 2 - Abnormally

Kingsley Talys, a commoner who got accepted into the nation's private school, had nothing special about him. His looks were average, no background; all he had was intelligence and hard work.

Or so we thought. But today, Kyel stumbled upon something interesting in a remote area of the school.

It had a multi-level rooftop. Kyel was eating his lunch alone, as he did every day, when he heard footsteps approaching.

A clichéd scenario—the rich boys bullying the commoner peasant.

As they entered through the door, Kyel watched them from above. They pushed Talys hard onto the ground. He tried to get up, but they shoved him down again.

Nothing more to say; they beat him senseless, his bloodied face becoming unrecognizable.

One of them sneered, "Hahaha, peasant. Next time I see you near Jenny, I'll crush your balls. She isn't meant for you."

"We really went at it this time; let's see if you can recover fast."

Kyel continued eating while watching. Five minutes later, they left, satisfied that Talys was unconscious.

But just after they left, something strange happened that caught Kyel's interest. He heard noises.

He thought it might be Talys sobbing, but it sounded like he was talking to someone. Maybe the poor boy had lost it and gone crazy.

But that wasn't the case. Kyel had always had the ability to hear even the quietest whispers.

Talys was talking to someone—Kyel was certain of it. But who? He surveyed the entire rooftop, and there was no one except Talys and himself.

The strangest part was still to come. When Talys got up, his face was clean and fresh. The bloodied, bruised face was gone, as if he hadn't just been beaten up by those rich bullies.

Kyel was dumbfounded. What the hell is happening? Was it some kind of trick? With his own eyes, he had watched blood gushing from Talys's mouth and nose.

The boys had beaten him mercilessly, yet now Talys's face had no trace of blood, not even a bruise.

One word filled Kyel's mind: abnormality.

Talys, unaware he was being watched, spoke with confidence, "Such scumbags. I'll pay them back a hundredfold in the future. And as for that bitch Jenny, I'll do as I please with her. Everything's going well; with my Goldfinger system, I'll be at the top of the world in a few years."

"I'll have the top beauties by my side, countless children, power, wealth, control. I'm destined. I'm the protagonist of this generation."

Then he laughed maniacally.

Kyel had a million thoughts racing through his mind, but he managed to stay composed.

He made no sound, waiting until Talys left. He was at a loss for words. What was that system? Goldfinger? Something out of those circulating novels?

He recalled what one of the bullies had said: "Let's see if you can recover fast."

Were they referring to this? The rapid healing process? This was something out of this world; he knew what he had seen.

"Such an abnormality," Kyel murmured, surprised. He didn't finish his lunch. He heard the school bell ring, and he, too, left for class.

He didn't pay attention in any of his classes; his mind was racing with what he had seen and heard.

The school days passed like this. Kyel went unnoticed by everyone, as usual, as if an aura kept people distanced from him.

From that day onward, Kyel began stalking Talys. Unfortunately, nothing strange happened after that, and, to make things worse, Talys was growing suspicious. He felt like someone was watching him.

Kyel knew he had to stop before making Talys even more wary. But he needed something to satisfy his curiosity. He needed to figure out this abnormality and determine if it had to be eliminated.

Was this his sense of righteousness or fear? He had been indifferent all his life, even towards his parents' deaths.

So why was he curious about someone he didn't even know? From that day on, Kyel's life began to show a hint of brightness; for the first time, he became interested in something—a feeling.

What was that feeling inside him that drove him to follow this boy?

Kyel had only learned the boy's name after that day.

Was this just to satisfy his curiosity? Kyel knew it wasn't—there was much more to it.

And for the first time in his life,

Kyel felt envy—a sin that would lead him down a path he couldn't have imagined, not even in his wildest dreams, dreams he hadn't dared to dream.

Kyel determined he had to uncover Talys's secret, to know if it was dangerous.

Then, if possible, he would obtain it for himself.

If not, he would eliminate Talys—kill him—with fierce determination.

Kyel was set on this mission.
