Chapter 4 - [THE SMUGGELING RUN]

[Ascendance: The Journey to Type 7. Ch_004]

Zephyr Nexus Star System sparkled with celestial brilliance,

a vibrant tapestry of colors glistening against the deep void of space.

Kael Ashvale stood at the helm of the Starship of War, his heart racing with anticipation and trepidation.

This was his first mission for the Stellar Syndicate, and he was determined to prove his worth. "Alright, crew! We're heading to Veloria Prime."

Kael announced, his voice was filled with excitement. He surveyed the twenty-five crew members filling the ship's command center. The hum of machinery and murmurs subsided as they focused their attention on him.

"Don't underestimate this job. We're delivering a ship worth 400 million Galactic Credits

inside the Imperium Leviathan, a flagship of the Baroness Astrid Velorium. Any misstep could be catastrophic, so I need everyone sharp and ready," he continued, locking eyes with each crew member, instilling a sense of purpose.

Jaxon Voss, the tech specialist, was busy at his console, his brow furrowed in concentration.

"I'm configuring the encryption for our communications. I don't want anyone eavesdropping on our plans.

We can't risk the Syndicate or the authorities getting wind of this," he stated, determination evident in his voice.

"Good thinking, Jaxon. Keep it tight," Kael replied, nodding in approval.

Rhea Solis, the navigator, adjusted the control panel, her fingers dancing over the buttons.

"Coordinates set for Veloria Prime. We'll arrive in three days if we maintain our speed.

Orin, make sure the engines are running smoothly," she called over her shoulder.

Orin Kade, the ship's mechanic, was already assessing the ship's systems.

"We'll be fine as long as the sub-light engines hold up. I'll keep an eye on the diagnostics,"

he assured her, grease smudged on his hands attesting to his work.

The crew busied themselves with preparations, but Kael couldn't shake the nagging worry that

always crept in before a mission. He felt a weight of responsibility for their safety, knowing that if anything went wrong, it would fall on his shoulders.

Three days into their journey, as the ship glided smoothly through the cosmos,

Kael gathered the crew for a briefing. "We're approaching Veloria Prime's atmosphere

Everyone should be on high alert. Once we land, we'll transfer the Starship of War into the Imperium Leviathan.

Remember, no weapons drawn unless absolutely necessary. We're here to deliver, not fight."

As they neared the planet, an alarm suddenly blared through the ship.

"Warning! Engine failure in the primary reactor!" Jaxon shouted, panic evident in his voice.

"Orin!" Kael barked, turning to the mechanic. "What's going on?"

"I don't know! It's like someone tampered with it!" Orin responded,

sweat beading on his forehead as he rushed to the console.

Kael clenched his fists, frustration boiling inside him. "We need to stabilize it.

Rhea, can you keep us steady while Orin works?"

"Trying my best, Kael! But the atmospheric turbulence is increasing!"

Rhea replied, her voice strained as she fought to maintain control.

"Everyone else, strap in!" Kael ordered, gripping the edge of the control panel.

"We can't afford to crash. Orin, what do we need to do?"

Orin's hands flew over the buttons. "If I can reroute the auxiliary power to the reactor,

it might buy us some time, but I need a few minutes!"

"Jaxon, help him!" Kael commanded. "Rhea, keep us steady! We're not going down today!"

As the ship shook violently, Kael felt the weight of leadership pressing on him.

He had fought through the streets of Tidespire, battled Celestials

and overcome immense odds, but this felt different.

This was a test of his resolve and his ability to lead under pressure.

"Kael!" Rhea shouted over the chaos. "The turbulence is too much! We're going to lose altitude!"

"Hold on! We'll stabilize this!" he roared, "Orin, are we ready?"

"Almost! Just a few more seconds!" Orin shouted, his focus unwavering.

The ship lurched again, throwing everyone off balance. Kael felt his heart race,

but he wouldn't let fear take over.

"Everyone, brace yourselves!" he yelled, gripping the console as he prepared for a rough landing.

With one final push, Orin slammed the buttons. "I've rerouted the power! It's working!" he exclaimed.

"Rhea, pull up now!" Kael commanded, and she yanked the controls, managing to stabilize their descent.

They glided shakily into the atmosphere of Veloria Prime, the ship shuddering violently.

Kael held his breath, his eyes glued to the control panel.

"We've stabilized! We're entering the atmosphere!" Rhea cheered, a hint of relief breaking through her stress.

As they broke through the clouds, a sprawling city came into view, surrounded by lush greenery.

"We made it!" Kael breathed, allowing himself a moment of relief.

"Landing gear engaged," Orin announced, and the ship touched down with a jolt,

the crew letting out a collective sigh of relief.

"Great work, everyone," Kael said, glancing around the command center.

"We're not out of the woods yet, but let's get ready to meet our contact. Jaxon

keep monitoring the systems, and make sure we're ready for a quick getaway."

Once they disembarked from the Starship of War

Kael led the crew through the bustling docks of Veloria Prime towards the

towering silhouette of the Imperium Leviathan. The warship loomed above them,

a behemoth of steel and firepower, its presence commanding respect from everyone nearby.

As they approached, Kael felt a mix of awe and apprehension.

The Imperium Leviathan was known throughout the galaxy as one of the most formidable warships, and now they were about to deliver their cargo inside it.

"Stay sharp, everyone," Kael cautioned as they neared the docking bay.

"This is a high-security area, and we need to maintain professionalism.

Any slip-up could ruin our reputation with the Baroness and the Syndicate."

The crew nodded, determination etched on their faces. They entered the ship,

greeted by a pair of stern guards who eyed them warily. Kael stepped forward,

displaying the identification he had been given by the Syndicate

"We're here to deliver the Starship of War to Baroness Astrid Velorium," he announced.

The guards exchanged glances before one stepped forward, scanning the identification.

"Proceed, but know that any disturbance will not be tolerated," he warned.

They walked through the vast corridors of the Imperium Leviathan, marveling at the technology that surrounded them.

Kael felt a sense of pride swell within him as he navigated his crew toward the designated docking bay.

"Here we are," he said, stopping before a massive bay door. "Once we unload,

we need to be prepared for the Baroness's inspection."

The crew worked together, unloading the Starship of War with precision.

Kael watched closely, ensuring everything went smoothly. Soon,

the ship stood gleaming under the bright lights of the docking bay, a testament to their efforts.

Moments later, the massive doors swung open, revealing Baroness Astrid Veloium. She walked in with an air of authority, flanked by her entourage of elite guards.

Her sharp gaze swept over the crew, scrutinizing them as she approached.

"Kael Ashvale," she said, her voice smooth yet commanding. "You've made quite the impression.

Let's see if the Starship of War lives up to its reputation."

Kael swallowed hard but stood firm. "Baroness, we've ensured it's equipped with the latest weaponry and stealth technology.

It's ready for deployment," he replied, his tone steady.

"Show me," she demanded, her eyes narrowing with expectation.

As they led her to the Starship of War, Kael felt a sense of pride and anxiety mingle within him.

He couldn't afford any mistakes. They reached the ship, and he gestured for her to inspect it.

The Baroness stepped aboard, her gaze moving methodically over every detail.

"Impressive craftsmanship," she acknowledged, nodding slightly. "But I need more than words.

I want a demonstration of its capabilities."

"Of course, Baroness. We can arrange that," Kael replied, feeling a surge of adrenaline.

"But first, we must ensure the systems are operational."

As the crew prepared for the demonstration, Kael turned to Jaxon. "Is everything ready on our end?"

"Systems are operational and ready for testing," Jaxon confirmed, excitement buzzing in his voice.

Kael took a deep breath. "Let's do this."

Meanwhile, back on Tidespire, Elara paced their modest apartment, a sense of anxiety gnawing at her. The days felt endless without Kael by her side. "What if something happens to him?" she murmured, running a hand over her abdomen, feeling the gentle flutter of their unborn child.

Her husband, Caelan Valen, entered the room, his expression warm yet concerned.

"Elara, he's strong. You know that. He's been through so much already. We have to trust him,"

he said gently, placing a hand on her shoulder.

"I know, but it's different this time. He's out there risking his life for something dangerous,"

she replied, her voice trembling.

Caelan nodded, understanding her fears. "We can't let fear control us. You need to focus on yourself and the baby. Kael will return. I believe that."

Elara smiled softly, appreciating his support. "You're right.

I just wish I could be there with him. He's been through so much already."

"Perhaps we can prepare something for when he returns. A celebration," Caelan suggested,

trying to lift her spirits. "An idea worth pursuing," Elara mused, a smile breaking through her worry.

"I want him to know how much we love and support him." Caelan grinned. "Then let's do it. We'll throw the biggest welcome home party this slum has ever seen!"

Back on the Imperium Leviathan, Kael and his crew worked diligently to prepare for the demonstration.

The Baroness had gathered her advisors, watching closely as they began to showcase the Starship of War's capabilities.

"Activating stealth mode," Jaxon announced, fingers flying over the console.

The ship hummed to life, its exterior shifting to reflect its surroundings, becoming nearly invisible.

Elara's advisors exchanged glances, impressed. "Impressive technology," one of them murmured.

Kael took the opportunity to present the ship's weaponry. "Next,

we'll demonstrate the pulse cannons and missile systems," he declared, excitement threading through his voice.

As they prepared, a warning alarm suddenly blared through the ship. "Warning!

Unauthorized access detected! Intruders in the docking bay!" a voice announced.

Kael's heart dropped. "What? How did they find us?" he demanded, adrenaline surging through him.

"Baroness, we need to secure the ship! This might be a set-up!" Rhea shouted, her eyes wide with fear.

"Prepare for combat!" Kael ordered, his instincts kicking in. "Everyone, to your stations! We need to protect the Starship at all costs!"

As they scrambled to respond to the threat, Kael felt the weight of leadership settle heavily upon his shoulders.

He couldn't let fear take over; they needed to act decisively.

"Orin, can you lock down the bay doors?" Kael shouted as he readied his weapon.

"On it!" Orin replied, racing to the controls.

Kael rallied the crew. "Stick together! We've faced worse odds before.

Let's show them what we're made of!"

As the intruders began to breach the docking bay, Kael led the crew into battle,

determination fueling his every move. They fought fiercely, defending their ship against overwhelming odds.

Elara watched the skies darken over Tidespire as she tended to the garden. The small plants brought her comfort, a reminder of the life growing inside her.

She placed a hand on her belly, feeling the baby move once more, a gentle reminder of hope.

"I wish Kael was here," she whispered, gazing toward the horizon, yearning for the moment he would return home safely.

Suddenly, a group of friends approached, drawn by the fresh blooms. "Elara! We heard Kael's mission is underway. How are you holding up?" Cassandra Reed asked, her voice warm with concern.

"I'm trying to stay positive. He's out there, and I just hope he's safe," Elara admitted,

a hint of vulnerability surfacing.

"Kael is strong, just like you. And he'll return, I promise," Cassandra assured her,

placing a comforting hand on Elara's shoulder.

"Thank you, Cassandra. I appreciate your support," Elara replied, her heart warming at the gesture.

As they chatted, Elara felt a sense of community surrounding her, a reminder that she wasn't alone in her worries. "We should throw a celebration for when he returns!" she suggested suddenly.

"That's a fantastic idea! We can prepare a feast and decorate the place," Cassandra enthused,

excitement brightening her features.

Elara felt a surge of hope. "Yes! I want him to know how much we care. He deserves it after everything."

Back in the Imperium Leviathan, the battle raged on as Kael and his crew fought to repel the intruders.

They worked in sync, each member playing a crucial role as they defended their ship.

"Kael, we've got hostiles breaching the northern entrance!" Rhea shouted, her voice urgent.

"Move to intercept!" Kael commanded, leading the charge alongside Orin and Jaxon.

"Cover me! I'm setting up a barricade!" Orin yelled as he positioned himself strategically.

Kael felt adrenaline coursing through his veins. He couldn't fail his crew.

They had come too far to let anything derail their mission.

"Engage defensive measures!" Kael ordered, firing at the incoming threats.

The ship rocked as blaster fire echoed around them.

"Orin, how long until we can launch?" Kael called, focusing on the battle.

"Not long! But we need to clear these intruders first!" Orin shouted back,

his brow furrowed with concentration.

As Kael fought, his heart pounding and breaths growing ragged, a sudden jolt surged through him. A message, stark and ominous, flashed across his mind:
