Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: Why Ruin A Beautiful Day?

Today was supposed to be normal, another good day. It wasn't really warm today and there was a nice cool breeze. Class was filled with the talks of friends trying to coordinate which schools they'd take their college entrance exams for. I was even looking forward to the end of class. Since I was supposed to be going out with them to Karaoke. So why'd she have to ruin my day by leaving a letter in my locker.

Even as I sat there in class ignoring the lessons and watching the trees sway with the wind. Something I found myself enjoying whenever I was bored in class. Was over shadowed by the dread of meeting Azurie when it was over.

"Yo, Haruma. You coming?" Toshi called out as he slung his bag over his shoulder. His short brown hair and dark eyes covered by his glasses.

"Can you and Dazai wait for me by the gate?" I asked sounding exhausted as I got up from my desk. "I have to meet Azurie on the roof today." I explained as I slung my bag over my shoulder and walked to the door.

"Yeesh, please let her down easy." He pleaded as he put his hand on my shoulder stopping me. "You're already not the class favorite. I'd hate for things to get any worse during our final year."

I shrugged his shoulder off my hand and made my way out the door. Looking out the window I could see friends catching up with each other. To either walk home together or hangout after class. I was hoping to be one of those people right now. Even as I climbed the steps to the roof I wondered why I was doing this.

I didn't exactly have a reputation for being a nice person. It wouldn't have been uncharacteristic of me to just leave her on the roof waiting for me. So why was I climbing the steps?

I opened the door and was greeted by a cool gust of wind whipping at my messy black hair. On the other end of the roof stood Azurie. Her back turned to me as she stood there looking over the railing. Her short pink hair stopping just above her shoulders. When she turned to face me I could feel my heart racing with anxiety.

Her plump lips and pink eyes. Her short and slender frame. All great reasons as to why she had so many fans among the boys. But it was the fact that she was also smart that made me respect her. Always placing at the top of our year like it was effortless to her. And having a humble personality to never turn down requests to help others study. It was the only reason I found myself able to have the short conversations we've had the past few months.

"Leaving a letter in my locker is a bit old school don't you think?" I asked as I shoved my hands in my pockets.

They were shaking and the last thing I wanted her to see was that I was nervous. I always made myself appear calm and nonchalant and I wasn't going to let that change now. No matter the situation or what kind of girl called for me.

"Well you have a habit of leaving me on read." She responded with a pout.

It was cute. It would have any of her fans soaring over the moon to see this pout. Yet I'm standing here wishing that I could trade places with any of them. I hated this scenario. I thought I'd never be in this situation again when I turned down a girl by the front gate and she smacked me on my first year. It caused a scene and I never seemed able to live that down.

"So what'd you call me up here for that you couldn't tell me over text? I was hoping to meet up with my friends after class." I said as I rubbed the back of my head.

I had no clue why I brought up the fact that I had plans. I've learned my lesson that girls hate when you bring stuff up like that. It made them feel like you'd rather be doing something else than be there with them. Even if it was the truth it didn't matter.

"It'll only take a minute, okay?" She didn't seem bothered about me having plans as she smiled at me. "I called you out here… Well because, I want you to go out with me." She blushed hard as she said those words.

"I'm good." I responded without a second of thought.

The moment those words left my mouth and her face was changing to a look of shock. Everything around me froze. Everything taking on a different shade of purple as I stood there. Unsuspended and completely normal in color.

"What kind of response was that?" A voice echoed out around me.

In a swirl of colors in front of my face a small egg shaped creature appeared. Floating right in front of me with a little suit and top hat on. It looked stupid beyond belief.

"I mean is that seriously how you respond to a girl when she-" It couldn't finish it's question before I punched it away.

I looked around me and nothing changed. Feeling both trapped and disappointed in the situation.

"What was that?" It shouted as it rubbed it's cheek on the floor.

"I don't know." I shrugged casually. "Thought if I did that I would be free."

It's mouth hung agape as it took in what I had said and how casually I acted. Then it swirled in a flow of colors before transforming into a black cat. Yet it still had on the top hat from before.

"Unbelievable. Well lets hope you wouldn't kick a cat." It said as he made his way towards me.

"I wouldn't push it." I responded without a hint of emotion. "So are you going to explain things to me in a monologue or do I have to guess?"

"Sarcastic. I really have my work cut out for me." The cat sighed before sitting down in front of me. "I'm a mystical being sent by the gods to prevent sorry sacks like you from living meaningless lives."

"That was direct."

"And I can already tell that you're going to be my hardest assignment yet. You look terrible, no hobbies, no passion, and zero date-a-bility. You're utterly hopeless." The cat shouted profusely while pointing a paw at me. "It's almost like you're purposely trying to make yourself look unappealing."

"Why should any of that matter to me? Isn't a meaningful life really up to interpretation? So

I'd say that I'm living a pretty meaningful life." I said waving my hand dismissively.

"You're lying."
