I am working in engineering, arguing with B'Elanna about the safety of using transporters of living beings. She keep insisting they are perfectly safe and that I was being paranoid again.
Just because I turned in a ten page essay to her, Tuvok, Janeway and Chakotay a couple of weeks ago don't mean I'm paranoid.
While I admit the suggestion of shielded popout machine gun turrets being installed at each corridor intersection might have been a bit much but they could at least have considered the phaser strips on the walls and the physical closing bulkheads.
At the very least I have them to install physical bars at the holding cells.
Ten pages of suggestions and that's the only one they picked. The rest was either 'paranoid' or to 'invasive'.
I mean, having the computer tracking where everyone is at all times and sound the alarm if people go missing or if there is more people than there should be sound like it's just common sense after all. But noooo.
Invasion of privacy.
Shaking my head I give her a look "You can not seriously tell me that being ripped apart at a molecular level and then put together again at a new location can possibly be safe! Even if it dont actually KILL YOU and replace you with a copy..." she simply snort
"Now you are just being silly. Microscanner." and I hand it over
"Even if you ignore that the amount of things that can go wrong. Bad WEATHER have been known to disrupt matter streams in the past, not to mention a million other things. There is no way i'm getting on one of those things. They should be limited to cargo transfer and that's it."
She close up the hatch and turn to me "Look, you have transporter phobia, its normal even among people from this time period. But if you are going to work on a starship you just need to get over it." and then ask the computer if Tuvok and Neelix is back onboard yet before giving me a smile "Head over to transporter room 2. They should be beaming back at any moment and you can see that it's perfectly safe."
I frown slightly "If you are sure..." and she nod
"Your shift is almost over anyway."
I shrug "Ok, thanks." before I make my way out of engineering and up to transporter room 2 just in time to see Harry Kim finish working with something "Hello Harry. Lieutenant Torres wished for me to observe a beaming. She think it will help me get over my perfectly rational fear of being turned into my separate molecules."
Voyagers private whipping boy simply give me a grin "Observe all you want. You know, for someone that like technology so much that you want it built into your own body, you sure are hesitant about some parts of it."
I shrug with a mechadendrite "Just because I see the limits in my form and seek to correct them don't mean I jump on any new technology put in front of me. I have read the reports, Transporters are to flaky to risk putting people through."
He just shrug "Its safe. I have been through it hundreds of times and I'm fine. Its the safest way to travel. Either way the molecular imaging scanner is fixed now so we can beam them on board." and he tap his combadge "Kim to away team. Sorry for the delay, we are ready to bring you back."
I just give him a slightly startled look "You are not even going to try it first? With like a bunny or something? At least a box?"
He sigh "The molecular imaging scanned just needed realignment. It's nothing serious." before he start the transport "Energizing."
As one beam of energy materialize in the transporter the crewman assisting Harry frown at the instruments "Something is wrong, Sir. I'm only getting one pattern..."
Kim give him a curious look "Tuvok or Neelix?" and the crewman shake his head
"I don't think it's either of them." and Ensign Kim order the abort but its to late.
On the transporter pad Tuvix is standing.
Nobody ever listen to the cyborg.
