Chereads / a shipload of fools (ST:V SI) / Chapter 5 - Still Luddites just not as bad as the canon Luddites

Chapter 5 - Still Luddites just not as bad as the canon Luddites

The ship shudder from weapons fire as I huddle in my room. This is getting embarrassing...and terrifying. Lets not forget terrifying.

Other than locking my door there is nothing I can do. That's sodding terrifying! The ship shake again and I try to read my PAD and ignore the fact that I can suddenly find myself breathing vacuum.

Soon the red alert sound stop playing and the shaking stop. I peak out from beneath my bed, hoping its over. Yes its silly hiding beneath the bed, but it helped stopping me from running around in circles screaming like a loon.

Turns out it was the Kazon attacking us with the help of a inside man in engineering. Fucking traitor.

Neelix was the one that stopped him...good man. If there was some kind of currency in use on this ship, I would buy him a beer.

Also, turns out that just because you have access to the technology and know it can be done don't mean you instantly turn into a transhuman god.

I actually found that there are transhumanists in the federation but they are rare as flying pigs due to the bad to genetic enhancements. Also, Bashirs parents broke the law because they wanted him to be better than the rest, not the story they told him and everyone else.

It is actually legal to use genetic modification to repair birth defects like his, it's just a drawn out process that need to go through committees and medical boards and it wouldn't actually made him superhuman, just baseline.

Other than correcting defects like that, genetic enhancement is outlawed.

There are people with cybernetics but its mostly to correct medical problems like Geordi Laforge eyesight. Some are even illegal or restricted in large parts of the federation, like dataports.

Also, transhumanists don't go under that name, they don't have a name to be gathered under. It's a term that's been forgotten if it ever existed here. I couldn't locate it in the database.

Now when I know everything have calmed back down I return to my quarters to get changed into the running clothes and head up to the holodeck. The environment of the day for the open holodeck is a Vulcan desert.

I activate my new personal training, a stereotypical drill Sergeant to keep me motivated before I start to jog.

Tomorrow I'm going to talk to the Doc about possible cybernetics. I'm not going to go Borg on them, I plan on adding in first hand instead of replacing. If your new hand break down, you are fucked. If your mechadendrite break down, you still have two good hands.

Backups are good.

Besides, I'm still catching up on basic education and I'm starting to feel like a useless waste of space. I need to find something to do so I assist in running this ship. There are limited resources after all and if I'm just a drain...well lets just say that it make me feel bad even if the Feds don't complain.

Not yet anyway. I don't exactly know enough to help in engineering but maybe I can assist in hydroponics or something.

Hell, I'll even try my hand at cooking if I have to.

I couldn't do worse than Neelix, right?

Yes. Yes I could.

I hope you appreciate my research effort. I actually have to watch the Voyager episode before I include it in the story so I get the details right. Feel my pain!
