Chapter 7 - 7. insight into the world

At dusk

Looking at the sun slanting on the horizon and sipping a cup of coffee, Sitting in the chair next to the desk in his bedroom.

Sam began to sort out similarities as well as difference of this world while comparing it with his original world.

The major differences which strike out at him is that, this world's Hollywood studios do not have the advantage of controlling the MPAA rating system.

MPAA(motion pictures of association america) which was controlled by major studios in his previous life, who then used this advantage to suppress the non-members studios by allocating different ratings from PG to NR-17 by unfair means.

By not having this advantage, the effect of this also resulted into the big studios becoming conservative in making movies in this world because if they failed in the slightest, than they may have to be relegated into second tier.

In this world, Film companies/studios are graded like sports teams in his previous life, where there can be promotion or relegation.

There are instances where some of the top tier companies have been relegated into tier-two studios.

One of the striking name that stood out for him was Universal pictures which has relegated into tier two studio about ten years ago.

So the overall profits of big studios in this world are also very low compared to his previous world.

But although the profit margins remain low the management remains the same.

And the reason why the old management still ables to run big studios with little profitability is because many Nouveau riche always tries to buy these big production houses to alleviate their social status.

Buying these big production houses is not much difficult for those with money.

As by owing a big studio is often seen as a good way to increase their own value and elevate their status.

In many cases during five year tenure, 2-3 studios owners might have been changed but management might still be the same.

Another reasons for low profits for the big studios is that the current anti-monopoly law prevents them from merging with theatres as well as tv stations unlike his old world.

So the upstream and downstream channels for big studios in this world is disconnected which cannot bring out their full potential.

But Sam knows that in a few years the big studios will pick up the pace, as USSR has also disintegrated from this and world and next few decades will see USA being a sole superpower.

Which in turn while also affect the Hollywood and make it a banner of cultural invasion in all parts of the world.

So he doesn't have much time for leisure, as he has to reach the top or at least gather as much as the resources of the Hollywood in next period of time before the solidification of resources at the top from few studios, just like his old world.

There is also the big studios, having a love-hate relationship with second and third tier studios, where they hate them because they have to share pie of movie.

But at the same time these big studios also work and share risk together so even if two or three movies fail consecutively, they might not be implicated.

It is also because there is no wall street investment backing the film companies in this world because of low profits.

The film studios in this world are divided into 4 tiers, and top five big Studios are Newmoon, Lilitale bros, Rockpebble, mango and Redeem production houses.

There are also about 10-12 second tier studios while there are numerous tier 3 or tier 4 studios opening and closing every year.

Every year about 100-200 new films are screened in the theatres and most of which are co-produced by big studios with the help of second and third tier companies sharing the risks.

The most expensive films, have budget of 20-30 millions while medium budget films have 5-20 millions of investment and low budget films have an investment of a hundred thousand to 5 million of amount.

While he was researching into the Hollywood, his new motorola phone vibrated and a call came through.

The phone screen detected the name Kevin in display and he picked up the call,"hey, how are you doing there buddy?"asked Kevin.

"Nothing much, just trying to write my new script and direct it, also what about you ?".

Kevin replied,"well, I have a viral fever, and at home for two days, but I can't believe you are writing a script mr. Genius?".

Yes, even before Sam transmigrated, the old Sam was also a genius in his college and his graduation movie was also appreciated by whole of University as well as the professors and the dean.

After talking and making some jokes to Kevin, who was his friend/assistant Sam disconnected the call and breathed a sigh.

And he continued with his work of investigation.
