Chapter 21 - CH18: Ambushed by Team Rocket

As the last light of the day slipped beyond the horizon, casting Route 7 in hues of purple and gold, Alex and Drake approached the end of the long, winding path that led to the outskirts of Saffron City. The journey had been filled with challenges, but today, it felt like they were finally making real progress. Abra had begun to bond with Sparkyx and Ironux, and Alex felt a sense of pride and optimism for the future.

However, as they neared the fork in the road that would lead to Saffron's gates, something felt off. The once peaceful path now seemed strangely quiet. The gentle rustle of wild Pokémon in the grass had faded, and there was a tension in the air, as if something—or someone—was watching them.

"Do you feel that?" Drake asked, his voice low as he glanced around, his eyes scanning the shadows along the trail.

Alex nodded, his senses alert. "Yeah. Something's not right."

Without warning, the silence was broken by the sound of footsteps. From the shadows ahead, two figures stepped out, blocking the path. Alex immediately recognized the distinctive black uniforms with the bold red "R" emblazoned on the chest—the unmistakable sign of Team Rocket grunts.

"Well, well," one of the grunts sneered, his voice dripping with malice. "Looks like we've stumbled upon some promising young trainers, huh?"

The second grunt, a woman with short, spiky hair, chuckled darkly. "Not just any trainers. That's the kid with the rare Pokémon, isn't it?" She pointed directly at Alex, her eyes narrowing. "Word on the street is, you've got an Abra and some pretty rare Electric and Steel-types. We'll be taking those off your hands."

Alex's heart pounded, but he didn't back down. His hands balled into fists as he stepped forward, blocking Drake from their line of sight. He'd heard stories about Team Rocket—how they stole Pokémon, extorted trainers, and caused chaos wherever they went. But hearing the stories and facing them in person were two very different things.

"You're not taking anything," Alex said coldly, his voice steady despite the threat. "Sparkyx, Ironux, and Abra are part of my team. If you think I'm just going to hand them over, you've got another thing coming."

Drake stepped up beside him, his expression serious for once. "You really think you can just take our Pokémon? You're messing with the wrong trainers."

The male grunt laughed harshly. "Is that so? You kids think you can stand up to Team Rocket? We'll show you what happens when you get in our way."

Both grunts reached for their Poké Balls, tossing them into the air. In a flash of light, a Golbat and a Raticate appeared on the battlefield, both Pokémon baring their teeth and hissing menacingly.

Alex's pulse quickened, but he remained calm. He reached for his own Poké Balls, releasing Sparkyx and Ironux onto the field. Sparkyx landed with a burst of electricity crackling through its fur, while Ironux stepped forward with its usual calm, imposing presence.

Drake wasn't far behind, releasing his newly-caught Vulpix and Pidgeotto. The air buzzed with anticipation as the two sides faced off, tension crackling like static in the air.

"You ready for this?" Drake asked, his voice steady but determined.

Alex nodded, his eyes locked on the Team Rocket grunts. "Yeah. Let's take them down."

The male grunt snarled, pointing at Alex's Pokémon. "Golbat, hit that Sparkyx with Wing Attack!"

Golbat swooped down with a burst of speed, its wings glowing with power as it dove toward Sparkyx.

"Sparkyx, dodge and use Thunder Wave!" Alex commanded.

Sparkyx darted out of the way just in time, Golbat's wings slicing through the air where it had been moments before. Sparkyx quickly retaliated, unleashing a wave of paralyzing electricity that struck Golbat mid-flight. The bat-like Pokémon screeched as the Thunder Wave took effect, its movements becoming sluggish as the paralysis set in.

"Raticate, use Hyper Fang on Ironux!" the female grunt shouted.

Raticate lunged forward, its sharp teeth glowing dangerously as it aimed for Ironux's body. But Alex knew that Ironux was more than capable of handling the attack.

"Ironux, block it with Iron Defense!" Alex called.

Ironux's metallic body glowed with a bright sheen as it hardened its defenses. Raticate's Hyper Fang struck, but the attack bounced off Ironux's steel-plated armor, leaving the wild rodent Pokémon stunned and momentarily vulnerable.

"Now, use Iron Punch!" Alex commanded.

Ironux responded instantly, swinging its heavy fist toward Raticate. The punch landed with a resounding thud, sending Raticate skidding backward across the ground. The grunt's Pokémon groaned in pain but managed to stay on its feet.

Meanwhile, Drake was locked in his own battle, with Vulpix darting around Raticate's attacks while Pidgeotto swooped down to strike Golbat with gusts of wind. Despite the grunts' aggressiveness, it was clear that Alex and Drake were holding their own.

"Golbat, use Poison Fang!" the male grunt shouted, desperation creeping into his voice as he watched his Pokémon struggle.

But Golbat, still paralyzed from Sparkyx's earlier Thunder Wave, couldn't react fast enough.

"Sparkyx, finish it with Spark!" Alex commanded, his voice filled with determination.

Sparkyx's body crackled with electric energy as it leaped into the air, colliding with Golbat in a flash of sparks. The attack hit hard, sending the paralyzed Golbat crashing to the ground, unable to continue the fight.

Drake wasn't far behind. His Pidgeotto managed to land a critical hit with a powerful Wing Attack, sending the weakened Raticate flying back into the arms of its trainer. The Team Rocket grunts were clearly outmatched, their Pokémon groaning in defeat as they lay on the ground, unable to battle any longer.

The male grunt cursed under his breath as he recalled Golbat. "This isn't over!" he snarled, but the anger in his voice was undermined by the fear that flashed across his face.

The female grunt seemed equally shaken. She returned Raticate to its Poké Ball, glaring at Alex and Drake. "You think you've won? Team Rocket doesn't lose. We'll be back, and next time, you won't be so lucky."

Alex stepped forward, his eyes narrowed. "Who sent you? Why are you targeting me and my Pokémon?"

The male grunt sneered, but there was a flicker of hesitation in his eyes. "You think we're going to tell you anything? You've got rare Pokémon, kid. That's all you need to know. And people like you are exactly the kind of trainers we like to… liberate from their Pokémon."

"Yeah," the female grunt added, crossing her arms. "Especially with Pokémon disappearing after battles these days. Who's going to miss a few extra?"

Alex's blood ran cold at her words. So Team Rocket knew about the disappearing Pokémon, too. It wasn't just a coincidence—they were exploiting the chaos.

Before Alex could press them further, a sharp whistling sound echoed through the air, followed by the rustle of leaves. Both grunts suddenly froze, their eyes widening in fear.

"What was that?" Drake asked, looking around in confusion.

From the shadows, a third figure emerged, cloaked in black and moving with lightning speed. Alex barely had time to register the figure's presence before it darted between him and the Team Rocket grunts, moving with such agility that it seemed like a blur.

In a matter of seconds, the figure had incapacitated both grunts, knocking them to the ground with swift, precise strikes. The grunts groaned in pain, unable to move as the figure stood over them, its face hidden beneath a dark hood.

Alex and Drake stared in shock, unsure of what had just happened.

"Who…?" Alex started to ask, but the figure turned toward him, raising a hand to silence him.

The voice that spoke was calm but firm. "These grunts don't deserve answers. But know this—Team Rocket is involved in something far more dangerous than you realize. Keep your Pokémon safe. They won't stop until they get what they want."

Before Alex or Drake could respond, the figure threw down a small smoke bomb. A thick cloud of smoke enveloped the area, and by the time it cleared, both the mysterious figure and the Team Rocket grunts had vanished.

Drake coughed, waving the smoke away. "What… just happened?"

Alex stared at the empty space where the figure had been, his mind racing. "I don't know," he said quietly. "But whoever that was… they know something about Team Rocket and the disappearing Pokémon. We need to find out more."

Drake nodded, still looking a bit shaken. "Yeah… but first, let's get to Saffron City. I think we're in way over our heads."

As they continued down the path, the weight of what had just happened hung over them. Team Rocket was after Alex's Pokémon, and there was no doubt that they were involved in something much bigger. But the encounter with the mysterious figure had only raised more questions.

What was Team Rocket's real goal? And who was the stranger that had come to their rescue?

One thing was certain—Alex's journey was far from over, and the danger was only growing.

With their journey growing more perilous by the day, Alex and Drake pressed on toward Saffron City, their thoughts weighed down by the recent encounter with Team Rocket and the mysterious figure that had intervened. The sky above had turned a deep shade of purple, with stars beginning to twinkle faintly as night descended over the Kanto region. Despite the darkness, neither trainer was in the mood to stop for the night—they were too close to Saffron, and the events of the evening had given them a sense of urgency.

As they walked in silence for a few minutes, the rush of adrenaline from the battle began to wear off, replaced by a growing sense of unease. Alex couldn't stop thinking about what the female Team Rocket grunt had said—about how Team Rocket was taking advantage of the Pokémon disappearing after battles. What did that mean? Was Team Rocket responsible, or were they merely exploiting the chaos for their own gain? And why were they so focused on rare Pokémon like Abra, Sparkyx, and Ironux?

"You think that guy in the cloak is a friend or foe?" Drake asked, breaking the silence, his voice tense but curious.

Alex shook his head, still trying to piece everything together. "I'm not sure. They didn't seem hostile toward us, but they clearly knew something about Team Rocket—and they didn't stick around to explain anything. All we know is that Team Rocket is involved in something dangerous, and this figure seemed intent on keeping them away from us."

Drake sighed. "I don't like it. It feels like we're getting dragged into something bigger than we realize. First the disappearing Pokémon, now Team Rocket trying to steal yours… It's all connected somehow."

"Yeah, I feel it too," Alex admitted. "And it's only going to get worse before it gets better. That's why we need to get to Saffron City and meet with those researchers Liana mentioned. If anyone knows what's really going on, it's them."

They walked on, the faint glow of the city lights beginning to appear on the horizon. The closer they got to Saffron City, the more Alex's thoughts turned to his team. Sparkyx and Ironux had been incredible during the battle against Team Rocket, and Abra—though still distant—was starting to fit into the group. The bond that had begun forming between his Pokémon earlier had given Alex hope that Abra would come around, but now, with Team Rocket targeting them, the stakes felt higher.

As if sensing his thoughts, Sparkyx trotted up beside Alex, letting out a soft chirp. Its fur still crackled with residual electricity from the earlier fight, but its bright eyes were full of energy and determination.

"Thanks, Sparkyx," Alex said, giving his Electric-type a pat on the head. "You did great back there."

Sparkyx barked happily, clearly proud of its performance. Behind them, Ironux followed in its usual steady, silent manner, its red eyes scanning the surroundings, always on alert.

Alex glanced at Abra's Poké Ball, clipped to his belt. He knew that Abra had a long way to go before it would be ready for battles, but seeing Sparkyx and Ironux defend it from the wild Fearow earlier had been a turning point. Abra had seen firsthand what it meant to be part of a team, and Alex hoped that with time, it would learn to trust him and the others.

"I'll need to work with Abra more," Alex muttered to himself, his mind already planning the next steps for training. "Once we're settled in Saffron, we'll focus on getting it comfortable with using its psychic abilities. No rush, just small steps."

Drake overheard him and grinned. "That Abra's going to be amazing once it evolves. Psychic-types are no joke, and with Ironux and Sparkyx on your side, you're building a pretty balanced team."

Alex smiled, appreciating the encouragement. "Yeah, I think so too. But first, we need to get past all this chaos. If Team Rocket's after us now, who knows what else we'll have to deal with."

As they continued walking, the gates of Saffron City came into view. The city loomed large ahead, its buildings rising high against the darkening sky, and the streets bustling with the last of the day's activity. Even at night, the city was alive with energy, and it was clear that Alex and Drake were entering a place where they would have plenty of opportunities to learn more about what was going on in the region.

As they neared the city limits, Alex felt a strange mix of excitement and anxiety. The answers they were searching for could be somewhere in Saffron, but so too could more dangers. Team Rocket was out there, lurking in the shadows, and Alex knew they wouldn't give up easily. But he wasn't about to let that stop him.

They reached the gates, the glow of the city lights washing over them as they stepped into the busy streets of Saffron. The city's towering buildings stretched out in every direction, and the hum of activity buzzed around them. People moved quickly through the streets, some heading home after a long day, others just beginning their night.

Drake looked around, clearly impressed. "Wow, Saffron City's even bigger than I thought. This place is massive."

Alex nodded, scanning the area. "Yeah, it is. But we've got a mission here. First, we need to find the Pokémon Center, get some rest, and then head to the research facility in the morning. Liana said they might have information about the disappearing Pokémon, so that's our next step."

As they made their way through the bustling city, Alex felt the weight of the day's events settle on his shoulders. They had faced off against Team Rocket, uncovered hints of a much larger conspiracy, and found themselves on the trail of something dangerous and unknown. But despite the fear and uncertainty, Alex felt a sense of purpose. He wasn't just battling for Gym Badges anymore—he was fighting to protect his team and uncover the truth behind the strange occurrences in the Kanto region.

And with his team by his side, he knew they could face whatever challenges lay ahead.

As they approached the Pokémon Center, Alex glanced down at his belt where Abra's Poké Ball rested. There was still a long road ahead, but for the first time since Abra had joined his team, Alex felt that they were finally starting to move in the right direction. Trust would come with time, and once Abra was ready, they would be unstoppable.

Together, they would uncover the truth, defeat Team Rocket, and protect the Pokémon of Kanto from whatever darkness was lurking in the shadows.

Tomorrow, their journey would continue. But tonight, they would rest, prepare, and get ready for the battles to come.
