Chapter 22 - CH19: The Professor’s Revelation

The next morning dawned over Saffron City, its tall skyscrapers catching the early rays of the sun. The bustling metropolis, alive with the sound of traffic and the occasional Pokémon cry, filled Alex with a renewed sense of purpose. Today, he and Drake were determined to get answers. Their encounter with Team Rocket had shown them just how dangerous things had become, and they couldn't afford to be passive anymore.

The two trainers left the Pokémon Center early, Sparkyx trotting beside Alex while Drake's Pidgeotto perched on his shoulder, its feathers ruffling in the morning breeze. The streets were already full of people going about their day, but despite the hustle and bustle, there was a strange sense of calm as they walked through the city, knowing they were getting closer to uncovering the mystery of the disappearing Pokémon.

"So, where exactly are we headed?" Drake asked, glancing around at the unfamiliar city.

"Liana mentioned a research lab somewhere near the western part of the city," Alex replied, checking the map on his Pokégear. "Apparently, some professors and researchers have been investigating strange occurrences like the ones we've been seeing. I'm hoping they'll have some leads on what's causing the disappearances."

Drake nodded, adjusting his backpack. "Sounds like a good plan. I just hope they know something useful. If Team Rocket's involved, it can't be good."

As they moved through the crowded streets, Alex couldn't help but feel a nagging sense of urgency. The encounter with the Team Rocket grunts the day before had rattled him more than he cared to admit. The way they had targeted his rare Pokémon—and hinted at their involvement in the larger issue of the disappearing Pokémon—suggested that this was more than just petty theft. There was a bigger, more sinister plot at play, and Alex had a bad feeling that they were only scratching the surface.

After a short walk, they arrived at the research facility, a large, modern building with sleek architecture and an air of quiet importance. The entrance was bustling with people in lab coats, trainers bringing in Pokémon for analysis, and various researchers deep in conversation. The building's exterior was adorned with a large sign that read Saffron Pokémon Research Institute.

"This looks like the place," Alex said, stepping through the automatic doors with Drake following close behind.

The inside of the facility was just as impressive as the outside. Rows of high-tech equipment lined the walls, and several researchers were hard at work at various stations, analyzing data on computer screens, studying Pokémon, and discussing their findings in hushed voices. The air hummed with the quiet buzz of scientific inquiry, but there was also an underlying tension that Alex couldn't ignore.

As they approached the front desk, a young woman in a lab coat looked up, smiling politely.

"Hello! How can I help you two today?" she asked, her hands resting on the computer keyboard.

"We're here to speak with someone about the disappearing Pokémon," Alex said, his voice steady but firm. "We've had encounters with Team Rocket, and we believe there might be a connection between the disappearances and their activities."

The receptionist's expression shifted slightly, her smile fading as she looked more serious. "Disappearing Pokémon? You're not the first trainers to come here asking about that. Professor Willow has been researching the phenomenon for some time now. I'll see if he's available."

She picked up the phone, speaking briefly with someone on the other end before nodding and gesturing for Alex and Drake to follow. "Professor Willow is in his lab. I'll take you there."

Alex exchanged a glance with Drake as they followed the receptionist down a long hallway, the sterile white walls and polished floors amplifying the sound of their footsteps. The deeper they went into the building, the more Alex's curiosity grew. He had a feeling that whatever they were about to learn, it wouldn't be good.

At the end of the hall, they were led into a spacious lab filled with all sorts of equipment—microscopes, monitors, and complex machinery that Alex didn't even recognize. Standing at one of the large screens was an older man with gray hair and sharp, intelligent eyes. He turned as they entered, his expression calm but focused.

"Ah, welcome," the man said, walking over to greet them. "I'm Professor Willow. I hear you're interested in the recent Pokémon disappearances?"

"Yes," Alex said, stepping forward. "I'm Alex, and this is Drake. We've seen it firsthand. One of the Gym Leader Liana's Pokémon vanished after a battle, and we've heard rumors about more Pokémon disappearing across the region. Team Rocket seems to know something about it too."

Professor Willow's expression darkened at the mention of Team Rocket. "Yes, I've been following those rumors closely. The phenomenon you've described is becoming more widespread, and the pattern is deeply troubling."

"What do you know about it?" Drake asked, leaning forward, his curiosity piqued.

Willow gestured to a large screen displaying a map of the Kanto region. Several red dots marked locations across the map, forming a disturbing pattern. "We've been tracking the locations where these disappearances have occurred. At first, we thought it was random—individual Pokémon going missing here and there. But over the last few weeks, the pattern has intensified. Entire teams of Pokémon have vanished after fainting in battles, never to be seen again."

"That's exactly what we saw at the Gym," Alex said, remembering how Liana's Weepinbell had disappeared in the blink of an eye. "What's causing it?"

Professor Willow's eyes narrowed. "We believe there's something far darker at work here. The disappearances aren't just random events—they're being orchestrated. There's a pattern in the energy signatures we've detected at the sites of the disappearances. It's not natural, and it's not caused by humans alone. We've started to suspect that a Legendary Pokémon is involved."

Alex's heart skipped a beat at the word Legendary. He had heard stories of powerful Legendary Pokémon throughout the world—beings with incredible abilities that could shape the world itself. But the idea that one of them could be stealing other Pokémon for some dark purpose was something he hadn't considered.

"A Legendary Pokémon?" Drake asked, his eyes wide. "Why would a Legendary be involved in something like this?"

Willow crossed his arms, his face grim. "That's the part we don't fully understand yet. But there's evidence to suggest that this Pokémon is manipulating space itself, creating some kind of void or rift where the stolen Pokémon are being sent. We think it's using these Pokémon to grow stronger, but we don't know why or what its end goal is."

Alex's mind raced. A Legendary Pokémon stealing other Pokémon for its own purposes—this was far worse than anything he had imagined. "Do you have any idea which Legendary it might be?"

Willow nodded slowly. "We've narrowed it down based on the energy readings we've recorded. We believe it could be Darkrai."

"Darkrai?" Alex repeated, his voice filled with both awe and fear. He had heard the legends of Darkrai—a Dark-type Pokémon that was said to cause nightmares and manipulate the dreams of those it encountered. But stealing Pokémon? That was something entirely different.

"Darkrai is known for its ability to influence the dream world, but we believe it has somehow gained the power to manipulate reality as well," Willow explained. "It's creating rifts in space, pulling Pokémon into some sort of void. Once they're taken, they're never seen again."

"But why would Darkrai do that?" Drake asked, his voice incredulous. "What's it trying to accomplish?"

"We're not sure," Willow admitted, his expression troubled. "But whatever it is, it's dangerous. Darkrai isn't acting alone—it's using Team Rocket to gather specific Pokémon, particularly rare or powerful ones. They're helping it carry out its plan, though whether they fully understand what they're doing is unclear."

Alex's stomach churned as the pieces started to fall into place. Team Rocket had been targeting his rare Pokémon—Abra, Sparkyx, Ironux—because they were powerful, and they likely had the potential to aid Darkrai in whatever dark scheme it was orchestrating. He couldn't help but wonder how many other trainers had been targeted, how many Pokémon had already been lost to this terrifying force.

"We have to stop them," Alex said, his voice filled with determination. "We can't let Darkrai keep taking Pokémon like this."

Willow nodded, though his expression was grave. "It won't be easy. Darkrai is immensely powerful, and it's using Team Rocket to shield itself from direct confrontation. But you're right—we need to stop it before more Pokémon are taken. The best course of action is to track down where these rifts are being created and find a way to stop them."

Drake stepped forward, his fists clenched. "We're in. Whatever it takes. If Team Rocket and Darkrai are working together, we have to take them down."

Alex nodded in agreement. "We'll do whatever we can to help. This has to stop."

Willow looked at the two trainers, a flicker of hope in his eyes. "I'll provide you with all the information we have so far. But be careful—Darkrai and Team Rocket won't hesitate to target you now that you know the truth."

As they left the lab, the weight of what they had learned settled heavily on Alex's shoulders. The mystery of the disappearing Pokémon wasn't just about random thefts—it was part of a much larger, darker plan involving one of the most feared Legendary Pokémon in existence.

And now, Alex knew he and his team were part of the fight to stop it.

The battle against Darkrai had only just begun.
