Chapter 12 - CH9: A New Rival

The sun was still rising over the rugged landscape when Alex heard footsteps approaching from behind. He had been walking for a few hours, enjoying the peace and quiet as he and his Pokémon made their way toward the next town. Sparkyx was bounding ahead, its tail flicking with small sparks, while Ironux followed in its usual stoic silence. It had been a productive few days of training, and Alex felt confident that they were ready for the next Gym battle.

But now, as the sound of footsteps grew louder, Alex glanced over his shoulder to see a boy about his age jogging up the path toward him. The boy had a wild, eager look in his eyes, his brown hair messy and windblown, and he wore a bright red jacket that flapped in the breeze. A Poké Ball dangled from his belt, bouncing as he ran to catch up.

"Hey!" the boy called out, waving energetically. "Wait up!"

Alex slowed his pace, curious about the newcomer. He had encountered a few trainers along the way, but this boy seemed different—there was an excitement about him that caught Alex's attention.

The boy finally caught up, panting slightly from the run but grinning from ear to ear. "Hey, you're a trainer, right? I saw your Sparkyx back there—pretty cool Pokémon you've got."

Alex gave a small nod. "Yeah, I'm a trainer. Name's Alex."

"Nice to meet you!" the boy replied, thrusting out his hand for a shake. "I'm Drake. I've been looking for other trainers to battle. You know, to test my skills. And you seem like the perfect challenge!"

Alex raised an eyebrow. This kid was full of energy, that was for sure. "You want to battle me?"

Drake nodded enthusiastically. "Yeah! I've been traveling around the Kanto region, trying to get stronger, but it's hard to find good opponents out here in the wild. And you look like someone who knows what they're doing."

Alex hesitated for a moment. He hadn't planned on a trainer battle, but then again, it could be a good way to test how well Sparkyx and Ironux were doing after their recent training.

"All right," Alex said, nodding. "Let's do it. A quick battle."

Drake's face lit up with excitement, and he quickly stepped back, pulling a Poké Ball from his belt. "Awesome! You won't regret it. Let's see what you've got."

They moved to a clear patch of ground, giving themselves plenty of space for the battle. Sparkyx hopped into position in front of Alex, its tail already sparking in anticipation. Ironux stood by, ready to step in if needed, but for now, Alex wanted to see how Sparkyx would handle the challenge.

Drake grinned and tossed his Poké Ball into the air. "Go, Rhyhorn!"

A large, gray Rhyhorn materialized on the battlefield with a loud roar, its rocky hide gleaming in the morning light. The ground trembled slightly as the Rock- and Ground-type Pokémon stomped its feet, clearly ready for battle.

Alex quickly assessed the situation. Rhyhorn was strong, but its typing made it vulnerable to some of Sparkyx's new moves. This would be a good test for Sparkyx's Thunder.

"All right, Sparkyx," Alex called out, "let's start with Thunder!"

Sparkyx crouched down, its blue markings glowing brightly as it began to gather electric energy. The air around the battlefield crackled with static as Sparkyx charged up, and Alex could feel the tension building.

"Rhyhorn, use Bulldoze!" Drake shouted.

Rhyhorn snorted and charged forward, lowering its head as it barreled toward Sparkyx with incredible speed. The ground shook beneath its feet as it prepared to strike, but Sparkyx was ready.

With a burst of energy, Sparkyx unleashed a massive bolt of lightning, sending a powerful Thunder attack straight at Rhyhorn. The bolt struck the charging Rhyhorn head-on, lighting up the battlefield with a brilliant flash. The force of the attack sent Rhyhorn skidding to a stop, its rock-hard body crackling with leftover static.

Despite its natural resistance to Electric-type moves, the power of Sparkyx's Thunder was undeniable. Rhyhorn let out a pained groan and stumbled backward, clearly weakened by the attack.

"Great job, Sparkyx!" Alex called, feeling a surge of pride for his partner.

Drake, however, wasn't ready to give up. "Come on, Rhyhorn! You've got this! Use Horn Attack!"

Rhyhorn shook off the static and charged forward again, its sharp horn gleaming as it aimed straight for Sparkyx. But Sparkyx was faster.

"Dodge it with Quick Attack!" Alex ordered.

In a blur of yellow and blue, Sparkyx darted out of the way just as Rhyhorn's horn struck the ground where it had been standing. The little electric Pokémon moved so fast that it left afterimages in its wake, and it quickly repositioned itself behind Rhyhorn, ready for another strike.

"Now, Spark!" Alex shouted.

Sparkyx's body crackled with electricity as it launched itself forward, colliding with Rhyhorn's side and sending a jolt of electric energy through the Rock-type's body. The impact knocked Rhyhorn off balance, and it staggered before collapsing to the ground, too exhausted to continue the fight.

The referee, if there had been one, would have declared the battle over. But even without one, it was clear—Rhyhorn was unable to battle.

Drake stood there, staring at his fallen Pokémon in disbelief. He had been so full of energy and confidence at the start, but now that his Rhyhorn had been defeated, his expression shifted to one of shock and frustration.

Alex stepped forward, returning Sparkyx to his side. "Good battle," he said, extending his hand to Drake. "You gave it your all."

Drake blinked, shaking himself out of his daze before nodding. "Yeah… yeah, thanks. You're really good. I thought I had a chance, but your Sparkyx is amazing."

Alex smiled. "Thanks. You and your Rhyhorn put up a good fight too. You just need more practice."

Drake's expression shifted again, this time to something more determined. "You're right. I do need more practice." He paused for a moment, looking thoughtful. Then, suddenly, his eyes lit up again. "Hey, how about this—why don't you help me train? You clearly know what you're doing, and I could learn a lot from someone like you."

Alex's smile faded slightly, and he shook his head. "Sorry, Drake, but I can't. I've got my own journey to focus on, and I'm heading to the next Gym. I don't have time to take on another trainer."

Drake's face fell, and for a moment, he looked genuinely disappointed. "Oh… right, of course. I get it. You've got your own goals."

Alex nodded, feeling a bit bad for turning the boy down, but he had to stay focused. He couldn't afford to slow down or get distracted. The Kanye region's Gym Leaders were no joke, and he needed to keep moving if he wanted to stay ahead.

"Good luck with your training, though," Alex said, trying to offer some encouragement. "I'm sure you'll get stronger if you keep working at it."

Drake smiled weakly. "Yeah, thanks. I'll keep trying."

With that, Alex turned and started walking again, Sparkyx and Ironux by his side. He figured that was the end of the encounter and that Drake would go his own way.

However, after a few minutes, Alex glanced over his shoulder and noticed something strange. Drake was still following him, walking a short distance behind and trying—unsuccessfully—to look casual about it.

Alex sighed and slowed his pace, eventually stopping and turning to face Drake.

"Are you seriously following me?" Alex asked, crossing his arms.

Drake grinned sheepishly. "I mean… yeah, kinda. Look, I get that you don't want to help train me, but I thought maybe if I stuck around and watched, I could pick up some tips. You know, learn by observation."

Alex frowned. "That's not really how it works. Besides, I told you I have my own journey to focus on."

"I know, I know," Drake said quickly, holding up his hands in a defensive gesture. "But I'm not asking for a ton of help. Just let me tag along for a little while, and I'll stay out of your way. Promise."

Alex considered the offer for a moment. Drake seemed like a nice enough guy, and he clearly had a lot of enthusiasm for training. But Alex wasn't sure if he wanted to take on the responsibility of someone following him around, especially with all the challenges he was sure to face in the coming days.

But then again, maybe having someone else around wouldn't be the worst thing in the world. He had traveled alone for most of his journey so far, and while he had his Pokémon, it might be nice to have some human company for a change.

"Fine," Alex said after a long pause. "You can follow me, but don't expect me to slow down or give you a ton of help. I've got my own stuff to focus on."

Drake's face lit up again, his grin returning in full force. "Deal! Thanks, Alex, you won't regret it!"

With that, Drake fell into step beside Alex, grinning from ear to ear as if he had just won a second battle. Sparkyx glanced back at the new companion, letting out a curious chirp before continuing to trot ahead, its tail sparking playfully. Ironux, as usual, stayed silent, its red eyes scanning the path ahead, unbothered by Drake's presence.

Alex let out a small sigh, wondering if he had made the right decision. Drake seemed harmless enough, but his boundless energy might become a distraction. Still, there was no going back now, and Alex had more pressing things to focus on than worrying about the eager new companion walking beside him.

The path ahead wound through rocky terrain, and the tall cliffs and jagged boulders cast long shadows over the trail. Alex felt the weight of the journey pressing down on him again. The upcoming Gym battle loomed in his mind—he knew it would be tougher than the last, and they needed to stay sharp. Sparkyx and Ironux had made great progress, but every battle was different, and he needed to be prepared for whatever challenge the next Gym Leader would throw at them.

"So," Drake said, breaking the silence, "where are you heading next? There's another Gym, right?"

Alex nodded. "Yeah, I'm heading to the next town. It's supposed to have a Gym Leader who specializes in Grass-types. That's where I'm planning to get my second badge."

Drake's eyes widened in excitement. "Grass-types, huh? That's awesome! You've already got a Rock-type badge under your belt, and now you're going for Grass. I heard the Gym Leader there is really tough, though. Lots of trainers have tried and failed to get that badge."

Alex shrugged. "I'm not too worried. Sparkyx and Ironux are ready for it. We've been training hard, and we've got a plan."

Drake looked impressed. "You really seem to have everything figured out. I mean, you've already got that whole battle strategy down and everything. I usually just try to hit hard and hope for the best."

Alex smirked. "That's probably why you lost back there."

Drake chuckled. "Yeah, I guess I still have a lot to learn. But hey, I'll figure it out eventually. That's why I'm following you, after all!"

"Just don't expect me to do all the work for you," Alex said, his tone only half-joking. "You've got to put in the effort if you want to get stronger."

Drake nodded eagerly. "Oh, I will, I will! I'm just hoping to pick up some tips by watching how you train and battle. I mean, that Thunder attack from your Sparkyx? That was incredible! I've never seen anything like it."

Alex glanced down at Sparkyx, who was still trotting ahead, its tail flicking with small sparks. "Yeah, Sparkyx worked hard to learn that move. But it didn't happen overnight. It took a lot of training, and a lot of patience."

Drake's eyes were wide with admiration. "I can tell. You and your Pokémon really trust each other. That's what I want, too. I want to get that close to my team. I mean, I like my Rhyhorn, but I don't think we've got that same connection yet."

"It takes time," Alex said. "You have to spend time with them, train with them, and push each other. That's how you build trust. It's not just about battling—it's about the bond you share with your Pokémon."

Drake nodded, his expression thoughtful. "That makes sense. I've been so focused on getting stronger that I guess I haven't really taken the time to think about my relationship with my Pokémon. Maybe that's why I keep losing."

Alex didn't respond right away, but he could see the gears turning in Drake's mind. Despite his initial cockiness, Drake was clearly willing to learn and improve, and that earned Alex's respect. Maybe he wasn't such a bad guy to have tagging along after all.

The day wore on as they continued down the winding path, the rocky cliffs gradually giving way to more open fields. The terrain was less treacherous now, with patches of tall grass swaying in the gentle breeze. Wild Pokémon occasionally popped up in the distance, but none approached as Alex and Drake made their way toward the next town.

As they walked, Drake kept asking questions—about battles, about training techniques, and about the different types of Pokémon that Alex had encountered so far. Alex answered as best he could, though he kept his focus on their journey and the battles that lay ahead.

Eventually, they reached a small stream running alongside the path. The water was clear and cool, and the sound of it trickling over the rocks was soothing. Alex stopped to take a break, crouching down by the water to fill his canteen. Sparkyx and Ironux took the opportunity to rest as well, with Sparkyx dipping its paw into the water curiously.

"So, how did you end up in the Kanto region?" Drake asked, sitting down on a nearby rock. "Did you always plan on becoming a Pokémon trainer?"

Alex hesitated for a moment, unsure of how much to share. His arrival in this world had been anything but normal, and explaining the strange circumstances that had led him here might raise more questions than he was ready to answer.

"I've always wanted to be a trainer," Alex said, choosing his words carefully. "I wanted to see the world, meet new Pokémon, and take on challenges. When I got the chance to come here, I knew I had to go all in."

Drake nodded, seemingly satisfied with the answer. "That's cool. I guess I'm still figuring out what I want to do. I love battling, but I'm not sure if I want to be a Gym Leader or just travel around and see what happens. Right now, I just want to get stronger."

Alex took a sip of water and stood up, brushing the dirt off his pants. "You'll figure it out. Everyone has their own path. The important thing is that you keep pushing yourself."

Drake smiled. "Yeah, you're right."

As they prepared to move on, Alex noticed a rustling sound coming from the tall grass nearby. His instincts kicked in, and he quickly motioned for Sparkyx and Ironux to get ready.

"Stay alert," Alex said, scanning the area. "We might have company."

Drake stood up, his hand hovering over his Poké Ball. "What is it? Wild Pokémon?"

Before Alex could respond, a pair of wild Nidoran—one male, one female—emerged from the tall grass, their eyes locked on the trainers with curious intensity. The Nidoran's ears twitched as they slowly approached, seemingly interested in the newcomers.

Alex grinned. "Looks like we've got a chance to test out some more moves. You ready, Sparkyx?"

Sparkyx chirped in excitement, its fur crackling with electricity.

"Let's do this!" Drake said, his excitement bubbling up again as he reached for his Poké Ball. "Rhyhorn, let's show them what we've got!"

As the wild Nidoran closed in, Alex felt a surge of anticipation. Another battle, another chance to grow stronger. And maybe, just maybe, this was the start of something more than just a rivalry between him and Drake—something that could help them both become the trainers they aspired to be.
