Chapter 14 - Chapter 11: Preparing for the Grass Gym

The sun had risen early, casting a warm light over the small town as Alex and Drake sat outside on a bench, overlooking the peaceful street that led toward the town's Pokémon Gym. The air was cool, and the morning was quiet, with only a few townspeople moving about, preparing for their day. It was a stark contrast to the intensity that both trainers knew was waiting for them in the next Gym challenge.

After spending the previous evening helping Ellie and her mother, Alex and Drake had returned to the Pokémon Center for some much-needed rest. Now, with the Gym battle looming, they needed to focus. The next Gym Leader specialized in Grass-types, and both trainers knew that their strategies would need to be spot-on if they wanted to win their next badge.

Alex sat with a thoughtful expression, looking down at Sparkyx and Ironux, who were resting near his feet. Sparkyx was idly flicking its tail, sending small sparks into the air, while Ironux sat still, its red eyes glowing faintly in the morning light. Both of his Pokémon had improved significantly through their training, but Grass-types would present new challenges. Sparkyx's electric attacks wouldn't be particularly effective against Grass-types, and while Ironux's Steel typing would give him some resistance, Alex needed to think carefully about how to approach the upcoming battle.

Drake, sitting beside Alex, was equally lost in thought. His Rhyhorn had power, but Grass-types were its biggest weakness. If he wasn't careful, his Rhyhorn could be taken down quickly by a well-placed Grass move. He had been chatting nonstop the day before, but now that they were so close to the next battle, his usual energy had been replaced by a more serious, focused attitude.

"Okay," Drake said, breaking the silence as he pulled out a notebook and a pen. "We need to come up with some solid strategies before we head into that Gym. We know the Leader's using Grass-types, which means Rhyhorn's at a big disadvantage."

Alex nodded, crossing his arms as he thought about it. "Yeah, Rhyhorn's in a tough spot. Grass-type moves like Razor Leaf and Energy Ball will do a lot of damage, and Grass-types tend to have decent defenses too. You might want to avoid using Rhyhorn as your lead."

Drake sighed, scratching his head. "Yeah, you're right. Rhyhorn's got strength and durability, but it's just too risky to put him up against Grass-types. I guess I could use my Pidgeotto instead. Flying-types have an advantage over Grass-types, right?"

Alex nodded, his eyes lighting up. "Yeah, Flying-type moves are super effective against Grass-types. Pidgeotto could be a great choice to lead with. It's fast, and if you focus on using moves like Gust and Wing Attack, you'll be able to deal some solid damage before the Leader's Pokémon can react."

Drake smiled, clearly relieved. "Good idea! I'll lead with Pidgeotto and save Rhyhorn for later, in case I need a heavy hitter. But what about you? Sparkyx is an Electric-type—won't that be a problem against Grass-types?"

Alex leaned back on the bench, thinking it over. "Yeah, Grass-types resist Electric moves, so Sparkyx's Thunder and Spark won't be as effective. But Sparkyx has speed on its side. If I can use its Quick Attack to get in and out quickly, and maybe even throw in some status moves like Thunder Wave, I can disrupt the Gym Leader's strategy. The key will be to stay on the offensive and not let their Pokémon set up too many defensive moves like Leech Seed."

Drake nodded in agreement. "Yeah, that sounds smart. If you keep the pressure on, you might be able to keep their Pokémon off-balance. And what about Ironux? Steel-types are resistant to Grass, right?"

Alex smiled. "Exactly. Ironux will be my tank in this battle. Its Steel typing gives it resistance to Grass-type moves, and its strength means it can take a lot of hits. I'm thinking of leading with Ironux to wear down the Gym Leader's Pokémon and save Sparkyx for later when I need speed. I'll use Iron Punch to deal damage and keep the battle at a close range. Plus, if I need to, I can use Iron Defense to boost its durability even more."

Drake grinned, his usual enthusiasm returning. "Man, you've really thought this through, huh? I wish I was as good at coming up with strategies as you."

Alex chuckled. "It's all about knowing your strengths and weaknesses. You've got a strong team—you just need to think about how to use them in the right situations."

Drake nodded, scribbling down a few notes in his notebook. "So, here's what I'm thinking: I'll lead with Pidgeotto, like we said, and focus on using Flying-type moves to take out the Gym Leader's first Pokémon. Then, if Pidgeotto gets knocked out, I'll bring in Rhyhorn as a last resort. Maybe I can use Rock-type moves to defend myself if I'm in a pinch."

Alex considered it for a moment. "That could work. But be careful with Rhyhorn—if the Gym Leader's Pokémon know any strong Grass moves, Rhyhorn might not last long. You might want to catch another Pokémon that isn't weak to Grass-types, just in case."

Drake frowned, tapping his pen against the notebook. "Yeah, I've been thinking about that. Maybe I'll try catching a Fire-type or Bug-type before we challenge the Gym. Those types would give me an edge against Grass-types."

Alex nodded approvingly. "That's a good idea. Fire-type moves are super effective against Grass-types, and Bug-types can deal some solid damage too. If you can find a decent Fire-type around here, that'll definitely help balance your team."

Drake looked excited at the prospect. "I'll head out later today and see if I can find a Fire-type or Bug-type in the wild. I know there are some Vulpix and Growlithe in the area, so maybe I'll get lucky."

Alex smiled. "Sounds like a plan. And while you're doing that, I'll keep working on Sparkyx's Thunder and Ironux's speed. I want to make sure they're in peak condition for the Gym battle."

The two trainers sat in silence for a moment, both of them thinking through their strategies. The Gym battle was no small challenge, and they both knew that it would test everything they had learned so far. But there was also a sense of excitement—the chance to prove themselves and earn another badge was motivating.

Drake stood up, stretching and looking out over the town. "I'm going to head out now and see if I can catch a Fire-type. Hopefully, I'll be back before sundown."

Alex nodded. "Good luck. I'll stick around here and get some more training in. We'll meet back at the Pokémon Center later to go over our final plans."

Drake gave a thumbs-up before jogging off, his usual energy returning as he disappeared down the street. Alex watched him go, a small smile on his face. Drake's enthusiasm was contagious, and despite his initial reluctance to let the boy tag along, Alex was starting to enjoy having him around. They had different styles, but Drake's passion for becoming a better trainer was undeniable.

With Drake off to catch a new Pokémon, Alex turned his attention back to his own training. He called Sparkyx and Ironux to their feet, ready to begin working on their battle readiness for the Gym challenge ahead.

"Sparkyx, let's focus on perfecting your Quick Attack and Thunder. We need to make sure you can move in and out quickly while still dealing strong damage," Alex said, watching as Sparkyx's tail flicked with excitement.

Sparkyx chirped in response, its electric-blue markings glowing as it prepared for the training session.

"And Ironux," Alex continued, turning to his steel companion, "we're going to work on your endurance and your speed. I want you to be able to handle multiple opponents while still staying strong."

Ironux gave a slow nod, its red eyes focused and determined.

The rest of the morning was spent honing Sparkyx's and Ironux's skills. Sparkyx practiced its Quick Attack, darting in and out of mock battles with blinding speed, while Ironux focused on building its defenses, using Iron Defense to fortify itself against incoming attacks. Alex kept a close eye on both of them, offering encouragement and feedback as they worked.

As the sun climbed higher in the sky, Alex felt a growing sense of confidence. Sparkyx and Ironux were ready. They had trained hard, and now they were stronger than ever before. The Gym battle wouldn't be easy, but with the right strategy and a little bit of luck, they would be able to pull through.

By the time Drake returned, looking triumphant with a new Vulpix by his side, Alex knew that they were as prepared as they could be.

"You ready?" Drake asked, his grin wide as he gave Vulpix a proud pat on the head. "I think we've got this Gym challenge in the bag!"

Alex smiled, feeling the same surge of excitement. "Yeah. Let's do this."

With their strategies in place and their teams ready, Alex and Drake made their way toward the Gym, the thrill of the challenge ahead driving them forward. The Grass-type Gym Leader wouldn't know what hit them.
