Chapter 99 - Fractured Unity

The Crumbling Alliance

The council chamber in the Mondell estate was far less ornate than the Holy Kingdom's, but the tension within was just as palpable. The leaders of the allied kingdoms sat around a polished oak table, their voices raised in frustration. Leon sat at the head, his usually composed face taut with exhaustion and unease.

The Arabic princess, draped in a flowing crimson robe adorned with gold sigils, leaned forward with a scowl. "Your Highness Mondell, how long do you intend to excuse Atlas De Luna's reckless behavior? He acts without consulting us, yet you ask us to trust your leadership?"

The Eastern prince, his expression calm but his tone sharp, added, "The alliance depends on unity. Atlas's actions at the border have jeopardized our strategy. If we fracture now, Fleur will exploit our discord."

Leon swallowed hard, his fingers clutching the armrests of his chair. "I understand your concerns, Your Highnesses, but Atlas acted to protect us all. The Fleur Empire's movements—"

"—are no excuse for insubordination," the princess interrupted, her voice slicing through the air. "Or do you mean to say he considers himself above us all? Above you?"

The accusation stung, and Leon's chest tightened. Atlas's unilateral actions had thrown their plans into disarray, and now, Leon found himself cornered, defending choices he hadn't made.

Tensions Boil Over

Bjorn, who stood silently behind Leon, stepped forward. His presence was a reassuring anchor amidst the storm. "Enough," he said, his deep voice commanding attention. "Atlas may have acted rashly, but casting blame does nothing to strengthen our cause."

The princess raised an eyebrow, clearly unimpressed. "And who are you to speak of strengthening alliances, warrior? The last I checked, you were not the one leading this coalition."

Bjorn's jaw tightened, but before he could respond, the Eastern prince held up a hand. "Let us not turn this into a war of words," he said evenly. "The real question is: what will be done to repair the damage caused?"

All eyes turned to Leon, who felt the weight of their expectations crushing him. His thoughts churned, grappling with the enormity of the situation.

"I will speak to Atlas personally," he said finally, his voice steady despite the storm within him. "And I will ensure his actions align with the alliance moving forward."

The princess smirked, though there was no humor in it. "If you can even find him."

Lysander's Calculations

Far from the discord of the allies, Prince Lysander of Fleur reclined in his ornate war tent. Maps and documents were spread across a gilded table, illuminated by the soft glow of enchanted lanterns. His emerald eyes scanned the reports, a satisfied smirk playing on his lips.

"Let them bicker," he said, his voice dripping with amusement. "The cracks are already showing."

One of his advisors, a wiry man with sharp features, stepped forward. "The spies report that the Eastern prince and the Arabic princess grow more frustrated with Mondell's leadership. If we press further, the alliance may crumble entirely."

Lysander nodded, his fingers tapping rhythmically on the table. "Good. Their unity is their strength, and their strength is their weakness. Divide them, and they fall."

He leaned back, his gaze drifting toward the enchanted map on the wall. "And when they fall, the relic will be ours."

Leon's Silent Resolve

As the council dispersed, the room fell silent, save for the soft rustle of papers as Leon gathered his notes. Bjorn approached, his expression a mix of concern and support.

"Leon," he said softly, placing a hand on his shoulder. "You're doing the best you can. They'll see that eventually."

Leon's grip on the papers tightened. "Will they?" he murmured, his voice barely audible. "I can't even control Atlas, and now the alliance is unraveling. What kind of leader am I?"

Bjorn knelt beside him, forcing Leon to meet his gaze. "You're the kind of leader who doesn't give up, even when the odds are against you. You've faced worse, Leon. You'll find a way through this."

Leon's chest ached with unspoken emotions. He wanted to believe Bjorn's words, but doubt clung to him like a shadow.

"I have to," he whispered, more to himself than anyone else. "For Eli. For all of us."

As Bjorn left the room, Leon turned to the window, his gaze fixed on the distant horizon. Somewhere out there, Atlas was fighting his own battles. Leon could only hope that when the time came, they would face the final challenge together.
