Chapter 1 - Day 1

Day 1

Rookie Officer and The Guardian Devil

He jumped up and down my bed continuously as he tried to shake me out of my sleep. There was no mistaking the energetic yellow haired nuisance that was my partner for anyone else.

"Lauren, get up! We're gonna be late." He shouted.

My consciousness struggled to rise out of my dazed state. My body felt heavy, and it wasn't just because of the fourteen year old demon that was jumping on my bed.

"Evan please…." I begged. "Five more minutes."

"You said that an hour ago." He said with a pleading voice.

When I opened my eyes, my retinas were struck by a blinding sunlight. I immediately shut my eyes as I sprang up from my bed. My bedroom curtains were wide open, letting in the morning sunlight. There were clothes everywhere, most of which belonged to Evan. In layman's terms my room was an absolute mess. I rummaged through the pile of clothes searching for a watch to check the time.

"Huh!?" I yelped.

The time was 08h45. Today was supposed to be the first day at my new job at the Celestial Intelligence Bureau, a police force that handles cases involving celestials. Be it murder, robberies, demon bounty hunting, if it was a crime that involved a celestial, the CIB would handle it. Today marked my first day there. I was chosen by the CIB commanding officer. An archangel named Mary. I remember what she said word for word as she asked me to join.

"Your guardian devil looks interesting. Why don't the two of you come work with us in the CIB?"

By "Guardian Devil" she meant Evan. I accepted her offer, hoping that I could help make this celestial infested world a better place. Truthfully speaking I was excited. Now that excitement was gonna be short lived.

"We don't have much time! Hurry up and get ready!" I told Evan.

"I'm done getting ready."

He was already out of his pyjamas. It seemed as if he got himself ready while I was happily dozing away.

"Traitor." I murmured.

"You're wasting time missy."

He had a point. I scurried to the bathroom and washed my face. Being as late as I was I didn't have time to do much else. I got myself a clean set of clothes, changed into them in a hurry and headed back to the bedroom.

"Alright I'm ready! Let's go!"

Evan grabbed me by my figure and hoisted me over his shoulder. I was riding piggyback as he jumped out of the front door. We found ourselves in the corridor of our thirty storey apartment building. Evan dashed towards the stairwell and leaped off hurdling towards the ground floor with me clinging desperately on his back.

He grabbed a staircase railing as he jumped from floor to floor. When we reached the ground floor we caused a slight commotion. A few of the other residents got startled as we landed.

"S-sorry…." Evan murmured.

We dashed past the lobby where I tossed my keys to the receptionist. Surprisingly he caught the keys easily, like he was expecting me to throw them. The streets of New York bustled in their wake. Long line sky scrapers stretched towards the heavens.

Evan suddenly wrapped my legs around his waist. My heart sank at the implications. He had no intentions of hailing a cab, nor did he plan to have us take the subway. From his palms emerged two blades that looked like mediaeval swords with chains hooked on each hilt.

"No. No, Evan don't."

He snickered, "Oh come on. It's the fastest way there."

"It's also the quickest way to give me motion sickness!!!!"

He couldn't even wait for me to finish my sentence. Taking to the streets without even giving me time to prepare. He tossed his chain bound blades towards the nearest building. He hoisted us to the air using his chains as a swing.

From one skyscraper to the next, he continued this process of swinging from building to building with me riding on his back. I don't know when but somewhere down the line I found myself screaming, I was so completely terrified that my eyes pried themselves shut. All I could feel was the urban breeze smashing against my face and my hair fluttering in the air.

And just as I predicted, my stomach started turning in on itself. My motion sickness had started taking root.

"I'm gonna be sick." I garbled.

"Oh calm down, we're almost there."

"I'll puke long before we get there!"

"You're a big girl now so try to hold it in.*

"Easier said than done!"

Our back and forth continued as we swung across the city. Within a few minutes we finally arrived at the agency. A tall, wide tower that was decorated with a gigantic sign board that read "CIB". The time on my watch told me that it was 08h55. I don't know how but Evan made it so weren't late but instead we were early. I shut my eyes the entire time so I didn't really know how he managed to pull it off.

He set me down, my head was still spinning from the whole ordeal.

"We're here." He announced.

We'd arrived at the place where I'd start my job as an officer for the CIB. The lobby was hustling and bustling with the sounds of radios accompanied by the barking of orders from every which person within eye sight.

One such order was directed at me, from a bulky figure wearing a general's hat. He spoke with confidence and purpose.

"Who are you?" he barked.

I jumped out of my skin. Evan took the initiative to answer the question for me. "That's Lauren, I'm Evan. We're new highers here."

"Since when did the commander let kids become officers?"

"I'm not a kid. At least I don't think I am." Evan said, pointing at me.

"Is that right wise guy? Then I hope you're aware of the newbies' initiation test, right?"

"Initiation test?" he echoed.

I had completely forgotten because I was late. But now that I was thinking about it there was no way they'd let mortals deal with cases involving super strong celestials. Of course there'd be a test.
