Chapter 40: Aftermath of Destruction
The morning sun, pale and indifferent, cast a bleak light over the devastation. Smoke still rose in ghostly wisps from the battlefield, blending into the gray dawn sky as if the heavens themselves were in mourning. The air was heavy with the stench of blood, sweat, and death. Each breath Alex took seemed to bring with it the memories of the screams, the clash of steel, the sound of bones breaking and lives ending.
She stood, numb, just outside the medic tent. She couldn't face going in yet, not after what she had seen, not after what she had led them into. Her mind raced, going over each decision, each order she had given, trying to find the moment where everything had gone wrong. But there was no single moment. The battle had been chaos from the start, a storm of blood and violence that had swallowed them whole.
