Chapter 46: Death Comes Knocking
Alex's POV
The world around Alex blurred as she watched Ethan's face, his breaths shallow and labored. They had only just returned to their makeshift camp, their assault plan barely set in motion, when he collapsed. Now, he lay on the thin mat under the shelter they had hastily thrown together, his skin pale and drenched with sweat. This wasn't like the other times he'd been injured—she could feel it in the frantic beat of her heart, the ominous dread clawing its way up her throat.
A low murmur of voices outside the tent filtered in, anxious whispers from those who were waiting, watching, their faith in her shaken by the realization that even Ethan—their strongest, their most indestructible—was vulnerable.
