Chapter 34 - Chapter 34: Chains of Command and Shadows of the Forest

The slime rose up from the ground, glowing with a faint red aura. The slime saw Liora and immediately tried to run away, but one word from Liora held it in place, almost as if chains had caught onto it and prevented it from escaping.

"Don't. Move," Liora commanded, and the slime froze in place, its body betraying its mind's actions.

'Woah! This is amazing, and sort of terrifying,' Liora thought, smiling eerily as she stepped closer to the slime.

'Now it's time to see what happened to you. System, show me its status,' Liora commanded, and the system popped up in front of her, showing the changes in the slime.

[Name: (Blessed-Blood Contracted) Slime Lv1]

[Strength: 10] [Defense: 10]

[Agility: 10] [Intelligence: 10]

[Skills]

[Progenitor Split]

Liora frowned upon seeing its pathetic stats; all of its stats reached ten, which meant the original stats of the slime were all one. A truly pathetic creature she had no use for.

[Progenitor Split: A unique ability granted to creatures of gelatinous nature, allowing them to reproduce asexually by splitting their bodies.]

'This is interesting, but also a bit weird. I really don't have use for a monster like this,' Liora thought as she sighed and closed the window panel. Not only was the slime weak, but its skill was also useless.

Sure, maybe she could use its skill to create copies of itself and repeatedly kill them, but the EXP gain from them was already low, and that would be a waste of time.

'Let's try something fun.'

Liora looked at the last slime in the distance, happily minding its business. She wanted to see the limitations of how much she could force her will onto the slime and determine if this skill would become useful to her in the future.

"Go, kill it," Liora commanded her enslaved slime, pointing at the last slime with her finger.

The slime tried to resist, doing its best to refuse her commands. Liora furrowed her eyebrows in annoyance, but to the slime, her image was horrifying. A sharp pain coursed through its gelatinous body, and its body moved against its will, charging at the last slime.

The last slime turned around, but before it could react, the enslaved slime tackled it hard, piercing through its weak body and emerging on the other side.

[Liora has slain a Slime! +1 Exp(x10) +2 Beast Points(x10)]

"Hahaha!" Liora laughed, clutching her face with her hand, enjoying the power she possessed over the slime and making it kill its own kind.

"Return to me. You deserve a little reward," Liora called for the slime, and it reluctantly returned to her. If it tried to refuse, the pain would return and only increase if Liora became upset.

That combined with the 10x effect would make the slime's life a living hell. The slime stood in front of Liora, awaiting further orders, not knowing that the next order would be its very last.

"Hold still," Liora said as she slowly drew her sword from its sheath, a dark glint in her eyes as a cruel grin formed on her face.

Without warning, Liora crashed her sword into the slime, splitting it in half and killing it.

[Liora has slain a Slime! +1 Exp(x10) +2 Beast Points(x10)]

Liora stared at the remains of the slime for a few moments before putting the sword back into its sheath.

'Well, this area is useless now. There won't be any more slimes to hunt, as there is none to let them reproduce anymore,' Liora thought as she began to walk back home.

In a dense forest surrounded by many trees, the sky was almost completely sealed off, providing a creepy and chilling atmosphere.

Chris sat by a campfire in these woods. He had been walking the entire day and needed a place to camp for the night. Soon, he discovered a forest in the distance and immediately chose this as his spot.

A few meters away from him lay his tent, which he had also set up, the inside of which was very spacious. Next to him leaned Jade's Sword, which Chris had continued to study for a bit.

Before Chris had set up camp, he had faced many monsters, mostly bears and wild boars. Using Jade's Sword for the first time, he found its sharpness quite amazing.

Even with his weak strength, the sword cut deep into the wounds of monsters. And with the help of his Skeletons, they took care of any monsters they faced along the way.

The sword had a strange feel to it. As Chris continued to use it in battle, his swordsmanship skills began to improve slightly. He didn't understand the concept of channeling magic into the blade yet, as it was still very new to him.

After finally finding a good spot to set up camp in the woods, Chris was already at level 20. He had unlocked the system shop and accumulated a lot of Soul Points and Stat Points.

Chris also experimented with the [Shop] feature in his system panel and bought a few neat items:

[Minor Explosive Paper Talisman: An item enchanted with special magical properties that unleash a small explosion onto your enemies. Magic is required to be poured into the paper for the effects to happen. Be cautious.]

[Low Magic Recovery Potion: A potion that restores a small amount of MP upon consumption.]

[Enhanced Night Vision Potion: A potion that enables the user to see in the dark much better than before. Lasts for 30 minutes.]

Chris now had three Minor Explosive Paper Talismans, two Low Magic Recovery Potions, and one Enhanced Night Vision Potion.

These were the items Chris was going to be using on his journey. They were useful, but one thing saddened Chris: the fact that his [Blessing of the Death God] Talent didn't affect items in particular.

If it did, these items would have been much stronger and lasted longer.

Chris glanced at Jade's Sword and recalled a small experiment he had carried out a few minutes prior. When he had first received the sword from his mother, a notification window popped up.

This only happened if the weapon he got had some sort of magical property, making it far more valuable than normal weapons. It meant Jade's Sword must have come from a dungeon since dungeons were massive labyrinths filled with monsters and treasures.

This made sense as he remembered his mother being an adventurer years ago before she had conceived him. Chris yawned as exhaustion crept into his mind and limbs, signaling it was time for bed.

'Let's quickly distribute these before I go to sleep.'

As Chris naturally defeated monsters, they dropped Souls for him, which he happily devoured. His stats increased, and so did his combat ability. But there was one problem he hadn't expected.

[Soul Consumption: Maximum amount of souls absorbed, currently full.]

[Chris will have to wait a certain time period to be able to absorb souls again. The ability to see souls will also be removed temporarily as a protective measure to protect the host from craving souls.]

[To be able to absorb more souls, the Soul Consumption Skill must be leveled up.]

His [Soul Consumption] Skill had limits and a cooldown. It was a major letdown for Chris, as this Skill was incredibly overpowered.

He tried to ask the system to level up his [Soul Consumption] Skill, but the required amount baffled him.

[Upgrading Soul Consumption to Level 2 will cost 45000 Soul Points.]

The system's response shocked him for a few seconds. He should have expected this—[Soul Consumption] was already a very powerful Skill at Level 1, so upgrading it would naturally be expensive.

Chris decided to focus on spending his Stat Points and deal with the [Soul Consumption] Skill later.

He distributed 40 Stat Points to all his stats, leaving him with only 20 Points, which he then added to Strength.

Chris reviewed the updated stats and nodded in satisfaction. Each point felt thoughtfully allocated to balance his strengths and ensure he could handle tougher monsters ahead.

Just as he was about to enter his tent, a thought struck him. 'If I go to sleep, then there's a chance i could be attacked by some monsters.'

He pondered for a moment, before using his [Summon Lesser Skeleton] Skill, and summoning 3 of his Skeletons to protect him while he sleeps.

'Just to be safe.' He thought as he entered the tent and went to sleep, his Skeletons guarding the tent around them.
