Chapter 8 - MY AILING WIFE

John kept at his lovely wife as she struggled for her dear life. The ambulance was at a supersonic speed to catch up with time in an attempt to save a life. Soraya was in a sleeping position, taking the central part of the ambulance. To the right, there was a nurse, dressed in a white lab coat. The nurse was busy providing first aid service and keenly observing her. John, occupying the furthest left, sat in disbelief, sympathizing with the situation. Although things looked impossible, he still had some hope.

John had serious regrets haunting him. He regretted having involved the wife in the pregnancy testing process as that was the main cause of the condition. The man cried silently on seeing her spouse lying there unconsciously. John was a very strong man, but could not bear this one. His newly married wife! Not fair at all. He wished the whole scenario could be a mere dream. But he just had to accept the reality as it came.

As the ambulance arrived at the health facility, two nurses on duty ran to come and pick up the patient. The patient was taken to the main ward. It was an emergency case, and it had to be handled swiftly. The facility valued life more than money, though it was very expensive. They had to initiate the treatment procedure then negotiate for payment later. But that was their strategy to over quote the medical bill. John was afraid of how expensive the bill would be but just had to cooperate as he really valued, his wife so much.

John sat at the reception in a great somber. He had to facilitate the payment of the necessary fee. John had a comprehensive insurance cover for his family, a cover that was to help him in covering part of the medical bill. However, the health cover did not protect the assurer in totality. There was some bill which the health insurance cover did not cater for. For example, the laboratory testing fee and admission fee were paid separately by the patient. That meant that he had to dig deep into his pocket to cater for the extra costs. Also, money for food was paid separately.

Later in the day, John requested to see his wife in the ward room. He was allowed in to see his wife and have a word of encouragement. He went and sat on the bed where his wife was lying, still unconscious. He called the wife thrice by her name but did not respond. He became very worried and had to confirm if she was still breathing. The patient had been placed on a water drip as she seemed dehydrated, and was very still. John carefully placed his hand at her spouse's chest to confirm if it was beating. He then sighed in relief, an indication that she was still alive.

It was two hours past noon and John felt that his wife must be feeling hungry. He had to go and buy food for her. But as a man, he had little knowledge of what might benefit the patient at that particular time. Chips were her favorite meal, but then it would not be recommended considering her health. Also, how could she consume the food at that state of a comma? John had to call a nurse and have consultations. The nurse advised him to buy just fruit.

John walked out of the facility. He was going to find some fruit for his wife. He walked through the market, looking for the best fruits. He specifically chose ripe bananas as he was convinced that it would work best for her. When he finally arrived, he handed over the fruits to the nurse who had been assigned to her spouse. The nurse took them and placed them in a drawer next to the patient.

John, now still sitting in the waiting bay, became impatient. He was worried that maybe the situation was worsening, but the hospital management was not communicating. He wanted to know if the health facility was not able to deal with the situation and to admit her and let her be transferred to another, better hospital. He called the nurse to interrogate her. He wanted to know what exactly the wife was suffering from. The nurse kept on telling him that the wife was responding well to medication and that he should be patient. It was evening and night was approaching. He went to see his wife and found her struggling in pain. What a misfortune that had befallen him?

John had to remain there the whole night looking after his wife. He was the only one she could rely on. Also, it was a way of showing love to the wife. He sat next to the bed where his wife was lying throughout the night. The nurse on duty kept coming after every three hours to confirm how the patient was flying. It was almost midnight when John began to have hope. He had been sitting all through in a sad state. But at midnight, he had to put a smile on his face. The wife regained her consciousness, struggled to sit on her own. He had to help her sit properly.

Soraya was very surprised when she came back to her senses. A drip on her hand! No, something must have been wrong somewhere. She could not remember the event that led her there. She looked at her husband and asked him where they were. John could not even utter a word. He was not bothered to answer his wife's interrogative questions. For him, he had extreme joy in his heart and felt contended. But he realized that he had a role to engage the wife in a conversation to keep her busy. John majorly encouraged the wife that soon she would have recovered, and they would have to go back home.

The following day, Soraya was fully recovered. She was able to walk by herself. The medical experts had to advise the couple on healthy living styles and mental health issues before they were allowed to proceed home. John had learned it the hard way and vowed to be careful when dealing with his wife.
