Chapter 13 - PROBLEMATIC NIGHT

The day had been tough for John. Evening came and he had to go back home. His head was almost bursting out because of the heavyweight issues he had. He thought of going back home but realized that he wouldn't get the required peace of mind. The only way he valued his peace of mind was through compromising his judgment. John was a habitual drunkard, making it part and parcel of him. He took his phone and called his longtime friend called Kevo. He responded promptly, and they agreed to meet at Green Martingale bar where they had to spend their time drinking alcohol.

Kevo and John had been great friends since childhood. They were too close to each other such that nothing could separate them. They had not been together for quite some time since they differed on a party some time back. The reason for their disagreement was over a lady who initially belonged to John, but Kevo snatched him away from the friend (By that time, John was heavily drunk). The two were meeting for the first time since the difference between them occurred.

The lady Kevo had snatched from the friend at the party glued herself to him, eventually becoming his wife. After the party ended, Praxedis could not agree to leave Kevo. All the attempts by Kevo to see her off were not fruitless. She forcefully followed Kevo, claiming that she would not take the risk of leaving him. Kevo had no option but to take the girl home. That is how they got married.

The two friends met at an agreed place at around 7pm, although John came slightly earlier than the other. They preferred to have their alcohol served at an open place. But before they could make an order, they engaged in a constructive conversation. A conversation that Kevo initiated so as to find time and apologize before the friend. The conversation was positive about strengthening their relationship.

They made an order of six bottles of bear. The drink had an average amount of alcohol content. They sat there sipping as they wrote their stories. The rate at which John was drinking alcohol was alarming. He could consume one bottle of the bear in just three minutes. This made him drunk too fast. Roasted meat was also ordered. They stayed there till midnight, trying to commemorate their childhood life.

At midnight, the hotel was to be closed. This meant that they had no option but to leave. By that time, they were heavily taken by alcohol. They could not walk upright. They staggered to the main road where they were to find a motorcycle. They had not made up their minds to go back home. They were to go to another bar, a few kilometers from where they were.

They boarded a motorcycle which dropped them there. They had an entrance and sat down. They made a similar order as before. By this time, they had drunk to their capacity. John, now actively talking, invited a brown-skinned lady to their table. The lady cooperated, came and sat next to him. John could not hesitate. He started sweet-talking the lady. Both, having compromised minds, agreed to book a room to spend a night. But this was not totally free. John was to facilitate the purchase of a smartphone for the lady (who he had just known a few hours ago).

The lady was sharp upstairs. She demanded the money for the money and was given it. She later excused herself as if she was going to the washroom and that is how she vanished. John had to wait longer for her but could not come back. Later he realized that the lady had conned her. That was the worst thing he could have expected. After giving her twenty thousand shillings? No, she must be serious. John could not allow him to lose. He had to find the lady through all means.

John stood up and staggered to the reception. There he asked about the whereabouts of the lady in question. He did not even know the name of the lady he was looking for. He just had to make a vivid description of her. The receptionist directed him to where she resided. That was the worst thing the receptionist did. He remained there, determined to break the door and get access. He forcefully exerted pressure on the door, threatening to tear it apart.

The threatened lady could not keep quiet. She screamed so loudly, attracting the attention of the neighbors, who ran to the scene to intervene. She had branded them as thieves. The angry neighbors came to the scene, armed to the tooth. They carried stones, machetes and other blunt objects. John was found at the door struggling to break it. The angrily mob could not spare him. He was stoned before he could escape into the hideout.

Meanwhile, Kevo was among the crowd. The crowd could not notice that they were together with the victim. He had to try and hide his identity as life would be in danger. When things subsided, Kevo had to look for a friend. He tried calling him, but he was unreachable. It was too difficult for him. His efforts to find the friend were fruitless. This was very sad for the friend.

John was rescued by a philanthropist the following day. He was taken to the nearest hospital where he was to be attended to. His health situation worsened, and he had to be moved to a special care unit. The patient was so sick, he could not even blink an eye. All this time, the wife had not yet known the whereabouts of her husband. Although she had been worried all through, she was convinced that the husband was safe.

Kevo had many concerns. He woke up very early in the morning to go and inform John's wife about what had transpired the previous day. Kevo knew that a problem shared is half solved. So, he arrived very early in the morning and was warmly welcomed. He had no time to waste. He broke the news immediately and left. Now, Soraya remained shedding tears.
