An entire week had already passed since our heated encounter. From that time when everything almost spiraled out of control, I haven't once regretted my decision of stepping in. As much as I would love to please her in that moment, I'm sure that she'd taunt herself as soon as the deed is done.
I parked my vehicle in the workplace's underground car park and take the lift up to the second floor. After booking in for work, I sat down at my cubicle. As the computer powered up, I quickly scanned through the pile of papers that greeted me at entrance.
The phone on the desk rang twice; I picked the transceiver up and placed it against my ear. "Good morning, Mr. Gonzalez," the friendly voice from the manager's assistant greeted. "Good morning Tabitha, how are you doing this beautiful morning?" I asked with a smile of my own. "I am doing very good Mr. Gonzalez, thanks for asking. I'm calling to inform you that Mr. Harrison wants to see you in his office," she acknowledged me. "Please tell Mr. Harrison that I'll be there in a little bit," with that being said the call quickly came to an end.
I put the papers as much in order as I can at a quick pace. It's the same as always, administration statements, new orders that needs to be placed (for the shop on the first floor) and then I have to work out the staff's payment expenses seeing how that's due by the end of this week. There's clearly not a loss for work at this business. Slowly I stand up from the desk and made my way towards Mr. Harrison's office. If the man of the house invites you to his party you don't ask questions, you just do as you're told.
I rap on the door and enter as soon as his deep voice approved. "Please come on in Kyle, take a seat," he pointed towards the row of chairs as he said this. "As you must have heard a trade that specializes in architecture is currently building a Harrison Gold department store in the Strand," he started right off the back not wasting a second. "Congratulations Sir, that's wonderful news," I responded triumphantly. "I want you to go as a building inspector and see that everything progresses smoothly. Take that fiancé of yours along for the ride and make a short vacation out of the trip. It would do the both of you good," he ended.
If I must be extremely honest, I didn't see that one coming. "When do you want us to deport?" I questioned. "As soon as possible," he responded matter of factly. "I have no objections and I don't think that Geni would have a problem either. What about the mountain of paperwork on my desk?" He swiped it away with the back of his hand. "Tabitha…" he called out. She entered in a rush. "Yes, Sir." "Mr. Gonzalez has some other errands to run would you be a dear and see to his paperwork until he returns to work?" She nodded and assured us that it wouldn't be a problem.
She's a widow with ten cats, apart from her feline companions, not much else is waiting for her at home. I smiled kindly at the elderly lady. He opened up his drawer and retrieved a brown envelope. "Here," he said as he gave it to me. "This would be enough to deck all expenses: Transportation, accommodation and such. I'll double your salary. I hope you don't mind me paying it in to your bank account first thing tomorrow morning. Unfortunately I don't have enough on me at the moment, or else I would have paid you on hand." I assured him that it's all in order.
I looked down at the smart watch around my wrist, as I wait for the robot to turn green. The school where Geni teaches at, is another four blocks away. I have no clue how I'm to inform her about the short vacation but hopefully she'll have no objections. I really don't like the idea of going alone. It's a quarter to ten on Monday morning and the road isn't busy in the slightest. One would never guess how tragically the picture change when rush hour rolls in.
Short before long I reached the primary school, glad to see that it's currently recess. I entered through the gates and reached her sitting form. Gently I lay my chin upon the crown of her head and wrap my arms around her waist. A smile tugged lightly at the corners of her mouth. "Aren't you supposed to be at work, Mr. Gonzalez?" She questioned playfully. As I sit down beside my beautiful companion, I answered: "Mr. Harrison is building a new department store and he asked me to pose as a building inspector." I responded enthusiastically.
She looks up at me a broad smile plastered upon her lips. "That's wonderful Kyle!" "I want you to join me. I'll be gone for an entire week." I try my luck as I avert her stare, looking down at my feet. "I don't know Kyle, this is all so suddenly. What about my work?" She looks out over the playground. Some children are swinging on the monkey bars, while others chase one another up and down the jungle gym. Others that aren't doing to great with socializing are either on the swings, the slide, the seesaw or building sandcastles out of turned out buckets.
As I too lost myself in the serenity of the moment I pleaded one last time, "The Strand is such a magical place, I really don't want to go without you honey." Her head snapped into my direction, "The Strand?" I nodded in conformation. My face beamed up as a nod came from her direction. I have no idea what just happened. I'm just glad that she agreed to join me. I will make sure that this would be a trip that neither of us would forget in the long run.
