(Y/n)'s POV
I couldn't sleep very well, and if I'm usually bad tempered on the mornings, imagine how I would be with less sleep than usual, I kept turning and twitching on my sleep, slept for a few hours, and then went back to twitching and turning, but can you blame me? It was really exciting to think what they would teach me in a magical school.
So, with that thought, and knowing I wouldn't really get any more sleep, I just got up, put on my robes, and went to the first class of the day, I guess you can say, to add on top of all of that, I was nervous and didn't want to get lost, because with a school so big, and knowing how distracted I get, it was obvious I would get lost, and just as I said, it was around 5:30 when I left the common room, it was nearly 7 when I found the classroom, but at least I wouldn't get lost anymore, I guess....
—————————————————————————————————————
When I got there, I was kinda surprised to see Hermione there, sitting alone. I got up to her, forgetting my sleep because, for some weird reason, even though I got very little hours of sleep, I didn't feel tired at all.
"Hermione? Why are you here this early?" I asked, with my quiet voice.
"Oh! (Y/n)! Well, Obviously, I wanted to get to class early, I can't afford to be late on the first day out of all of them, but I can see that you thought the same as me, seeing you as you are the second to get here." Said Hermione, with a proud smile, and a proud posture, with her arms crossed.
"Oh, well, actually, I couldn't sleep very well because I was really excited, so I just got up really early and went looking for the classroom, I knew I would get lost so I left at around five thirty." I said, giggling a bit about it.
"That's... uh, really early, did you really get lost?"
"Yeah, I tend to get distracted easily, and this whole school is so full of interesting things that it was bound to happen I guess." I said, without really thinking about it.
"Hm, maybe we could go together to classes? That way you wouldn't get lost" She said.
"Really? I thought about asking you yesterday, but... I got nervous and didn't, we could, um, sit together, i-if you'd like?" I asked with shyness, I don't really know why I was nervous about asking her, I guess you can blame it on never having a friend before.
"That would be fantastic! Also, you don't have to get nervous around me, I mean, we're friends, right? That's what friends usually do, or at least that's what I've heard, I would love to sit beside you." She said, and as she did, I sat right next to her.
We talked about a few things before I noticed a cat with eyes similar to Professor McGonagall, was standing on what I assume was her desk..
"Hey Hermione, weren't there some wizards and witches who could turn themselves into animals? Because that cat's eyes look eerily similar to Professor McGonagall's eyes" I said, while pointing to the cat.
"Yes, If I remember correctly, those with that ability were called Animagus, and they have to perform a rigurous step by step ritual" As expected of Hermione, she knew the answer immediately.
I nodded to her, and as I did that, the cat on the table jumped, and transformed into a bigger form, which turned out to be Professor McGonagall.
I was shocked and amazed, I looked to my right and saw that Hermione was with the same expression, and before we got the chance to say anything, Professor McGonagall said.
"Very well you two, I can see you have been reading books that are far beyond what you should be reading, so I congratulate you, but please, keep it a secret, I don't want the surprise to be spoiled for those who come late to class" She said with a small grin.
We nodded, and chatted away until the classroom started to fill little by little, with two spots missing, I whispered to Hermione.
"Aw man, it seems Harry and Ron slept a bit more than they should've"
"Well, it's their own fault, they should be more responsible" Said Hermione with that bossy tone of hers.
"Yeah, but maybe I should've woken them up? I don't know..." I said, thinking back on what I could've done or said.
It was already past the time of the start of the class, and those two walked in, looking rather messy.
"We made it, can you imagine the look on McGonagall's face if we were late?" Said Ron, I grimaced a bit, because just when Ron finished his sentence, Professor McGonagall jumped from her desk in her cat form and transformed into her human form, shocking both Ron and Harry, there were a few seconds of silence, and Ron said.
"That was bloody brilliant"
"Well thank you for that assessment Mr. Weasly, perhaps it would be more useful if I were to transfigure Mr Potter and yourself into a pocket watch, then maybe one of you would be on time." Said Professor McGonagall.
"We got lost" Said Harry.
"Well, Mr (L/n) got lost too, but he woke up earlier than most to make up for it, then perhaps transfiguring one of you into a map would be better, at least you don't need one to find your seats." And with that, those two sat, and Professor McGonagall gave the intro to the class.
"Transfiguration is some of the most complex and dangerous magic you will learn at Hogwarts, anyone messing around in my class will leave and not come back."
The class was.... interesting, though, I guess my excitement got the better of me assuming we would see how to transform us into animals, I got Hermione to ask that, but Professor McGonagall said it was material we would see in more advanced years, if we even got to see it at all.
McGonagall tried to make us turn a match into a needle, Hermione got really far into it, and made the match pointy and silver, I tried really hard, and made the match pointy, and there were few streaks of silver around it, although i was nowhere near Hermione's level, Professor McGonagall gave her a smile and she gave me a reassuring nod.
———————————————————————————————————————
Some time passed, and it was time we got to the class I was least excited about, but at least I didn't get lost thanks to Hermione.
Professor Snape was... interesting, to say the least, he passed the roll, and obviously passed through Harry's name, and paused, said something I can't really remember, then passed through mine, and he stopped, just like in Harry's case, I thought he would say something snarky like he has said with the others, but he didn't, and maybe only I noticed, but it was like one of the corners of his mouth threatened to... smile? After that, he gave the intro to the class, and spoke in a whisper.
"You are here to learn the subtle science and exact art of potion making, as there is little foolish wand-waving here, many of you will hardly believe this is magic. I don't expect you will really understand the beauty of the softly simmering cauldron with its shimmering fumes, the delicate power of liquids that creep through human veins, bewitching the mind, ensnaring the senses... I can teach you how to bottle fame, brew glory, even stopper death, if you aren't as big a bunch of dunderheads as I usually have to teach."
Honestly, I got lost between all of what he said, mom taught me all she could about potions before I started the term, and because of that, I got a little oversaturated with potions, not because mom is a bad teacher, but mainly because of the opposite, she gets... too excited sometimes.
I looked to my side and Hermione looked really excited, so at least one of us would enjoy the class.
I got scared when suddenly, Professor Snape yelled.
"Potter!" He was to my right, and he also got scared "What would I get if I added powdered root of asphodel to an infusion of wormwood?"
Oh, that one's easy, I guess mom really knows her stuff, to know what Professor Snape would ask for first years.
Hermione's hand shot up into the air, I guess she knew the answer too, but that was obvious, she looks like she knows all the answers, in a good way.
"I don't know, sir" Said Harry.
"Clearly, fame isn't everything... Let's try again, Potter, where would you look if I told you to find me a bezoar?"
Oh, mom got it right again, with everything she tried to get into my head, I'm surprised I can even remember these answers.
Hermione got her hand up again, stretching it higher than before.
"I don't know, sir." Said Harry, I started to feel bad for him, it was obvious Professor Snape was targeting him for some odd reason.
"Thought you wouldn't open a book before coming, eh, Potter?" Said Snape
"What is the difference, Potter, between monkshood and wolfsbane?"
Hermione stood up, with her hand still in the air.
"I don't know sir, I think Hermione does, though, why don't you try her?" Said Harry, which was... bad, because at that answer, Snape chose a new target.
"Sit down" He said to Hermione "Since you're so eager, Potter, let's ask someone else."
"(L/n)! Same questions"
"O-oh, um...." I said, well, almost whispered, I looked to Hermione, and she reassured me with a nod, as if she expected me to know the answers.
"W-well, um, I think that... uh, well, if you put together asphodel and wormwood you would get the Draught of Living Death, a sleep potion, um, the bezoar comes from the stomach of a goat, a-and, monkshood and w-wolfsbane are the same plant. If I remember co-correctly, sir." I said, with my voice going quieter with each word, but because of the silence of the dungeon, my voice was heard.
"Well... it seems at least one Gryffindor has a bit of brains... Well? Why aren't you all copying that down?" Said Professor Snape.
Over the noise of everyone writing it down, he also said.
"And a point will be taken from Gryffindor House for your cheek, Potter, be grateful that (L/n) saved you from losing more points"
Things went kinda downhill from that point, he spent the whole class praising the Slytherins, and Neville didn't really help in that matter, melting Seamus's cauldron and Professor Snape insulting him.
———————————————————————————————————————
Time passed and the class ended, with Neville going to the Hospital wing, and we all went to the Great Hall to eat.
We had our first flying lessons in the afternoon, and Hermione looked really nervous, reading as much as she could about flying and such, I guess being such a reader for learning makes you nervous when it's the practical learning kind of class, I tried to comfort her and say that everything would be all right but I was kinda nervous myself.
Suddenly, birds were coming through the roof, delivering letters and such to students, I got one from my parents, asking how it has been and such, the usual worrying parents kind of letter I suppose, and I thought to make one at the end of the day.
I was sitting next to Hermione, with Harry in front of me, and Neville got a weird package.
"It's a Remembrall! Gran knows I forget things, this tells you if there's something you've forgotten to do. Look, you hold it tight like this and if it turns red, oh..." The ball got red.
"Um, I guess it's not really practical is it? You won't remember what you forgot" I said, and we all laughed.
"Hey Ron" Harry said, and because me and Hermione were in front of him, we were able to hear him. "Somebody broke into gringotts, listen"
"Believed to be the work of dark wizards or witches unknown gringotts' goblins won't acknowledge the break, and insist nothing was taken, but the vault in question, number 713, was in fact emptied that very same day... Odd, that's the vault Hagrid and I went into."
———————————————————————————————————————
Time passed and we were in the courtyard, or at least one of them, and Madam Hooch arrived, she had hawk-like eyes, which made me think she maybe was like Professor McGonagall, before I could even muster the courage to ask her something, she said.
"Welcome to your first flying lesson, well? What are you waiting for? Everyone step up to the left side of their broomstick, come on now, hurry up"
I looked at Hermione, and she was a nervous mess, to say the least, or at least that's what her face showed.
"Stick your right hand to the broom, and say Up!" Said Madam Hooch
Everyone started saying it, except me, and almost instantly, Harry's broom went up to his hand, followed by Draco, Ron's broom went up and hit him in the nose, which was funny, because it was something my parents didn't get to teach me, I was nervous it wouldn't go well for me, but after seeing everyone else except those two's broom went up, I started saying it too.
It took a while, but at least it went up and got into my hand after a few minutes. Hermione, on the other hand, was having a more difficult time, and it was visibly frustrating her.
"Ugh! This stupid thing, why won't it come to my hand?!" Said Hermione, with an angry tone.
"D-dont worry Hermione, not everyone gets it first try, look at me, it took me a while but I got it, I'm sure you'll get it in no time" I tried to say, but it was futile, she was fuming, and it was kinda funny to see.
Madam Hooch told us to mount it, and when she whistled, we would kick off from the ground hard, which sounded more easy than what it would be, but before we even got the chance, when Madam Hooch whistled something happened.
"Mr. Longbottom, M-mr. Longbottom! Come back down this instant!" Neville started to fly, obviously not on purpose, and flew a few meters over the air, and against some walls of the castle until he eventually fell off his broom, thankfully, near the ground, but high enough to get some damage.
Madam Hooch approached him, and said.
"Oh oh, dear, broken wrist, everyone is to keep their feet in the ground, while I take Mr. Longbottom to the hospital wing, I see a single broom in the air, and the one riding it while be out of Hogwarts before they can say Quidditch"
While she said all of this, I saw Draco grab Neville's Remembrall, and he said.
"Did you see his face? Maybe if the idiot would've given this a squeeze, he would've remembered to fall in his fat ass" His goons started laughing, and I got mad, but before I could muster up the courage to say something, Harry said.
"Give it here Malfoy" Harry said, with an angry look on his face.
"Yeah, it belongs to Neville, you can't just take it, so you better give it back or...." I said, in a quiet voice.
"Or what? What are you even supposed to do, (L/n)? I'm not scared of a coward like you, and for you, Potter, I'll hide for Longbottom to find. How about on the roof?" Draco said, before I could even come up with something to get back at him, he mounted on his broom and took off.
"What's the matter, Potter? Bit beyond your reach?" He taunted.
Harry went up to mount his broom, but Hermione said.
"Harry, no way, you heard what Madam Hooch said, besides, you don't even know how to fly!" Harry paid him no mind, and still went up "What an idiot"
It seemed like she read my mind or something, because she looked at me, and said.
"I don't suppose you're trying to do the same, (Y/n)?" With that bossy tone of hers, and I just said to her.
"I thought about it, but no, I don't think I'm capable of that, besides, Draco's right, I am a coward" I said, trying to laugh a bit at the end of it.
"Don't overthink what he says, if Harry is an idiot, Draco is an even bigger one." Hermione said, trying to comfort me, it seemed like she saw right through me, not sure how, but maybe I was just simple enough and everyone knew what I thought.
They argued a bit in the air and started a flying chase scene, which ended when Malfoy threw the remembrall to a building where Professor McGonagall was, why? Because when Harry came back with the remembrall, Professor McGonagall came running to get him, me and Hermione thought he was a goner.
———————————————————————————————————————
We thought so, but after an hour or so, news around our friend group started running about Harry Potter being the new Gryffindor's seeker .... whatever that was, I never really paid any attention to what my father said about the game, all I knew was that it involved flying on a broomstick at high speeds, and that didn't look safe at all.
I was with Hermione when she saw Ron and Harry walking by, and approached them, so naturally, I approached them too. Harry was saying that he never played, so he was worried he would suck, when Hermione interrupted them.
"You won't make a fool of yourself, it's in your blood."
They looked at her for a few seconds, and I asked.
"U-um, how do you...?" Before I could finish or she could answer me, she asked us to follow her, when we reached a medal exposition, where apparently, the name of Harry's dad was on, and he was a seeker.
"Harry, you never told me your father was a seeker too!" Said Ron.
"I didn't know..." Said Harry.
And it was then, when I realized why Harry's surname was familiar to me.
"Wait! Harry, your parents' names are James and Lily?" I said.
"Yeah, why?" Harry answered.
"Your parents were friends of MY parents when they were students here in Hogwarts, that explains why your surname was familiar to me, they never even mentioned they had a son" I said, laughing a bit at the coincidence.
His eyes lit up and he said "Really? Do you think they could tell me about them?"
I got excited at the idea of having my first friend come to my house, so I told him "Yeah! You can even come to my house if you'd like, Oh! And of course, you too, Hermione!"
Hermione looked excited to be invited to my house, and Harry somewhat did too, that's when I realized.
"O-oh! You are invited too Ron, i-if you'd like, obviously, I um, I got games and stuff like that" I said, embarrassed because I felt like I left him out a bit.
"Yeah, that'd be fun, we'll have to see in the summer though" He said.
We started to walk and Ron said.
"I'm telling you, it's spooky, she knows more about you than you do!"
"Who doesn't?" Said Harry
"I don't want to sound rude, but, um, how did you exactly know that, Hermione?" I asked
"Well, I explored a bit of the school and looked at the trophy section, his name isn't exactly common" She said.
"Sometimes, it amazes me how good of a memory you have, it's awesome, I wish I was a bit like you on that" I said, with a smile on my face.
Before she could answer me, the stairs started to move, startling all of us.
"What's happening?!" Asked Harry.
"The staircases change, remember?" Hermione said.
"Let's go this way" Harry said.
"Yeah, these stairs make me nervous" I said, and we pushed past a door.
"Does anybody feel like... we shouldn't be here?" Ron asked.
"We're not supposed to be here, this is the third floor, it's forbidden" Said Hermione.
"I think... I think we better leave guys" I said, with nervousness filling my body, as if it knew something bad was going to happen.
"Let's go" Said Harry, we all nodded and turned around, where we found a cat with red eyes.
"It's Filch's cat!" Said Hermione.
"Run!" And before Harry could even finish his sentence, we all set off running as fast as we could, torches were litting up when we passed them, and Harry said.
"Quick! Let's hide through that door!" We approached it "It's locked!"
"Great, we're done for" Said Ron.
I tried to be useful, and took out my wand, did the wand movement and said.
"Alohomora" Quiet as I could, as I usually talked.
We heard a click sound, and the door was unlocked.
"Get in!" Hermione whispered.
We did just that, and Ron said "Alohomora? How did you knew that, (Y/n)?"
"Standard book of spells, chapter seven. Great quick thinking (Y/n), you beat me to it" Hermione said, scolding Ron, and praising me with a smile.
"It's not like it's a competition..." I said, finally relaxing after that tense moment.
We heard Filch talking to his cat, and eventually leaving, and Ron raised his voice.
"He'll think this door is locked"
"Was locked" Said Hermione.
"Uh, weird smell, does anyone else smell that?" I said, while we turned around.
"Wasn't me" Said Ron
"N-no, it smells like... like a zoo" I said
"Uh, guys" Said Harry "I think this door was locked for a good reason"
We looked at where Harry was looking, and I think we all understood what he said, in front of us was a dog, with his size almost touching the ceiling, three heads, and six eyes, looking straight at us, as if he was tasting his first meal in a long time, with drool running through their mouths.
I opened my mouth to scream, just like the others, while my hand was going where I kept my wand again, but Harry thought of something else, and opened the door quickly, everyone else ran, but I was paralyzed while almost reaching for my wand, until I felt someone else grabbing my other hand and pulling me away to run.
We got to the common room, and Ron just started to scream.
"What do they think they're doing! Keeping a thing like that locked up in a school" He said panting.
"You don't use your eyes, do you?" Hermione snapped "Didn't you see what he was standing on?"
"I wasn't looking at his feet, I was a bit preoccupied with his heads" Said Harry.
"Um, I'm with them on this one, Hermione, what was he standing on?" I said.
"Well, (Y/n), he was standing on a trapdoor, it was guarding something" She said, with a bit of a nicer tone to me, but with her hardened eyes still on.
"I hope you're pleased with yourselves. If you two don't mind, I'm going to bed, before either of you" Hermione pointed at them with her free hand " Come up with another clever idea to get us killed, or worse, expelled" Said Hermione, unconsciously, I started to follow her because she still held tight to my hand, and I said.
"Um, Hermione, could you...?" She looked at me, and then at her hand, she looked flustered, and said.
"Um, yeah, right, sorry, good night (Y/n)" She said while climbing the stairs to the girls dormitory, and I went to mine.
I went straight to my bed, said good night to Ron and Harry, who looked to be as tired, if not more tired, than me, and went to sleep.
"Man, if these are the first few days, what more is there to come? I don't know if I should be excited, or scared...."
And sleeping, what usually was a grueling task (at least for me), came as easy as I closed my eyes.
