Ling Xue glanced back at the woman chasing her, a heavy weight settling in her chest. The pain fueled her anger, bringing back memories of being hunted in the cultivation world. She felt utterly helpless and swore to herself that, from now on, she would deal with any annoying pests that crossed her path—no mercy.
Today, she had gotten bitten by an ant.
Ning Shu couldn't help but be grateful for her Taekwondo training and improved stamina. Otherwise, keeping up with the female lead would've felt like running a marathon.
Suddenly, a car blocked Ling Xue's path. Tension gripped her; she wasn't sure if it was friend or foe. Ning Shu, trailing behind, instinctively turned to run back.
Typically, when the female lead faced danger, a powerful ally would swoop in to save her. And with Ling Xue's savior now on the scene, Ning Shu knew she was in deep trouble. There was no way her shooting skills would hold up in a showdown.
As Ning Shu turned around, a man stepped out of the car and aimed his weapon at her. Without thinking, she dropped to the ground, her chin hitting the pavement hard. She scrambled to her feet and bolted away.
Ling Xue eyed the man warily. He returned her gaze with an unsettling intensity, then asked, "Did you get hurt?"
"You saw it, didn't you?" Ling Xue snapped, irritation flaring. "Are you trying to take advantage of this situation? Planning to eliminate me to seize my faction?"
The man chuckled and, without warning, scooped Ling Xue up in a princess carry, tossing her into the car. As he started the engine, he teased, "The queen of the night got taken down by such a little girl."
Ling Xue pressed her hand to her wound, pain coursing through her. "Shut up," she hissed, feeling the sting of his mockery.
Ning Shu watched the car drive away, sighing heavily. She knew she'd have to be on high alert from now on; after this, Ling Xue would likely want to tear her apart.
Just then, a series of rapid honks startled her. She turned to see the school doctor leaning out of the window of the car next to her.
"Get in," he said, and Ning Shu hurriedly climbed in. The school doctor floored the accelerator, and they sped off as if trying to fly.
"Can you slow down a bit?" Ning Shu almost shrieked. Turning around, she noticed the school doctor was once again wearing a black windbreaker. She didn't even know how to comment on it anymore.
"Is that the car?" he asked, glancing at the vehicle they'd just left behind.
Ning Shu raised an eyebrow, surprised. "What?"
"The car Ling Xue got into?" His icy stare made it clear he wasn't in the mood for nonsense.
"Y-yes, that's the one," she stammered, puzzled about why the school doctor needed to chase after them. Was he really going to rescue the female lead? Come on, she had finally managed to draw some blood from Ling Xue!
"Uncle, you're not going to save her, are you?" Ning Shu asked cautiously.
"I need her," he replied.
Ning Shu's face twisted in disbelief. "Then why did you give me a gun?"
The school doctor shot her a confused look. "What's wrong with needing her and giving you a gun?"
Ning Shu fell silent, grappling with the unsettling vibe he gave off. It was as if he was a twisted pervert. He needed Ling Xue but had armed her to shoot the female lead?
Could it be that he wanted to create some kind of dark, twisted love story? Ning Shu shook her head, trying to wrap her mind around how bizarre this situation was. This guy wasn't even part of the original storyline—was he secretly the hidden big boss?
